"... the 80s being considered one of (if not THE best) decades in horror cinema, a statement I whole heartily disagree with..." Care to make a video discussing reasoning behind this AND which decade you consider the best?
ScorpionGod This is the line that stuck out for me in the whole video. Usually I learn a ton from Ryan, and while I did in this video also, I spent half of it with a nagging resentment cause he said this lol. I’d love to hear his take on it though!
10:23 It's explained in the second movie that Jason survived his "drowning" and grew up as a hermit in the forest surrounding Crystal Lake. Given that this was supposed to occur in the 50s, a good 20-something years before the movies where released/set, it's perfectly reasonable to assume that Jason did indeed just grow up. The ending of the first movie was just a dream sequence.
I have a real love of the folkloric elements of slasher films. My favourite part of Nightmare on Elm Street is that there's a skipping rhyme about a child killer. There's something almost mythological about 'Camp Crystal Lake'. That somewhere in the woods (but nobody can seem to agree where), there's an old abandoned holiday camp. And if you find it, you'll die. It's got that lovely urban myth vibe to it.
I apologize if this is too tangential, Mr. Hollinger: the first video of yours I saw was about the Scooby-Doo movies. I was especially intrigued by your thoughts on _Zombie Island_ . I'm curious if you have checked out the series _Scooby-Doo: Mystery Inc_ , which had a single over-arching mystery and re-introduced the gore of _Zombie Island_ ?
10:27 That is actually answered if you try to chronologically set the first 8 movies in a timeline. You get dates that you can fit smoothly on a timeline. Friday the 13th is inadvertently set in a universe in which the world never left the 80s. It’s themes and vibes progress even into the early 2000s.
@đØpPəŁ ğÅņĢəŘ They enjoy talking about the horror genre, in all it's forms. They made the channel and their series because they had a passion for it but also aren't afraid to criticize it for it's flaws.
Have any of you guys seen the theory that uses Easter eggs, references, and the likes to connect over a dozen horror franchises. Honestly it's been fun to watch at least
I love this franchise, yeah some of the sequels have problems or take a weird direction like Jason in Manhattan or Jason in space, you can still have fun with them. I find myself coming back to the first movie more. I like the idea of a crazy old lady hiding in the woods, talking in her son's voice. Its like Mom & Son (Norman Bates) moved to Camp Crystal Lake.
I remember James (AVGN) mentioned they wanted to do so much with Jason takes Manhattan but couldnt afford all the rental properties ;( ... they had a buncha ideas but nothing got done because it was too expensive. so sad
Friday has definitely always been one of my favourite "Oh good, I don't need to think" series. Just put it on and let the film go insane for my entertainment pleasure... which is why I love Jason Goes To Hell. Yes, Jason is only in it for maybe 15 minutes. Yes, it's basically The Hidden but with a hockey mask. Yes, it's absolutely insane... but I can't help enjoy it. Probably the most over the top in terms of violence, some genuinely likable and fun characters, Creighton Duke is just a delight in every scene he has. It's just so stupid that I end up smiling every time I watch it.
Jason X was great because of how self-aware it was. I remember on the DVD, there was a menu option to skip to just the kill scenes. The liquid nitrogen kill is probably my favorite of the whole series.
Part 4: the Final Chapter is easily the best one. Genuinely likable characters, fun kills, Tom Savini special effects, and Cory Feldman and Crispin Glover in the cast. It’s also that perfect balance between the serious stuff and the more comedic entries that came later as well as being a masterclass of schlock slasher movie pacing.
None of the F13 films are "good". The first 4 are great fun but compared to regular movies, parts 1 and 6 are the only two that they tried to make quality. None of these films even have a plot!
Part VI:Jason Lives....It was a great Frankenstein/Zombie flick...also a good Jason Flick...good characters, well filmed, a kick ass action scene, good effects...surprisingly well acted and kinda funny even
Part 6 is where I feel Jason achieved his peak as a pop culture icon, and the creators really have fun with that. There's nothing more Friday the 13th than Jason vs Tommy. Not to mention the kills are crazy fun, especially that entire sequence where he murders those coworkers playing paintball.
