Rat Slayer, while I have no clue who had the first 3D move. I know that Cavaliers 1995 had a spinning sphere for the Planets show. I’m sure there are many others as well.

Absolutely. The theatrics are fun and sometimes a more direct way to compliment the music or express the theme, but the drill cannot get lost in all that sauce.. Drill is a core element of the form. It’s what sets DCI/Marching band apart from concert band, or any other ensembles. So the drill should be a constant and present, element throughout most of the show with theatrics, and props, and even gimmicks woven in on top of a top-notch drill design.
Arguably one of the best Cavaliers shows of all time. In my opinion, their 2002 show is better, as it is tied 2nd all time for highest overall score. It also has ridiculously great drill and music. Making it one of my favorites!

I used to do Drum Corps in the UK in the 80's and 90's, it was no where near this level but was a great activity to grow up in, I have life long friends from this activity. We watched the DCI videos as we were growing up and the likes of Blue Devils, Santa Clara Vanguard, Cavaliers, Cadets, Bluecoats, Velvet Knights, Freelancers, Star Of Indiana, Spirit Of Atlanta, Crossmen, Phantom Regiment and many many more were our heroes...... I went to watch DCI in 1990, 1992, 1996 and 2011..... I hope to visit again, maybe even this year. A lot has changed over the years, for me the 80's and 90's are my favourite decades of DCI, not taking anything away from the current stuff because it's still amazing. If I was going to try and explain to someone who'd never seen Drum Corps what Drum Corps was, Cavaliers 2004 would be one of the shows I'd show them....... I think they couldn't fail to be impressed by it. great vids, it's great to see someone react to this fantastic activity in the way you do. Please try and watch....... and this is definitely an 80's and 90's vibe!..... Blue Devils 1988, 1989, 1994, Cadets 1989, 1990, 1992, Velvet Knights 1989, Santa Clara Vanguard 1989, 1990, 1992, and if you like crazy drill! Star Of Indiana 1990, 1991, 1992.......... these are just a few of my faves..... check them out. Keep the vids coming.... they're great.
As a Cavalier FFM in the 2 valve bugle days I love hearing the lead trumpet section, you know especially without the synth overlay that’s constant these days. Really get a more sense of the ability of the players on the field. Love seeing reaction from people not familiar with the activity. Thanks Courtney.
Great to see you react to these corps shows. The 2004 Cavaliers is a classic example of a show more driven by amazing visual drill moves, guard integration, and some fantastic music in brass and percussion. Some of the shows you are seeing in the current era of DCI (2010-2019) are a bit more Broadway like in terms of props, staging, acting, story, body movement, etc. And those shows are fantastic. But that Cavaliers show is a good example of the best from the first decade of the 2000s. If you are interested in some 1990s drum corps, or even 1980s drum corps, just to get an idea of how the activity has grown and what some of the traditions are then I would suggest checking out Madison Scouts 1995, 97, or 99. They were certainly one of the more entertaining units from the 80s and 90s. Also maybe check out Star of Indiana 1991 or 93 (very abstract, modern, contemporary) and The Cadets 92 or 95. From the 1980s I would suggest Garfield Cadets 1984 or Santa Clara Vanguard 1988 or 89 (Phantom of the Opera). The SCV shows from 86-89 began to do more with story, props, staging, and while not to the level we see today you will get an idea of where the activity came from. If you want to hear a near perfect brass line with perfect soloists and just straight up great music and marching (even if it is considered a bit old school today) listen to Blue Devils 1982 or 86. I am glad you have had a chance to listen and view the 2010s because the activity has come a long way and it is more Broadway like these days. Of course, video really does not do these shows justice and you have to see these live. Hopefully in 2021 we can get you to attend DCI Championships in Indianapolis, IN. Whatever you choose to watch is totally up to you. Just enjoy it, and thanks for posting some of your thoughts. :)
Out of all the early 2000's Cavaliers show, I'm partial to the one that didn't win, 2003's Spin Cycle. It's my favorite non-participant (I marched way back, 1983-1985) Cavalier show.
the "007" move was indeed genius, or at least more thoroughly thought out than when you see a college marching band do those kinds of gimmick moves. In this case you absolutely did not see it coming until just a few counts before the set resolved. That's called effect, kids.
