I think the stencil issue is simply because it was being pulled up and moved around a little as you went over with the roller. Maybe secure the stencil with a couple pieces of masking tape.
I think you're right and I'd probably also cut off the excess length of the stencil so one could ideally tape down all 4 sides tightly so it couldn't move.
Stencil adhesive would fix this issue
There was paint was on the back of the stencil - you have to clean it off after each use.
I've been using this machine to stencil ammunition boxes for the army almost 20 years now and to be honest it takes a while to get the hang of it. First of all although using a lot of paint will get the job done faster it becomes very messy very fast. I get much better results when i have barely enough paint on the brush/applicator so it requires about 10 passes or even more but the stencils are much more precise. Make sure to have a clean rug around to wipe the board's face and back regularly cause it will gather paint residue and it will ruin your work. The only problem with making a lot of passes with little paint is you need to make sure the board doesnt move on you so hold it firm or use some tape to stay put. There's something very fullfilling about using these old ways of doing things. Sorry for my bad english, not my primary language.
English was great, easy to understand. If you feel like you need improvement id work on punctuation
whenever i did stenciling for the army, i was usually using a rattlecan, but some masking tape to hold the stencil in place would go a long way
Used that same style machine to stencil all the military trucks and aircraft throughout my career along with all the gear we didn't want to grow legs and walk off.
That plastic funnel works great. If you stuff it in the fuel fill hole tight enough to make a seal it won’t let you overfill and prevents spills. I have the old copper ones too but they stay on the shelf.
Our lanterns we just bought because of your suggestion were used with regular unleaded over the weekend. A bit rough when starting but once running they were bright and awesome just like our propane lanterns. Thanks brother and we will use premium from now on most likely, until the time comes when it is unavailable. Hopefully never haha.
Awesome kit! I'm a sucker for doing things the "old way". I use my over 110 year old oil lantern weekly to this day. I buy oil and wick, and I ALWAYS have light. I carry a flashlight that cost over $100 and I've still been left without light a handful of times. But my trusty oil lantern hasn't failed me yet. My dad has an older Coleman lantern like yours that he was given by his father. We still use it now and again when we need some light where there is none. This stuff just works! It HAS worked, DOES work and WILL continue to work! I have nothing against new technology, but I also live by the saying, "They don't make things the way they used to" 100%. They laugh at me now with their bright battery powered lanterns, but someday I might just have the last laugh... and I'll be glad to share my light with my neighbors when that day comes!
How long will one of these lanterns run on a gallon of fuel?
At first I thought this was a little frivolous then I realized how neat this really is. I use a digital label maker for everything in my shop so I really get a kick out of how old school this is.
I still find it frivolous regardless. But if you have the money to waste then it why not. Nothing will beat a good sharpie when you run out of batteries or labels for the digital machine or paint and paper for the letter punch.
I am sure the stencil comes in handy when you have 500 items on a conveyor belt to label but other than that, it is just for vanity or cosmetic reasons.
From a purely practical point of view it is frivolous for home use but it's fun and you will be in demand from friends. This sort of thing you can always sell and get your money back which negates the cost if you have the surplus.
We used those same stencils in the navy except with paint pens instead of the applicator.

You get 6 trys to get it right! I realize the spongy roller is cool, but a quick spray with a rattle can might be a little cleaner. Yet, practice make perfect right?

I have used this exact machine for many years and have found spray paint works best. Light spray at about 10” works best.

If you want to make the hardware look older, you can easily remove the zinc coating by soaking the hardware in a solution of citric acid. I used powdered citric acid for canning
spray the back of the cardboard with glue from an aerosol can and press it down. Paint is seeping past the edges of the letters. Leave it on for a minute or 2. Make sure you use glue that holds it in place but peels off easily. The glue they use to hold T-shirts down to be printed should work.
Rubber cement works good as well !
I didn't think of the glue or rubber cement thing but I was definitely thinking about how it seeped along the backside of the stencil. it also didn't look like he cleaned the back of it off in-between each time (unless I just missed it) and was basically stamping the same overrun each time.
Yup. Masking 101. A light mist of Repositonable Spray Adhesive on the stencil would hold the edges down and leave no residue on the box

To get the latch to fit tighter increase the bend to shorten the latch.
I still use my oil lamps every time the power goes out, and one of my most prized possessions is my grandad's old railroad lantern with red glass!
I love these lanterns and have quite a few. You should definitely make the lantern box. I did one about 10 years ago and love it.
Awesome project!!.I have been wanting to build wood boxes for my lanterns. I have one duel fuel the rest are the original style. But I run unleaded fuel in all of them and my stoves. They work fine. In fact my wife took a picture of me and our younger boy cooking breakfast out on the porch. It was winter. Power was off and we were using the table saw as a stand for the camp stove

You could try mixing glow powder in to the paint, then even in the dark you will even be able to find the gas can to fill up, if you have run out.
I just built one too and followed your instructions I didn’t take notice that you build yours out of 1x5 and ended up building it out of 1x6. It has a little extra wiggle room but it give me space to put a larger rag on the side. Im planning on building a similar box for the coleman 295 i just bought
I tent came at least four weeks every year and I've been doing it for 25 years. Hunting out west, hunting/fishing around home, and some camping for fun on family property. I have three Colman lanterns. Use them all the time. I only use white gas. Colman used to make a neat spring loaded funnel that screwed onto the the white gas can and sealed on the lantern - no muss no fuss. I haven't seen them in stores for a long time. I have a couple of them.
There are all kinds of new things out there for camping. I STILL have my patrol table and kitchen I made 24 years ago. The patrol table is a good project and it makes a heck of a knock down picnic table for camping.

