- We would like to wish Ian 'Beefy' Botham a very happy birthday as he celebrates his 60th Birthday today (24/11/2015).
Botham is regarded as one of the best all-rounders to ever grace the game of cricket and is the finest England have ever produced.

Stokes is good, Flintoff was good, Ian Botham lifted English cricket from a slow paced well mannered occasion into fast paced rock and roll rebellion and British sport has been one hell of a vast improvement for it. I doubt any English cricketer will do for the game what this man did.
In terms of match-winning all rounders the best of all time. Sobers and Kallis managed a century and 5 wckt innings in one game in their careers. Botham did it three times.
Ian Botham was a great all rounder. But Ben Stokes is also a great all rounder. In that era Kapil Dev and Imran Khan were other great all rounders.
@@krishnendubasu5936 let's also add Sir Richard Handled around that time too. A fabulous cricketer. I feel Ben Stokes has a huge task on his hands. He has inherited a very poor set of players and if Anderson and Broad retire they have no durable fast bowlers at all.

Every now and again i watch this sometimes after a few years have gone by and it brings it all back, i drift back in time to those days like I’m in a time machine
Botham up until around 1985/86 was the ultimate all-rounder. A genuine and consistent match winner with both bat and ball, whereas other all-rounders tend to be great at one and merely proficient at the other.
But Ian Botham was a swing bowler and rarely took the new ball. He used to bowl first change. Imran Khan was a genuine fast bowler and he always took the new ball. So did Kapil Dev.

If you were right, where would that put Sobers the spinner/swinger or Jacques Kallis the first or even second changer - the two greatest allrounders of all time?
@@danguee1 I rate all of them very highly. Ian Botham was a great all rounder for sure. The point is that, purely as a bowler, Imran Khan and Kapil Dev were more potent strike bowlers as they took the new ball throughout their careers and remained match winning bowlers for longer duration then the other all rounders that you have mentioned. By the end of their careers, Ian Botham and Jacques Kallis were no longer match winning bowlers whereas Imran Khan and Kapil Dev were still strike bowlers for their countries, taking the new ball all the time.

I remember this day like it was yesterday a swelteringly hot Sunday. I was a cricket mad 12 year old and was gutted because after the win at Headingly it felt like we had handed it all back to Australia. Then the great man came on changed everything. It was like a tornado had come to Birmingham and simply blew Australia away. It was incredible he was incredible.
I’m exactly the same. 13 year old playing football in the garden with my cousins on a beautiful hot Sunday. Dad comes home from his trip to the pub telling me we’ve won. I was so shocked and happy at the same time. I went to the last day of the series at the Oval. I still have my ticket, entrance fee £1 to see Alec Bedser give Botham his man of the series award.
I was eleven and at the end of junior school back then. Beefy was my hero during my formative years. So I am younger than both of you!
I took the day off sick from work to watch this.
Such an exciting cricket on his day. Simply the best, he lifted the game to new heights .

Botham was indeed truly great...at times. When he wasn't great, he was pretty bad. His inconsistency, poor fitness and excess weight are not the hallmarks of an elite athlete/world class cricketer. While Kallis was not as headline catching and game changing as Botham, his clinical efficiency, mental toughness, reliable consistency and extraordinary test batting average put him very much in a league of his own.
@@hyena131 you're talking about cricket from different eras....from 78-86 Beefy was miles ahead of anyone else (and the game was blessed with high quality all-rounders, Imran, kapil Dev, Hadlee et al)....Jack Kallis was a great batsman, a bit one paced perhaps, and a useful support bowler....Beefy was devastating with bat and ball, quite often in the same match, so for me having grown up on cricket since the 70's, there is no comparison, but naturally I respect your comments :)
in closing the hall mark of a genuine all-rounder is the ability to be worthy of a place as either a batsman or bowler....For Kallis, yes to the former, no to the latter.....for Botham (78-86) yes in both categories......Botham though from 87-92 was a shadow of his former self due to injury & fitness

Very Clever cricketer.
Rodney Hogg who was stood at the non strikers end said that Botham was bowling fast and reverse swinging that old ball. Botham said he didn’t know what reverse swing was and it was just happening for him. Has to be his greatest ever spell of bowling. Absolutely brilliant. What a cricketer he was. Read an all time England cricket list the other day and Botham was at number 6! Bullshit…..people have short memories or either do not know their history. Only one English cricketer stands above Botham and that is WG Grace after the great man it is Botham.