Btw, the running an playing part, yeah it's not easy to do at first. It's all about isolating your upper body from the lower. I.e. keeping it from moving while jazz running the bottom half. Oh also, cavaliers never look at other players while they move. They do something called dot marching, so they know hey I need to be 2 steps inside the 35, 11.5 steps in front of the front hash side 2. And they go straight there. So it's about memorizing all 200-250 dots per show, all the music, isolating your upper body to be able to play at the same time, etc... Yeah so much work and so much muscle memory.
To be fair a lot of "form marching" also memorize dots -- well, at least in my experience. I wish I'd marched dot though, less "go to your dot but ultimately guide to form" which just creates issues.
@@kevinbs05 Lucky you. Lol... I marched form but was rebellious during rehearsal at times trying to force the form to get to our dots when I got frustrated that we never made it. Ugh. I'm a "dot marcher" at heart, a "form marcher" in protest hahaha
Welcome to mid 2000's Michael Gaines drill Courtney. The man is an absolute animal. The athleticism of the mid 2000's Cavaliers teams played right into his capable hands. Glad you enjoyed it.
THIS is the kind of show that I fell in love with from the drum corps. No props needed, just great musicianship, great imagination in movement/transitions/shapes. The Cavs aren't my fave, but I've always had massive respect for em. My roots go back to Wisconsin...the Scouts are where my heart's at. Great show here without a doubt, though.
Your reaction to the 007 drill was perfect. I marched Cavaliers over 30 years ago, and this is one of my very favorite shows. And that is one of my favorite moments in all of drum corps.
Lots of practice, hard work, and determination. Anyone can do anything. Michael Gaines was the drill writer for my senior year high school marching band and I gotta say his drill design is fire!!!! 🔥🔥🔥
Probably your best reaction video to date! I love how you gasp with anticipation and excitement. Happy you have seen how amazing some of these drum corps performances are. College bands along with drum corps in general have immense followings from the student body. Especially during football and basketball seasons!
Thank you, Courtney! Glad you enjoyed the show. Your reaction at 7:00 was awesome, that was my good buddy Mike McHugh and I setting the stage for ‘Cuba’ on the high trumpet shakes! What a show!
Thank you Courtney! Finally, someone who gets the hard work that's involved in creating a show. That year was my age out year and I will never forget my family at SCV or with FEVER having such an EPIC season. Thank you all who bring such joy to spectators such as Courtney. Courtney, you gotta see in person what it's all about. You'll be blown away by all the talent from around the world.
Fun fact, as they move around, typically the section/instrument section that has the melody or is to be featured in that moment, will be moving to the front adn when their times has passed, they'll move on. So part of the marching is not only to be visually appealing but as you can hear, the music changes instruments and who is playing, so it's constantly moving to move the music being played closer to the audience. A GREAT example of this, is when the drums come close, they're featured, and when they move away they fade into the background.
Moving that fast and playing requires you to flex you core so that you can separate your lower and upper body, that way you can control the mouthpiece on your mouth and your legs. Do it for a whole summer, a lot of people get incredible abs from it
Every single corp in DCI is literally its own hive mind. You just have to be that way in order to make a show like that come together! It is THE pinnacle of teamwork in my opinion. Seeing the result of a hundred and fifty or more highly talented musicians all working at such a high level every day to be their best together just makes me proud to be a human being.
As a FMM of the Cavaliers, I thank you for watching these videos. IMHO, if you want real crazy drill, I'm partial to 2003's Spin Cycle. Check it out if you get a chance!!
007 and the mid-2000s Cavaliers were clearly made for each other. The guard often did a Bond show for WGI and to see it expanded to the full field corps did not disappoint.
Sad that the DCI season this year is cancelled (i believe). Also, these kids (i believe 16-20 or 21) have to audition to get in these corps, and also pay a substantial amount to be in it as well.
daniel coffin and Andrew it is 14-21 for world class corps with a bonus year for people born after June 1st. However, anything younger than 16 years old is extremely uncommon to see in the top 12.
@@davidgriffin6658 They should really let age outs of 2020 march in 2021 as a special privilege. Would really suck for rook outs making their dream corps this year and not being able to march in 2021.
I was actually at this show and had seats right next to the camera used for the "overhead" shots (the shots where you can see the whole show on the field). Couldn't have had better seats and The Cavaliers nailed their performance!