Tom Savini is a legend. He has a special effects school in my hometown and they easily have the best haunted house I've ever been to. It's also interesting seeing someone I look up to so much just randomly walking around town.
Finally, so way back when before I got deep into the batshit craziness of horror the 13th friday came up. I decided that it would be fun to watch the original movie with the folks to see what it was all about. That same night we watched the entirety of 1-8, and I got hooked. After that I finished that series, looked into Kane hodder which led to the hatchet movies, then Nightmare and Halloween.... I know these are really just cheesy horror movies but if they never existed I would never have gotten to have the love of horror and it's great community, hell I wouldn't even be saying what I am. Ryan thank you so much for reviewing this movie, for it's one that will always stick with me
one cool detail about the series is that the ChaChaCha/KaKaKa in jason's theme is a quote from the first movie, but with the syllables cut up and with added echo effects
I love Friday The 13th: Jason Lives the best. It had the right balance of humor and tension. Plus, it was the first time we got a Jason who was, without a doubt, 100% dead, before the movie started.
I love this franchise, it’s my favorite horror franchise. Part IV: The Final Chapter is my favorite Friday the 13th film. I love how it not only serves as the first ending to the series, but the beginning of the Tommy Jarvis trilogy. There are some great characters in IV as well as some of the best kills in the series as well. Regarding how Jason was alive in Part II, they tried to make it as he never drowned before Part I. Like he washed up on shore across the lake and just lived in the wood and later saw his mom get decapitated when he was an adult, thus causing him to murder people. Now, however you like that way of explaining how Jason is alive is really up to you, but it’s the only way to explain why he’s alive without anything supernatural coming into the series, at least at that time. It’s a fun series to watch every so often and it’s a series that defiantly influenced the horror genre, for better and for worse.
"The 80s being considered one of (if not THE best) decades in horror cinema, a statement I whole heartily disagree with." Finally someone says it! The best horror decades are either the 1930s or the 1970s. And the 2010s is a good runner up for third spot.
I might be wrong but I think the reason Jason is an adult is simply because he didn't actually die as a kid. He lived and grew near the camp. That's why they actually killed him in part 4 and then we had him revive as a zombie in Jason Lives which is when he actually becomes supernatural
I find it painfully ironic how the franchise that shamelessly tried to be Halloween, would end up being ripped off by Halloween years later. Even now, most slashers are just Jason Voorhees in different skins - just look at the new Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
I have to say the Remake Friday the 13th was my favorite. I just think the more aggressive and intense Jason turning him into a true hunter instead of a stalker like Michael was truly terrifying. Being able to run and show off the remarkable feats like the throwing axe and traps makes you keep on your toes.
If seen in a theatre, in the intended format, Friday the 13th Part 3D is my favorite. But that's tough to do these days, so then I say the only one with a Crispin Glover dance. Final Chapter.
The 2009 remake is my personal favorite. I thought it brought new life into the franchise, and actually made Jason scary again, while also being really entertaining
James Rolfe from Cinemassacre actually theorized that that Jason in each film after 1 was just some different guy in a mask, and that Jason actually did die.
My favorite is probably the first one. But with the whole ghost kid to man thing I just assumed he could grow because he's, well, a dead supernatural thing. It's not a perfect theory because the second one tries to make you believe he's alive, but I didn't see that one until much later.
I went through a Friday the 13th binge a while ago and I gotta say there is a sort of arc to the first 4 films. Part 4 was actually really cool (to me) and part 5 tried something knew that I also thought was interesting. After that it lost me. Basically part 4 is my favourite I think.
