    As a quilter, I can tell you Tyler’s Grandma’s “blanket” cost way more to make than the YETI blanket. Fabric is easily $13/yard and the minky backing fabric is even more expensive. Then there’s the cost of batting-the inner layer that makes the “blanket” a quilt. Finally, the whole thing has to to be quilted so that all the layers hold together. I’ve made custom designed hockey quilts for each of my grandsons; each quilt cost me more than $350 to make. You’re right about one thing, though, a grandma’s “blanket” is made with LOVE.

    • @recoveringsoul755
      @recoveringsoul755 3 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      strictly as a blanket I agree. He didn't test how easy they were to wash, and that would be needed if you tried to use a quilt as a picnic blanket. Which is probably what the YETI was made for. I have a little picnic blanket, keeps my bum dry on damp grass.
      It is kind of sad how people put no value on handmade things, and treat it like it was free. Clearly It was not and you aren't even talking labor costs. We don't all have someone willing to make us free stuff, well, gift us stuff that wasn't free

We didn't give her much time, then she became a caregiver for a loved one. So we have treasures of hers and the fee things she made. The special things I saw on her shelves for decades became mine. I bought rose perfrumed things because she has rose hip oil on the back of her toilet and Yardley Rose. Their homes had a specific smell, I can't remember anymore. I'm so happy ur family has forever with her blankets. I put cloth items in Ziploc bags, so they don't get damaged or age faster. The plastic bags (zip lock or other) can cause the fibers to decay faster. You're better off to use an old, clean 100% cotton sheet or pillowcase to wrap & store old quilts or fabric items. Or find an acid free storage box. (I made the same mistake with a plastic bag, til I learned how it affected the fabric.)

      Yeah they look like they’d serve very different purposes. As well as you can order that Yeti blanket for $200 but you can’t just order a seemingly high quality very large hand made blanket from grandma. And finding someone to hand make a blanket that good sounds like it’d be more expensive than the yeti blanket.

      No kidding though, homemade quilts are not cheap to produce even the materials alone can get pretty expensive, my mom makes a lot of quilts, anytime someone close to us has a major life event she makes a quilt, materials alone usually cost in the ballpark of $50, and then depending on the quilt it can be between 10-20 hours to make. That doesn’t even include the cost of the machines, which the ones that do the fancy embroidery. Some of the higher end machines are worth more than my first two cars put together.
