During an NTC rotation with 2AD, Ft Hood, back in October 89, one of the soldiers in my platoon questioned why we were there because “The US ain’t never gonna fight another desert war!” Twelve months later I asked him if he remembered what he had said, as we were both in Saudi Arabia for DS/DS.
Hey there! I finally got the chance to see this video! Great Work! I was the idiot who drove you all over the place in the box, looking for a grid so we could leave you with one of our units. Im glad to see that despite my obstructions you got a great story!
I served from 85 to 88 there. Back then we were considered Russian. My tank, a Sheridan was vismoded to look like a T-72. With the whole rotations under the miles harness. 3 years of that.
Was out there back in 85 Airborne Combat Medic w/ 5th inf 3/19 FA outta Ft Polk. Sat in the shade all day and drank cold drinks waiting for evac calls.....😀👍
I was the S-2 with that same arty bn at NTC in June '86 (not to mention three-day "Leaders Recon in Feb) and again in Nov '87. The unit, due to some new (or old?) "regimental system," became 4/1 within a month or two of getting back from that June '86 rotation. I also served as the "Rail Guard OIC," riding all the way from Leesville railyard north to NE through Wyoming to Salt Lake down into Vegas and Yermo where I had to wait in the caboose (where me and five LA ANG, and a 3/19 CWO lived the whole time with water, MREs and an air powered toilet that broke on day 2) for two more days, nine day trip in total. By far the worst part of the trip and had worn me out before day 1 if exercise. Do you remember Chief Widhalm?
@@teller1290 CW3 David J Widhelm I worked directly under him at the troop medical clinic on south fort. Do you know where he is I think of him often.....use to tell me to settle down or he'd give me a shot of thorazine and watch me wander around and drool ok myself and mumble hahahahahahaha! His favorite sauce for MREs was Tiger Sauce.....
@@chrisjones8515 No. I didn't know him well. I remember going over to see him at clinic one day sometime between my first day at Polk (2/1/86) and June NTC rotation. Not sure why I went over there. It may have been mandatory routine thing but I recall thinking if how he reminded me a bit of "Oddball" from "Kelly's Heroes." My other memory of him was on the way out of NTC in either 6/86 or 11/87 (and I don't recall if he was even still there in 11/87), I told him I'd almost outgrown my motion sickness on long trips but he offered me half of a little, blue pill and told me to take it once plane got altitude. It worked like a charm and I actually awoke as we descended for landing at England AFB! I remember he had a dry sense of humor with a dash of cynicism. He said he was from Nebraska. Long time ago. Still have a Ft. Irwin mug I picked up in that trailer gift / commissary thing they had out there back then. Not great memories from Polk, sadly. C.O. and S-3 (who, oddly, I worked for in that unit) not good guys. The guys behind them (and in charge during 11/87 NTC), LTC Quinn, Maj. Church, Maj Brooks wayyy better and better quality people, imo.
@@teller1290 Hahahaha Yup you have a good memory of him he was nuts but funny........and yes I wasn't impressed with alot of the leadership in my unit bunch of assholes as far as I was concerned. I thought to myself if this is the real army I want nothing to do with it.....I remember Captain Smith what a dick he was ,but his wife was a Capt and super smokin hot. He would try to call us to attention but we'd all be watching her if she happened to be around. Hahahahaha he'd get pissed! And no Ft Polk wasn't a fond memory! And sleesville wasn't much better! But Chief Widhelm was a top notch P.A. he knew his shit around medicine for sure.
Was just there last month. It was so unorganized. Some have it better than others. I will make sure I do not go back in the rest of my military career.

Of course, now I ask why do we keep building this faux towns to conduct Muslim police actions and SWAT search warrants. So tired of seeing that.