The reason Jason is a adult in the sequels is because he didn't drown. That's why he has a fully built cabin in the woods. He didn't drown and survived in the woods the whole time
That's a plothole...he was found dead as a boy in the first film narrative....plot twist....it's not Jason that we see in the movies...it's someone else
Thank God I'm not the only person who thinks Jason X is the best Friday The 13th movie. I've seen plenty of movies that have tried to take an established franchise and put it in space, not just horror, but none of them worked for me like Jason X worked for me, Jason was just perfect for this, it was his peak. Well this movie and the 2009 Friday The 13th. What can i say? I'm always here for Jared Padalecki
This is now the video I'm going to reference if someone asks me "why do you like Friday the 13th?" I know it's not the great analytical breakdown you've done for other films, but I think you've summed up what people like about this series very succinctly. Well done man!
Great video Ryan! I was wondering if you could do a video on the topic of the horror genre as a whole and how so many genuine horror films are constantly being put into another, more "highbrow" genre than Horror whenever a great horror movie pops up (like Jurassic Park being only ever called an adventure film when the premise is pretty much Frankenstein's monster meets dinosaurs meets slasher villains). Like suddenly the genre isn't good enough anymore and some want to call the film a psychological thriller, for example. It'd be nice to see a video on that with your thoughts.
Gotta give the 80's credit for new monsters like the 30's and early 40's...we got Jason Freddy Pinhead Chucky and a few smaller known killers...creativity was on max display
I honestly loved the Friday The 13th reboot! It was really very Friday the 13th and knew that. It wasn’t trying to reinvent Jason, it was trying to make him scary for modern audiences and bring back the joy of a slasher.
The Final Chapter is my favorite. Memorable & funny while still keeping a mostly serious tone. I also think it probably has some of the best characters in the series
As a filmmaking writing a script that I hope to be my first feature, I struggle to make it different from other thrillers while still delivering on what people want. Seeing this gave me confidence that entertainment in horror can be a good thing even today.
I feel like the "best" Friday the 13th and my 'favorite' are wildly different. Favorite: Part 3. Best: Part 4 (if you ignore the "OH GOD, HE'S KILLING ME, HE'S KILLING ME!)
For how thorough you usually are, I’m surprised you missed the part in the beginning of Part 2 that plainly explained Jason’s death was a rumor and he didn’t actually die. His mother BELIEVED he was dead. His first actual death was in Part 4.
The Final Chapter is still my favorite. I grew up in a small rural lake community and it was the first Friday I ever saw as a little kid. The first thing my wife said when she saw where I grew up was "Now I understand why you like Friday the 13th so much."
@@zacheryrodgers6983 You'd be surprised. Every horror group I've ever been in on social-media Friday The 13th seems to be a more popular franchise than any other. It doesn't mean all that much to me but there's plenty that feel differently.
I can watch the friday movie because of the camp and gore... but the nightmare movies can get just so gross and bad, especially since I feel the urge to vomit and body horror
My favorite has to be Part VII. It was one where only a clip of it as a child scared me terribly. Then seeing it as an adult was pretty cathartic. It's also one with a bonkers premise, especially with the final girl having crazy psychic powers.
My Favorite would be Friday The 13th Part 6. It made sense to me right after watchin' part 4 & 5. How the stories connect, the kill counts were cool, But especially the intro of Jason's revival. Just Pure Awesome.
I like Jason's humanity of why he kills, he has been through a lot but it doesn't justify any of the people he killed but it makes me feel for him and almost gives me hope to find that in someone that decides to do those things. Jason is at his best when he isn't used as some crash test dummy who just kills, he is a human with a human name that has human reasons, simple and effective and he has his own style and look.
Favorites? The first two when I'm leaning toward more legit chills and relatable characters. The sixth when I want a silly monster movie with a theme song by Alice Cooper.
glad you called Cunningham for riding the coattails of talented people 😂. part 4 is my personal favorite. Corey Feldman and crispen glover are great in it.
I LOVED this one! I love that you do your analysis on these types of movies as well as the critically acclaimed ones. These movies need love too! Thanks bro!
My favorite is the one you forgot to mention: 'Never Hike Alone', one of many fan made uploaded to You Tube. It's more frightening and tense than the rest of the "original" franchise... Thanx, Ryan!!! Where's my shark movies special?