I’m glad the Denver altitude didn’t seem to affect the shows all that much that year. Such a great year with many awesome shows, including arguably Phantom’s most underrated show.
I was in Drum Corps from 76-82. I marched in four corps and I am a Montreal Finalist. This in my opinion the best Drum Corps show ever. I am of course biased, as I am huge James Bond fan, and this finals was played in my home town.
As a band member you're placed on a yard line and a hash mark on that yard line and where you're supposed to stand in reference to it. Then you know how many beats/measures you have until the next place you're supposed to be. Based on the design being depicted that often means waiting until the last second and then hightailing it, although sometimes its a subtle shift
The guy who wrote that drill also wrote the drill you saw in the Santa Clara Vanguard “Babylon” (2018) show you watched. He’s a legendary drill writer! His name is Michael Gaines. It’s cool to see your exposure to this activity!!!
The people who have been involved with DCI and marching really like watching your videos. I implore you to one day GO to one of these competitions/performances. You think you’re blown away by a TH-cam video. Wait until you see it LIVE. The intensity and volume will leave you a change person.
2002 and 2006 Cavaliers had amazing drills and imho better than 2004. If interested, the 2002 show is called "Frameworks" and the 2006 show is "Machine".
@@marianaboulton6615 Glad to hear I'm not the only one. People hype up Machine so much and I can somewhat understand that it's because of the drill. But it lacks too much musically for me. An entertaining show is good visually and musically. You can't win me over with just one.
If you liked this for the drill (the movements on the field) you should look up the 2006 Cavaliers show "Machine". As a high school marching band member in 2006 I lost my mind when I saw that show live, it is so impressive what Michael Gaines can do with his drill
I love the Bond films. When my Dad showed em to me in middle school, I was immediately obsessed. I had the entire collection on VHS. My favorite Bond was Roger Moore. His played more calculated, always had a plan, was more smooth. As for the films...The Spy Who Loved Me (the submarines 😎), Moonraker, For Your Eyes Only, A View To A Kill, and Goldeneye were the ones I watched the most. I watched the entire collection but those were the ones I’d watch the most. They were my favorite.
If you really want to see what it’s like to perform one of these shows, I HIGHLY recommend “Bluecoats 2016 Trumpet Soloist Supercam - Ben Gunnarson.” It’s GoPro video that switches between the week before finals competition to their victory run after they won the championship.
I was at this show and bought my tickets through the Cavies. I was not sure who to watch - the guys or their parents! What great parents who loved their boys and what a fun night! 007 move was amazing!
Benjamin Li yeah same I remember my band te her is high school showed me blue devils metamorph first and I though it was sick then about a year later I was thinking about it and I searched it up and found the Santa Clara performance and absolutely loved it and now I have gotten into it and have been watching old and new performances and I love it
How do they do it? Very simple, a ton of practice and dedication. Glad you are enjoying the DCI shows. Check out Santa Clara Vanguard 2018. Michael Gaines also wrote their drill.

Your videos are so enjoyable to watch, especially these ones🥰 I’m in high school marching band and I love going to watch drum core in person. If you are ever in America you should definitely watch one! Well that is if it is dci season ofc!
DCI was our sport in marching band. And, the whole marching, playing, and keeping formation; why do you think we got our Phys Ed credit after one semester? It's a little harder than dodgeball.
This show is amazing but I hope others have already suggested Blue Devils from 2004 “Summer Train Blues Mix”. I think you would be so surprised and amazed. A very unique and incredible performance. Please react!!
I marched in the early 2000's, so I'm super biased towards this style. I was told by one of the 2000 Cavies drum majors that a big part of the reason they were so smooth in their marching was they laid out about twice as many forms as the rest of us did at that time, so they had much shorter transitions. Obviously they were also just damn amazing at it.
