The n505 was my first md portable, saved up gift money for a year to afford one. Led to a longterm hobby of collecting and repairing these units. Great/informative/well explained video. Happy to see yours is now behaving (hopefully for good)!
Thanks very much. And thanks for giving me the definitive solution.
Thanks a lot! I was able to fix one N505 with this button problem!
Excellent!
You can always use new kapton tape pieces to get those buttons centred more accurately and get rid of that original tape layer...done this in mice, xbox controllers and so on...many times. Can even swap for xbox clickers as i call them...more click than these old ones.
Secondly you need to repair the screw posts else the board wont position perfectly..use old modelling kits, airfix sprue...and glue...can then be re drilled a few mil smaller and the screws will self tap
Thanks for the tips!
Where could one buy these clickers? I have a faulty dome cap in my unit and need to replace it.
Great video on these minidisc players. In fact oxidisation affects a lot of things in older electronics. I have a Commodore Plus/4 computer from the 80's which has problems with certain keyboard buttons. I will have to bite the bullet and clean it someday I guess.
Thanks. I don't know the mechanics of a Plus/4 keyboard. I think The 8-bit Guy or Adrian's Digital Basement might have done redurbs of commodore computers. I have a couple of Beebs (BBC Model B) in a cupboard but no space to use them.
@@CBitsTech That's interesting you mention your BBC's as I have a model B as well. I haven't powered it up as it needs a rifa capacitor changed beforehand. I had an amp once that blew it's rifa and it was totally stinky! th-cam.com/video/E_kxvyg3z6Q/w-d-xo.htmlsi=VvQ3reqkSasKPC_n
Good tips! thank you
Fab video and you have gained a new sub.. Love your videos.. 👍👍
Thanks very much!
I have the 510. And not only does it share the button issues but also it reallly its not to touchy in the hands. (I hesitate to say "it looks ugly" 😄😂)
BUT it has an amazing laser which is really reliable. Discs that have issues (bought a lot of old heavy used ones and re recorded them) on other devices that I have...they play fine on the 510.
That's useful to know, thanks. It's rare for me to find a disc that won't read where the disc is the problem, but if I do, I'll try it in a N505. Thanks.
Indeed 510 is more convenient, and it’s type-s which is upgrade to type-r. And also, 510 can be “hacked” to get line-out to headphone jack. I have couple of both 505 and 510.
Thank you for this video! I recently bought this exact unit and it was in excellent condition apart from the Menu/Enter button not being pressable. I opened it and found that the dome had collapsed, and this video taught me that I could lift them up so I was able to push the dome back out from the rear. However, when I put it all back together, the button still doesn't work even if the dome is now 'clicking' as it should. Could the dome be permanently damaged somehow so that it doesn't make proper contact, or could it be that the contact point is damaged from the dome being constantly 'pressed down' for a really long time?
I'd clean the circuit board under the dome with IPA or contact cleaner, and replace the dome with one which isn't used as much (and clean that one too). That would be my next step. Good luck.
@@CBitsTech Much appreciate the tip. Any idea where I could start looking for a new dome other than buying other players for parts?
@@rzr82 No, sorry, no idea where you can get the dome caps from.
I had the N505 and I didn't like it. I bought it off eBay "Tested and working" and it lasted about 2 days before it started misbehaving. Sometimes it wouldn't read disks, others it wouldn't play. I could never get the Net MD to work either. I also think it looks ugly. There's something about the button layout that I don't like. I ended up taking my frustrations out on it and it's totally broken now. I think it's long gone, I got rid of a bunch of broken electronics a while ago and it might have been with that lot.
RIP N505. It is pretty ugly. If they're working though, they have all the features you could want. It's a good everyday player if it fits in your skinny jeans 🙂👖
I have both of these models (505 in gold, 707 in silver) and they both have iffy buttons. My remote is also a bit like that too. Wonder why they do that...
I think it's just oxidisation of the contacts. I'm not sure about the remote though, maybe clean the contacts of the remote plug with a cotton bud and IPA.