My fav is part 7 mostly for his look Thats the best unmasked Jason ever in my opinion, there’s even detail to past trauma or damage or whatever you wanna call it making it feel like there’s nothing he won’t get back up from so what’s the point, don’t try to fight it, JUST RUN.
Yes Michael was the original Boogeyman. Freddy is the Boogeyman of your nightmares which becomes a reality. And is my second favorite slasher... But Jason is a killing machine. Killing is his business.... And business is most definitely good.
Jason X is my favorite too. Lol Unironically. I know it’s terrible, but it’s hilarious. It’s fun. It plays to while also poking fun at the conventions of the previous films.
Thank you for analyzing the series and not just counting kills and talking AT us like a talk show host. I usually enjoy The Final Chapter the most while rewatching these, but Jason Lives is underrated as a self-aware slasher
CarloisBuriedAlive well not all kill counting Chanel’s are bad. Dead meat is a really great kill counting channel because it’s entertaining sure he talks to us like a tv show host but it’s more entertaining then other kill counting channels check him out if you haven’t but due to this comment you probably have already
Ok. So, this will sound weird, but I like how Jason is the most recognisable undead. He is a zombie/revenant (more likely recenant) with his mum being a part that makes him go on to do kills. Idk, I like to have an idea about someone getting Jason's mom out of the deiver seat so Jason is without her influence and has some of his own ideas. I might be out of the cannon, and I don't care. Hell I had ideas to give Jason a fuckin Stand (obligatory JoJo bullshit)
My top 3 are: 3) Part 3 in #D 2) Jason X 1) The 2009 reboot.......I like how the reboot takes what is best about the first 3 original movies and and condenses them into one solid entertaining and well made movie
*What is the BEST Friday The 13th film?* Let me know in the comments!
Ryan Hollinger JASON X all the way lol
Ryan Hollinger I liked the 2009 version
halloween H20,
Ryan Hollinger none
Part 4 and 6 imo. Aside from that, Jason X isn't actually that terrible 🤣
Why didn’t you put this up this Friday.. the 13th (not that I’m complaining, I’m happy to watch it now haha)
*shrugs* Close enough for me
At least now I’ll already be educated for the Friday the 13th marathon I do on Friday
He would have had to wait until December.

Well, not to mention that Ghostbusters is considered to be a "horror movie" being categorized back in the 80s.
ScorpionGod This is the line that stuck out for me in the whole video. Usually I learn a ton from Ryan, and while I did in this video also, I spent half of it with a nagging resentment cause he said this lol. I’d love to hear his take on it though!

ScorpionGod Right? I’m actually just responding again hoping to increase the likelihood he will see it 😂
same I wanna know what he thinks is the best. Cuz, I personally do agree with that statement.
I can always count on Ryan Hollinger for scholarly illumination on horror lore. 😊
Lore keeps getting disrespected and devolves in most franchises.
Best part of Halloween when I was a kid was the Friday the 13th marathon.
AMC was so clutch back then
I remember when I was a kid, seeing the movies on USA and TNT regularly.
This Halloween I am going to watch stranger things.
which ones did you watch?
Yes!!
Thorne you have forgotten vampire rock
Its also kind of like Steven King's IT.
legendre007 the series is like twin peaks
Lots of fan films filling that void - including the "Never Hike Alone" and soon to be released "Jason Rising"

this would be a such a cool collaboration!! two of my favorite channels ever
Be careful Ryan, before you know it we'll have a Friday the 13th cinematic universe spanning 20 films over the course of a decade.
Still better than remaking it ten times tho
That's basicly Freedy vs Jason.
It's climax better be Ash vs Freddy vs Jason
Have any of you guys seen the theory that uses Easter eggs, references, and the likes to connect over a dozen horror franchises. Honestly it's been fun to watch at least
I wouldn't mind
I love this franchise, yeah some of the sequels have problems or take a weird direction like Jason in Manhattan or Jason in space, you can still have fun with them. You should watch Crystal Lake Memories: The Complete History of Friday the 13th. Its 7 hours but its worth it.