Watch some "Velvet Knights' from the late 80's, Early 90's, they were known as the 'Clown Princes' of the activity, super entertaining. 1988, 1989, 1990, 1992 are particular favourites of mine 👍
One of my personal favorite DCI shows I think you should react to is Bluecoats 2005 "Caravan". That's up there with one of the last great DCI shows before all the bells and whistles to me. Also, 1995 Madison Scouts "A Drum Corps Fan's Dream" is up there with the epitome of an entertaining show about the visuals and music. My biggest request would be Star of Indiana 1991 "Roman Images", with solid horns and drums with the drill written by the innovator of innovators George Zingali
The Cavaliers are an all male drum corps if you didn't notice. They were originally a boy scout group. I think the Madison scouts are the only other all male boy scout group drum corps. The Cavaliers were drill masters, the show Machine was epic too. They used to have entertaining shows, I'm not sure what happened to the Cavaliers, when I was in high school all I heard about were the Cavaliers and Blue Devil's.
Honestly, I'm kinda bummed someone picked 2004 for your first reaction to Cavies. When it comes to early 2000's, they were on fire. But 2002 Frameworks, 2006 Machine (would have been my choice), 2001 Four Corners, 2003 Spin Cycle or even 2000 Niagara Falls would have been better introductions.
This (or Machine) are good choices for a first show to watch from The Cavaliers because of how accessible the themes are. Spin Cycle and Frameworks are pretty esoteric (as much as I love them). It'd be cool to see her react to something even further back like the 1995 Planets show :)
@@MS-df2fk Courtney likes big endings. The Planets was a good show (HORRIBLE RECORDING), but 1992 might be better for a beginner? Gvorkna ... great drill... killer ending.
Hi Courtney, check out the space jump on TH-cam. The guy ascended to an extremely high altitude in a special balloon, high enough to see the curvature of the very Earth then with a special space suit jumps back to Earth.
Hearing you say you are a James Bond fan made my respect level for you raise by about 10,000%. I am a HUGE James Bond fan, both the movies and the soundtrack albums. The Bond movies have had some of the best movie music ever recorded. I have all the movies on DVD and all the soundtracks downloaded (as well as LPs and CDs). I was challenging myself to figure out which movies the music they were playing in this performance were from. I'm kinda sad knowing the next movie is gonna be the last to feature the Bond character, with the new female 007 being introduced and taking over the job from Bond...James Bond (sorry, couldn't resist). I wonder if she also likes her martinis shaken, not stirred!
As someone who marched Cavaliers, seeing these kind of reactions from people outside the community are absolutely amazing
Cavs have some brilliant shows. I marched 1979 Spirit. Respect !!!!

Thanks Courtney.
i think it would be interesting if you were to watch rehearsal footage, and get a bit of insight into how these shows come together
You like clean drill, cool moves, and interesting drill transitions???...
2000s Cavaliers is the corps for you.
Out of all the early 2000's Cavaliers show, I'm partial to the one that didn't win, 2003's Spin Cycle. It's my favorite non-participant (I marched way back, 1983-1985) Cavalier show.
@@elbear98 I feel that show should have won.
Loving the drum corps videos!!!!!!!
My brother in law and his twin brother were in the Cavaliers. My brother in law on drums, his brother on horn.
the "007" move was indeed genius, or at least more thoroughly thought out than when you see a college marching band do those kinds of gimmick moves.
@@Vault800 Yeah I'm 3 for 3 corps that all dot marched. Never experienced form marching outside of marching band.
Great show here without a doubt, though.
yes, when drumcorps still was "peeling your face off"... th-cam.com/video/AQH2030K8eY/w-d-xo.html
I define the Cavaliers as the masters of Drill.
^Frameworks. Nuff said lol
Do it for a whole summer, a lot of people get incredible abs from it
ahhh that makes sense! Must be incredibly difficult to master
SPLOOIEEEEEEEE!! I’m so happy you watched this
YES!!!! THE CAVALIERS!!!!!
You should react to WGI if you can! WGI is a whole other world! I recommend Mechanicsburg 2014 or Pride of Cincinnati 2019
Pride of Cincinnati Summer of Love too....
OMG THANK YOU FOR THIS COMMENT!!
I've been waiting for a Guardie to show up anywhere in the comments
2018 SCV
yes
Yes yes
‘89 SCV!
She did already!
Easily my fav DCI show of all time. The book that year was JAMMIN!
@@Themustangturtledude they've already decided to let age outs perform next year, so it's all good!
Stephanie knows what shes talking about 👏👏👏
Please react to Santa Clara Vanguard 2018. The narrative the show writes and the music are amazing. Easily my top 10
I was actually at this show and had seats right next to the camera used for the "overhead" shots (the shots where you can see the whole show on the field). Couldn't have had better seats and The Cavaliers nailed their performance!
