Thank you for this video. This essay was assigned to my English class for analysis and hearing someone else read it really really helped me. It always sounds better with an English accent.
In Moulmein 0:07 All this was perplexing 1:13 One day something happened 2:51 The Burmese 4:28 Some more women followed 5:34 The orderly came back 6:56 I had halted on the road 8:26 But at that moment 9:13 But I did not want to shoot the elephant 11:26 It was perfectly clear to me 12:16 There was only one alternative 13:23 When I pulled the trigger 14:04 I got up 15:38 In the end 16:55 Afterwards, of course 17:10
Orwell shot the Elephant because he did not want to 'lose face' while the Native's were watching. That is what the whole part about not wanting to be "laughed" at was all about. Orwell as a colonial officer has to live up to the role not only of what the British colonialist's expect of him, but also of the oppressed Natives in Burma.
I worked as a uniform security guard in Central Phoenix Arizona and the venom spat at me combined with the evil stares and snide comments was enough to make me question my pursuit of a job in law enforcement. Nothing paints a target on a man's back like a badge and uniform and no one is more hated, even if he is more of a problem solver, than the man who tries to balance the scales of justice on a street level.
Thank you very much for the kind words. I would consider reading 1984 and Burmese Day's the only difficulty is I am very busy with my studies. I am currently undertaking a Master's Degree in English Literature and I spend most of my time studying. I may consider doing a section of one of the books, I thought about the torture scene in 1984. Thanks again for the kind words :)
I enjoy his essays and personal experiences much more than his books. He was a very interesting man, but his world-view was akin to some of the most depressing forecasts for the peak oil crisis. Fortunately, the worst of the catastrophizing, for that is what it was, he thought about and wrote of, has not come to pass. However, to say the least he was looking farther into the future, and into the consequence of human action (both as a moral judgment and otherwise) than most men of his era.
Very well read. I hadn't even thought of this since I last read it about 40 years ago though I do remember that It made quite an impression on me then. It has made a very different, more profound, impression on me now that I have experienced so much more of the world and people. Thank you very much.
I am glad I can be of service :). If you need any help in analyzing the text do not hesitate to ask questions. You should also listen too another essay I have uploaded called "A Hanging", which can be read in conjunction with "Shooting an Elephant". .
@PurpleGhost Did you not enjoy 'Animal Farm' or '1984'? Orwell's writing is better suited to the essay (I agree), you always feel the essayist wanting to burst through the page in his novels. But Orwell essentially got the three questions of his century right: Imperialism, Fascism and Stalinist Communism were all evil things and he was never afraid to say so.
Thanks for this upload. I was supposed to read this essay for class, but I already have read it and I'm too lazy to read it again and just wanted a refresh on the story.
i need help with my homework.. What decision did Orwell make about the elephant and why? To what extent was he correct in his decision? In what ways does the outsider theme connect here? Support your answer with at least one short quote from the text. please anyone help me?? thank you!
Great Reading! I am studying this for my 'a' levels also for coursework, i wondered if anyone knew of a website or had some information on how it could be interpreted for a marxist reading. I understand the basics, but a lot more information would be a great help.
What was the name of the short story that George Orwell wrote, where the people had to wear weights and shackles all the time? For the life of me I can’t remember.
+princess adeoye It wasn't an official essay, but more of a short autobiography of his time as a police officer in india. I like how orwell did this sort of thing, he wrote several of these over the course of his life, so we can actually see his changes in views and why he changed them.
Why did orwell shoot the elephant...is there more than one elephant he's talking about? like symbolically or just the scene of shooting one actual elephant great essay btw and great job reading man
hay thanks for this when i first saw the five pages of this that i was given for my English assignment my English assignment i was groaned but it wasn't so bad after all really helpful
@29harveydinio - It is a fact that I found both to be nearly insuffereable. I enjoyed the story of '1984' (as much as one can, such a bleak potential world), but his writing style was, first very descriptive, then suddenly bare bones narrative; irritating. - I hesitate to say it, but it's a truth that I found his writing in animal farm, to be childish and tempermental. It's like he kept getting bored with writing it, and rushing through segments of time sloppily. --- I agree, he knew his 'isms'.
AlmostLeroy Oh, I see now. When a man takes and volunteers his time to do a generous act, make a side remark about how his work isn't up to the high standards of the person listening to it for free, like a bitch. Interesting lesson, that. Think I'll pass.
AlmostLeroy Okay. Let's hear a reading of yours. If you can do it better and more interesting, go for it. Otherwise, you're really just being a jerk toward someone who _did_ take the time and make the effort.

Absolutely arresting reading. Thanks for it.
reminds of me of what it's like for corrections officers in the USA today
@pinkmoon831 My voice is calming? 0_o lol.
I am glad you enjoyed it.
Actually, your speed is perfect. I have an auditory processing disorder that makes listening to people speaking (quickly) difficult.
Excellent reading. Fine job. Enjoyed it entirely!
Your voice calms my senses...Thnxs for that really good reading ;)
Thanks for this upload. I was supposed to read this essay for class, but I already have read it and I'm too lazy to read it again and just wanted a refresh on the story.
Just few hours ago I submitted an essay on "Shooting an Elephant" for a fiction class.
Killer essay, just full of penetrating realism, and I liked the reader, too.
Great Reading, bringing Orwell to life

Thank you, this helped with my homework
I don’t really understand what’s going on in the beginning up until they get to the dead man part. Can someone explain? Thanks!
the ending is so clever
The elephant kills the Indian. Orwell kills the elephant. The elephant kills Orwell's colonial life.
what is the thesis?
+princess adeoye It wasn't an official essay, but more of a short autobiography of his time as a police officer in india.

Great essay, but the reader is crazy boring.
AlmostLeroy Why don't you take your negativity and _get lost_?!
Donald Miller Why don't you take a critique and _learn_?
AlmostLeroy Oh, I see now. When a man takes and volunteers his time to do a generous act, make a side remark about how his work isn't up to the high standards of the person listening to it for free, like a bitch. Interesting lesson, that. Think I'll pass.
