Hey Daniel and good luck in your job hunting! Since you seem really flexible with your tech stack, how do you prove to potential employers that you are qualified for the job regardless of the previous professional experience with some specific tools and languages? I've been hit multiple times with answers from recruiters like "oh but we look for experienced kotlin engineers": although I've been working with Java for the last 5 years for example. Same area of expertise, pretty much identical tech stack apart from the language specific things and so on. And this has become even more apparent now when I want to steer my career towards iOS Development. Okay sure, quite of a different paradigm from the usual backend stuff, but at the end of the day, it's still an engineering job, you still work with data flows, networking, concurrency & other stuff. And I still carry over my backend expertise which would further help the teams, no? So what would your approach be and how would you convince recruiters that your engineering skills can fulfill and tackle any challenge thrown at you? Should I shove some portfolio down their throats even though they never ask for it because "you lack professional experience with the technology"? P.S: Thanks to your recent macbook setup video I configured my new M4 Max machine and it's been a great UX with those changes.
“Well, you really touched a nerve with that! First of all, recruiters are just recruiters, and even in 2024, there are still those who think Java and JavaScript are the same thing. This alone says a lot about how companies approach hiring developers. Some HR professionals are tech-savvy and can speak the language of developers quite well, but others are completely out of touch. Second, your CV will likely be scanned by AIs or some kind of ‘I-have-no-clue’ machines. This means it’s in your best interest to pack your resume with keywords and long-winded paragraphs filled with jargon. You’re basically trying to signal, “Hey, I’m the one!” Only then, by some stroke of luck, you might catch the attention of an actual human being who could potentially call you. And even then, you’re hoping they give you a chance to explain what you can actually do in the real world. (Yes, I’m exaggerating-kind of.) Third, let’s be real: recruiters don’t care about you as a person, your soft skills, or your personality-yada yada yada. Their focus is entirely on checking boxes and matching you to their predefined list of qualifications. So, to answer your question: I REALLY DON’T KNOW, MAN! I’ve been working with Angular for six or seven years now, but guess what? I’m not considered interesting in the job market anymore because everyone seems to have shifted to Vue.js. Same story for another kind of Tool everyone use and I didn't get the chance of mastering it because probably in my last company they didn't use kafka or some other sh*t. What’s wrong with this picture? And tomorrow, it’ll be some super-duper-awesome.js framework that takes over, leaving you high and dry because you ‘wasted’ time and effort mastering a different tech stack. The market is becoming a mess, filled with hype and trends that make it impossible for developers to showcase their true value. And unfortunately, there’s not much we can do to change that.”