Keep doing the DCI content!! My recommendation to watch would be 2013 Carolina Crown e=mc2. Probably the greatest brass section in the history of DCI!
Brave New World 2011 Bluecoats is also an absolute amazing show. The opener gives me chills every time I hear it.
Cavalier's drill is always just stunning. Powerful bombastic drumline, and fast stunningly crisp drill.
Thank you, Courtney. Cavaliers alumnus here...
Thanks for watching the Cavaliers! We truly are happy that you got such great reactions from the show! SPLOOIE!
2006 had nothing on this show musically. IMO.
Yes we need to make her watch 2006 Cavaliers. It’s visually satisfying but the music isn’t all that.
2000 Cadets! Multicam. Awesome drill sets, push-pull amoeba / geometric clean spacing/intervals. Show & tell!
my band director marched in this show and it’s so awesome to talk to him about it hahah
If you really want to see what it’s like to perform one of these shows, I HIGHLY recommend “Bluecoats 2016 Trumpet Soloist Supercam - Ben Gunnarson.” It’s GoPro video that switches between the week before finals competition to their victory run after they won the championship.
Girlie Gets SSSSSO Excited. She's FUN to Watch Enjoying DCI's Version of Entertainment. GOOD Job w/Your 'Commentary'!!!!
This is when cavis were cavis! This was my first DCI show I went too. And I never forgot this
2006 cavaliers drum corps MACHINE
Watch Star of Indiana 91 and 93 to see how the dancing aspect of drum corps got started
Have got...GOT...to get some 2002 Cavilers in there. Where is there a high quality version of Frameworks?
When they had finals I'm my hometown Denver, Colorado. Love it!!!
I was at this show and bought my tickets through the Cavies. I was not sure who to watch - the guys or their parents! What great parents who loved their boys and what a fun night! 007 move was amazing!
2018 Scv!?
Absolutely
yes and yes
Kenneth Schechter and Benjamin Li I swear that performance is a performance that can and will get you hooked on dci I swear 😂
@@wNoxus it did- it was one of the first shows I watched back when I was just starting high school marching band and it hooked me on dci immediately

Not yet I want to!!! 2022!!
I was sitting in the crowd on Finals night. Huge stadium.
Your videos are so enjoyable to watch, especially these ones🥰 I’m in high school marching band and I love going to watch drum core in person. If you are ever in America you should definitely watch one! Well that is if it is dci season ofc!
thank you so much!! yesss I want to go in person for sure!!
good memories, i was at this show.
the cadets 2011 is a cool show to watch mostly visually
DCI was our sport in marching band. And, the whole marching, playing, and keeping formation; why do you think we got our Phys Ed credit after one semester? It's a little harder than dodgeball.
I remember seeing this show live, what a powerhouse of a corps they where in the 2000’s
That they were, I was at this performance, saw it from the second deck and they were so CLEAN.
This show is amazing but I hope others have already suggested Blue Devils from 2004 “Summer Train Blues Mix”. I think you would be so surprised and amazed. A very unique and incredible performance. Please react!!
2005 the Cadets 'The Zone'! When I saw this in high school I had to join the marching band lol
if you want some awesome movement show, i prefer you
Cadet 2011 : Between Angel and Demon
Agree.
Definitely
100% wont regret it..
Her reaction to the "007"
Old school cavaliers drill.. 2000 ta 2004 was a clinic on how to do drill
You should watch 2006 Cavaloers Machine, Cavaliers 2002 Frameworks, and 1989 Santa Clara Vanguard Phantom of the Opera. Simply, amazing shows!
I also love Cavaliers 1995 The Planets lol.
When this chaos is done, you should come to US and watch DCI in person! It's incredible!!!
We need to get her the 2006 show. That show was AMAZING!
Sadly Scouts announced last year they were going co-ed for 2020 season, so Cavs are the only all-male corps left.
The important part is that she liked it, and that's the most important thing with first impressions from different corps
And at least there's video of Felix's jump compared to Eaustace's later one.
Watch the Santa Clara Vanguard 2004 show: Scheherazade
Please please please react to Santa Clara vanguard 2018