It’s an old antiquated tool until a storm knocks out your power for a week and suddenly it becomes an absolute necessity. It’s like a generator, nobody wants em till they lose power and they sell out so quick you can’t get one.
I have been watching you for years. Please don't take this the wrong way, as I say this with kindness my friend. I am a subscriber and I tune in to each video you post. I just wanted to point out that you do have women who tune in to your channel as well at "Gentlemen". I really enjoy your channel and always look forward to your next video. I love the stories you tell about your Granddad and the fact that you have some of his tools. You are a very good teacher of values and morals. The thing about white gas is that an unopened can will just about last forever, unleaded gasoline, even if treated, especially the ethanol crap will not last a year.

I think when lifting the roller up and repositioning it for the second pass might possibly give a better result.
When only going back am forth the same parts of the roller is touching the same part of the stencil another time. If there is not enough paint on the roller it won't paint properly. By repositioning it could help
My grandpas old pump Coleman stove is one of my most prized possessions
The excess board hanging off the sides of the box is lifting the stencil. It's not flush against the box, causing some paint bleed and some poor coverage.

The original label maker! I have no idea how much that is, but I want one yesterday... My first job out of high school, I was responsible for repurposing military ammunition boxes. Pulling labels/staples and re-inking the labeling on the wooden ammo cases. This takes me back.

Great piece of history that we can all have for rough times ahead.
Glue stick on the back of the stencil will help hold it in place, and help prevent leaking and seepage. It also cleans off real easy. The glue stick that is.

You could also get Luci Lights or other types of solar lights.
A Coleman single burner Sportster duel fuel stove would go nicely with that kit. I love mine. I think I may build a similar box for mine.
My 2000-ish Coleman funnel is aluminum with the same blue felt filter.

Those are really handy. I got one cheap with a ton of replacement plastic strip at a yard sale. Will never need to be charged and just works.
I would love to see this continue. Ide like to see something like a chainsaw kit, hand tool kit, cooking kit, and maybe even one made for a rifle.

Those old lanterns will run on unleaded as well, but (supposedly) after a few years of use, will damage the generator. Have never needed to try it, had a few old times that used um that way for a long time with no issues (& not the dual fuel...). Nice box, I've got a storage spot in my chuck box that I made for all that, lol!
Cool tool, I was not aware these existed. Here I have been using a cricket and free shipping envelopes to make all of mine.

If I'm not mistaken you are not supposed to use premium gas in the lanterns. It should be regular. Because of the octane additives in premium. I could be wrong but that's what I remember being told.

I always wanted one, but laser became available at local makerspace, I use card stock to laser cut the stencils. Spray clear coat first then whatever the color I want.

The old gasoline/white gas lanterns are great. I used propane lanterns some as well but favor the liquid fuel. This was brought to my attention when heading to river one evening to night fish. My propane cylinders were near empty and gas station didn’t sell them. Guess what a gas station does have..unleaded gas, imagine that. After that the propane lanterns are for more well planned trips not spur of the moment stuff like this instant.
The parachute riggers have this machine. I did my name and SSN while on chute shakeout duty. Still have it.

A couple weeks ago I was given a ‘70s model Colman white gas stove with a stand. In extremely good condition. We’re kept stored in an elderly man’s climate controlled basement. Excited to go through it and get it cooking again!
I actually just built one for my gas Lateran but I put a crown on all the way around the top and used a rope handle so the top had no protrusions and I can stack the boxs
You can create stencils using 3D printer if you don't have anything else. Works great, you can make 3D model in few minutes if you know basics, but it takes hour or so to print.

I've had my plastic coleman funnel for about 30 years I think. Still works great.

When I was the kid my grandfather had a hunting cabin that was 10 miles off the road. And it had 3 rooms and each room have a lantern up a lantern up on a shelf and they were all fed with 3 gates copper tubing being used for a gas line from the propane tank pain pain and we had a propane refrigerator and stove. The kitchen had the sink it just drained onto the ground outside and it was fed by a picture pump. Wish I was still back in those times
Interesting trivia. Printer press ink is rubber based. And it doesn't dry. It's absorbed into the paper

I am really curious on why you opt for two watches?
I have many of these coleman lanterns and stoves from 1940s through the 90s and run them all on unleaded, never had a problem, my dad and grandpa ran them on gasoline as far back as I can remember.
I still have my lantern bout 20 yrs old.. has surface rust but I'm thinking of get a knew one.. I feel like it might explode because I barely ever use it know and ran it the other day and it wasnt as bright . Also sounded weird but their was no leaks. I checked before starting it up with a lighter.
That's a lovely old thing. Is it as satisfying to punch each letter as it looks and sounds?
