    This is what a yearling training video should look like. Low expectations, short and sweet sessions, easy and low exercise requirements.

    This is the kind of training I do with my 2 year old. I work with him a few times a week with super short sessions, and he does fine. People really don’t need to drill their young horses every day for an hour.

    He speaks volumes of your training being that calm and together around all those horses and scary things, my mare would of been easily over threshold especially as a young horse x

    Perhaps you already know this but the pink conditioner you used is absolutely magic when diluted into a spray bottle, gives the nicest shine and keeps the coat feeling very natural, doesn’t feel like product on the horse at all. My chestnut looks her best when I use that stuff! It’s awesome!

    Banksy is so beautiful -- so red and that beautiful puzzle piece on his forehead :) I don't think anyone should be arguing with your methods and pace, Shelby; but I'm sure you'll handle them if they do. And, it is not at all boring. Like Milo, I could watch Banksy all day -- he is so expressive. I loved that he would target up in the air at the end -- I see smiles in his future. Thanks for taking us along with you as you work with your horses.

  • @mlaenie4170

    whooaa you mean, introducing new concepts to a young horse doesn't have to involve stressing them out and anthropomorphizing high-anxiety reactions as nothing more than 'baby horse tantrums'?? absolutely wild how that works.
    okay, casting off sarcasm, THIS is the kind of approach i want to see in normalized in horse training. understanding and prioritizing your horse's needs introducing unfamiliar situations a little bit at a time in a non-threatening manner.
    i make it no secret (but i AM ashamed) that i was once fond of natural horsemanship trainers like clinton anderson. my mom told me not to listen to any of his riding advice so we didn't do that, but we had both liked his groundwork. i first started following that way of training when i was around 11 or 12 years old, because i had just been given the responsibility of working with my own horse, but i was too nervous to ride her because she was greenbroke and i was inexperienced and a bit rusty in what i did know, and same with her. so we did groundwork to build my confidence. i was never a devout Follower of The Method™, but i didn't see anything wrong with it. it became very clear by the time i was 15 that actually, this guy had no idea how horses communicate. or how to train a horse.
    sadly the way i came to that realization was through watching an episode of his tv show. this girl had brought a partially or completely blind horse to demonstrate to moneybags that she had pretty much mastered his groundwork fundamentals but that her horse still seemed unsure about 'accepting her as a leader'. they handed the horse off to anderson and about the first thing he did was start asking the horse to back away from him. then he started ripping on the halter and lead rope to get it to back up faster. the heavy duty clip on the halter flipped up and smacked the horse in the face so of course, the horse had a pain reaction and started trying to run away from him. my mom and i also had a reaction, shouting "WHAT THE FUCK" and "SHE. WAS. BACKING. UP." at our tv. i changed the channel after that because we couldn't watch any more, and i've tried to avoid and denounce the duh(mb) method ever since.
    i use mainly positive reinforcement with some aspects of traditional pressure & release/negative reinforcement, and i also kind of use my own experiences in dealing with my anxiety disorder. like i don't want to project my feelings onto the horse because that's not ideal, but i find that if i approach with more of a 'well would i feel more inclined to stay in the corner if someone hit me or forced me to run around every time i tried to leave, or would i feel more inclined to stay there if i got something nice like a cookie every time i walked over there?'' i find it easier to avoid being swept up in emotions like anger and frustration and avoid falling into the trap of labeling horses as 'disrespectful'.

    Great Video! I was wondering how you signal to him to touch the target. With a verbal cue? And does he get fixated on trying to touch it even when you don’t want him to? I don’t know a lot about target training.

    • @Milestone-Equestrian
      @Milestone-Equestrian  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No signal, I conditioned the following of the target by rewarding his interest in the target in smaller intervals and then once he was solid with that, following it. When I don’t want him to engage with the target, I hold the stick target end pointing down to the ground and keep it at my side and that signals no longer to follow it

    This lesson may be for "babies" & very young horses... but I think it can also be applied to anyone who gets a new horse. This should all be done in first week. They just usually had a long journey, a new barn, new people, new hay, new sounds, smells & people and animals to meet. Why blow their minds when they're already dealing with major stress factors.

    I have a question about your technique for helping young horses through stressful/exciting places. If you didn't have another person to hold a calmer older horse for you, would ponying through something like that be as effective? My neighbors horses always get my filly wound up even though she has gotten better about focusing on me. Sometimes she still just grows three feet taller and loses confidence.

    • @Milestone-Equestrian

    I love how you go about training your horses. I remember when bansky was born! I don’t own a horse and I don’t know much about training so I have to ask, when using treats does this mean the horse won’t respond or be willing to even do minor tasks without them? Or will you have to always use them forever? For example, if I were to use treats to teach a horse that when I click, or squeeze my leg, or something they should trot or move forward but if one day I don’t have treats, will they not listen once they realize I don’t have them? Just curious! I love your videos ❤️

    • @Milestone-Equestrian
      @Milestone-Equestrian  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nope once the behaviour is conditioned, it should occur reliably when asked even with a less frequent reinforcement schedule. Think of it as similar as to how once a dog is conditioned to come when their name is called, they don’t need a treat every time to respond to it

I don’t have access to an indoor otherwise I would use that but I also know riding and jumping on bad footing isn’t always safe either. do the hoof boots make a difference too ?