There is Cricket and then there is cricket with Ian Botham.
Cricket on TV was great in those days. Whole days play on BBC 2 , simple camera work and easy commentary. No gimmicks. Or if you preferred the TV with the volume down and test match special on the Radio.

Cricket was different then. We, in India, have so many religious festivals, but cricket was the unique one that cut across all barriers. In Calcutta, which was the erstwhile capital of British India, test matches were traditionally held during the winter holidays, between Christmas and the New Year. I can still feel the cosy aroma of tangerines and oranges and the gentle nip of winter in the huge Eden Gardens stadium, as we watched those wonderful cricket dramas unfold before our eyes for five days. 20/20 and all other abridged formats have corrupted the spirit of this leisurely sport. Some things in life should be left alone.
What set Ian Botham apart, was that he was the biggest match turner you will ever see.
Others may have better stats, but they didn't have his temperament and iron will to take matches away from you.
An amazing workhorse bowler, a very technically gifted batsman, and the safest pair of hands of his day (And arguably ever).
Viv Richards said that he was amongst the greatest players he ever saw, and that the Windies would develop entire team plans, to stop him.

Same. I moved into my grandparents age 11, having been taken from a violent home. I used to sit with my grandad watching cricket. He'd tell me about the players of the past. I grew to love the game. I miss that man, he literally saved my life.

My mate was at Edgbaston that day and the atmosphere was like nothing he had ever heard at a cricket match - electrifying.

Terrestrial TV stopped showing test match cricket in England. Thus depriving generations of secondary school kids the chance to watch. All money orientated of course. Test cricket and red ball cricket will just die in England. Recreational cricket? Seems to be played predominantly by Asians in the UK now.

I was in Green Park in London thst day, I heard on a someone's transistor radio " Bothams got his wicket." I sat down near the radio owner and was enthralled while it all took place and got into a convo with the guy. He mistook this Kiwi for an Australian. I took grat delight incorrecting him.

Botham was a great all-rounder but I've always thought this spell was overrated. Mostly tailenders and mostly out to atrocious shots. I think after Headingly the Australians were in his spell, and justifiably so.

Considering the teams he played with, the best all-rounder ever! His bowling, batting and fielding was breathtaking. He made the game exciting. The only Englishman who would get in my all-time 11.

Botham was awesome at the end of this series, but to be honest the Aussie batting line up in this series wasn't great. Some of the shots were poor , something about Botham he took more wickets off poor balls than anyone. On the other hand ......maybe that's genius at work.

I remember this been at my grandparents in Clacton and my dad allowed me to stay a extra few days and he went home with my mum and brother. I remember as they were walking out the door saying to my dad England I was going to win and his response was lightning doesn't strike twice after the Headingley test. A couple of days later when he called my grandparents I reminded him what you he said after another great performance by Botham

I remember this on a hot sunny Sunday afternoon, back in 81. It was just an amazing series.Really Australia were a better side, bu I. T .Botham won it practically single handedly. People forget ,it wasn't just the sintalating runs ,or amazing wickets. His slip catching was amazing, that also help best the Aussies

I feel the Headingley match turned on Graham Dilleys innings. From nowhere came someone hitting the Aussies very hard. Botham joined in the fun and the rest is history. And what a catch to get rid of Rodney Marsh. RIP Graham Dilley.

Agreed, but the camera angles and general quality of watching cricket live has increased remarkably compared with now and then. This costs money and I can't help feeling that all the various cricket boards fund this with the advertising revenue you speak of. And no doubt (from player's salaries amongst other expenses) it also keeps cricket alive and healthy. Same as T20. I don't particularly like the form of the game, but it puts cricket on the map, generates a lot of money and gets younger people into cricket who otherwise wouldn't be interested.

People like to mock Geoff Boycott's defencive styke but his 46 off 141 balls slowed the rate of wickets, would you want him in a ODI or 20:20 but in proper cricket you need someone who can just stay at the crease at times.
The Botham era was arguably the greatest in English cricketing history. The team was not the best but Beefy made up for it and a whole lot more.
