I got so frustrated researching vendors on wedding wire, the knot and Zola. I'm in rural Ohio and was getting recommendations for vendors in NY and more that are far out of my 4-5k total budget.

When I worked at a bridal shop we would have to each get 5 positive reviews every 6 months from family, friends or emails we created. This would cancel out the negative reviews and automatically get us "best of The Knot" award. Sketchy to say the least.

I’m so glad you made this video. As a bride myself, the knot was super frustrating. I would be recommended vendors who were thousands over my budget even though I put a very specific budget range on my profile. It was very evident the knot pushes the vendors with the highest capital who are giving the knot the most money. Now, as a wedding planner and coordinator, I will be staying far, far, away from the knot.

GAAP (pronounced as gap) is Generally Accepted Accounting Principles. There's specific rules and standards we're taught as accountants for reporting, especially when it comes to publicly traded companies, which The Knot Worldwide is. If they're screwing with their financial statements in an unacceptable way, it opens them up to investigation from the SEC and potential penalties and lawsuits.
Also, if you're ever buying something, whether it's advertising on a site like The Knot or even just like going down to buy a mattress, and they're doing high pressure sales where you're not allowed any time to think, you HAVE to make the decision right then...walk away.

    • @TesriaT
      @TesriaT 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

I've long thought (after being burned a few times, thankfully for relatively small sums of money) that if a business has to pressure you to sign up or buy something without time to think or research, it's because if you do think about anything they said it won't hold up to analysis, and if you research you'll find out that they're exaggerating or outright lying. So if someone tries to pressure me into buying or signing up on the spot then it's not only an immediate no, but I now have a dim view of that business as a whole and almost certainly won't come back later anyway, even if time to think or research supports the sales pitch (though I probably won't bother wasting time figuring that out anyway). I'll tell other people my opinion of the business/product too, to warn them of the shady tactics.

Sounds like false advertising to vendors going to the knot.
As a bride, I started on Wedding Wire and the knot. I tried getting leads, but some didn't respond and others were far or well out of the budget I had set. The main problem I had was that no one had available pricing and it was super hard to get pricing from the vendor. I never got a vendor from the knot because it was that bad. I also ignored all from wedding wire and zola after a couple of months. All of my booked vendors have been recommended by friends, family or the local wedding facebook pages.
Every time something is offered for free, I try to identify how the company is making their money. It makes sense that vendors are having to pay, but it sounds like they are charging exorbitant funds with no return.

this was so freeing to hear someone else validate my experience. YES this was what I went through. I did book weddings with them, but the ROI was insanely low.
    With gigsalad, I had 3-4 bookings a month paying $40 a month.
With weddingwire, I booked 6 weddings after a full year of paying $300 a month. So I had to pay $600 for every wedding I booked which is just an unbelievable cut and made it not even worth doing.
I quit wedding wire and feel light as a feather now.

What I did was find one vendor like a photographer, especially who is active on social media and posting their work because they almost always tag the other vendors, either in the caption or on the photo itself. So I did a little bit of a treasure hunt to see who was being tagged in my area and what their cost was.

Sounds like a potential UDAAP class action or enforcement action.
Many ad platforms claim positive results but add a disclaimer that they can't guarantee results for you as an individual. It's totally legal if you pay for a service and don't get the leads you wanted - as long as the company provides the core services which could *hopefully* give you leads. But the platform has to be able to back up their claims with prior client aggregate data and avoid making false promises that the services will 100% give you leads. That's just not a realistic promise to make. And they certainly can't fake imposter leads!
Contract law is complicated because yes, the party signing it and paying for the service needs to do due diligence. But if a contract is signed under false pretenses, it's not enforceable. The question is whether the promises made would cross the threshold into the strict legal definition of false advertising. Which, uh, is much more vague than an actual clear definition. Sales tactics that cause time-based pressure aren't illegal on their own, but it's complicated. There's plenty of case law that would probably come into play to help define whether this is fraud.

fun fact a vender can change their business name on the knot which can evade or mislead consumers into thinking that the vendor has not participated in any dubious business practices. My first photographer scammed me and numerous other brides but I had no clue because she kept changing her name of her businesses and deleting negative reviews.

I was on Wedding Wire/ The Knot years ago as a DJ. They'd send me leads from states over 1000 miles away from my area. I would get leads that were scammers and one went as far as sending me a large check for a wedding that of course, I didn't cash. In a few years, I got only a handful of true leads. Definitely not worth the money.

What a joke! The Knot is prime to be taken over! Who is in charge? I left messages for over two months, only to find my Acct Exec doesn’t work for them…Albeit, her voice mail is still active. So when I was in OC - The Knot SUCKED. It worked out that I was paying $300 for reach booking so that ROI was not it...but since I've moved to a smaller area, 80% of my bookings are coming from Wedding Pro platform. Do I suspect that I get fake leads when things go quiet - yes and HELL yes for the OC market. Do I think a lot of it also has to do with market size and how many people are competing in your category - yes. Are they also difficult to work with and salesy - yeup!!! So take what you will from that.

one reason for this is that if you ask for account deletion, they will refuse to delete your profile unless you can prove that you're permanently closed (even if you don't even offer wedding services anymore). And then you have to submit all this proof that you're permanently closed. It's wild. And as you've seen, it makes for a poor bride experience too!

I also want to point out an amazing inn and venue next to me that is not on the knot but absolutely stunning with amazing reviews. It is located in Southern Illinois just 3 or less hours from st. Louis, MO & Memphis, TN & Nashville, TN & Evansville, IN & an hour from Paducah, KY. Illinois bottom comes to a point so it's perfect for couples in other states a good distance. Please look at them if you are looking for a good wedding. I know they are my top pick and very affordable. Labrador Lake House Inn and Wedding Venue is the name. Its in Murphysboro, IL. I wanted to be a wedding planner when I was 20 and I decided to get a degree in hospitality, tourism, and event management. But I still have the instincts of a wedding planner so that's just my advice as well but this is a very wonderful TH-camr that I have watched for years. I suggest people check this venue out too.
I love your videos and if I lived in TX are close I would go to you but I'm all good with your checklist and watching every video.
I just wanted to mention that you don't need a website or an app to just look around and really explore the area that you're in because it's not right for these companies to be scamming people and you can find something perfect for you just by doing enough research and following people like this lovely woman