I loved it due to the sheer presence Jason has, and the fact that he's the Stanley Kubrick of serial killers
Friday has definitely always been one of my favourite "Oh good, I don't need to think" series. Totally agree. Although I think the 80s has the highest quantity of good horror films.
The Friday the 13th movies, the Saw movies, the Phibes films and Theater of Blood are all great because of all the creative kills!
I'm expecting a breakdown of Terminal Invasion as your next video now
Jason X was bizarrely self aware, and way more thought went into it then a lot of people seem to give it credit for.
That's the issue ...this series makes no sense so trying to put effort into it is dumb...fans just want kills
I might be wrong but I think the reason Jason is an adult is simply because he didn't actually die as a kid. He lived and grew near the camp. That's why they actually killed him in part 4 and then we had him revive as a zombie in Jason Lives which is when he actually becomes supernatural

Yup. While Halloween ignited the slasher craze. Friday The 13th was the most successful and mainstream at doing it.
I always thought the ending of Part 1 was a twist on Psycho either way it's one of the few decent Friday movies
It totally was confirmed by the screenwriter haha
The funny thing about Friday the 13th Part 1 they made a director's cut version of that movie.

My favorite is Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives. I loved how meta it was, as well as how it added a more comedic aspect to the series.
Why does this channel consistently perfectly hit my niche
Part 2 is technically written in the future, it takes place a few years after the movie's release date.
Part 6 Jason Lives. It's fun and self referential without being a parody unlike Jason X
The reason Jason is a adult in the sequels is because he didn't drown. That's why he has a fully built cabin in the woods. He didn't drown and survived in the woods the whole time

I don't know, slasher films in the 80s(Not all horror films) were bad, but kinda fun.

Finally someone who doesn't think 80s were great decade for horror, thank you
Well of course it not especially when I'm ( one day) hopefully going to change/renew horror
You’re comment oozes ego.
Gotta give the 80's credit for new monsters like the 30's and early 40's...we got Jason Freddy Pinhead Chucky and a few smaller known killers...creativity was on max display
@@Shlankyman545 What do you mean?
I honestly loved the Friday The 13th reboot! It was really very Friday the 13th and knew that. It wasn’t trying to reinvent Jason, it was trying to make him scary for modern audiences and bring back the joy of a slasher.
The Final Chapter is my favorite. Memorable & funny while still keeping a mostly serious tone. I also think it probably has some of the best characters in the series
I love Freddy Vs. Jason because seeing them duke it out is a fun ride and honestly, sometimes that's just what I want. A crappy but fun horror flick
I'm just here for your accent :D
And of course for your well articulated and thought through analyses :)
As a filmmaking writing a script that I hope to be my first feature, I struggle to make it different from other thrillers while still delivering on what people want. Seeing this gave me confidence that entertainment in horror can be a good thing even today.
Not really horror but I'm curious as to what your take on ''Secret of NIMH'' would be like :u
One of my favorite non Disney animated films right behind the Land Before Time
Friday the 13th is my favorite horror franchise
And this friday 13 is my birthday😱
Excelente video y Saludos desde México!
Can you please make a video about American remakes of Asian horror movies? Thanks
I feel like the "best" Friday the 13th and my 'favorite' are wildly different. Favorite: Part 3. Best: Part 4 (if you ignore the "OH GOD, HE'S KILLING ME, HE'S KILLING ME!)
Allegedly that's based on an actual stabbing Joe Zito heard about, people say weird shit when they die apparently...
nah the best is Jason Lives
For how thorough you usually are, I’m surprised you missed the part in the beginning of Part 2 that plainly explained Jason’s death was a rumor and he didn’t actually die. His mother BELIEVED he was dead. His first actual death was in Part 4.
The Final Chapter is still my favorite. I grew up in a small rural lake community and it was the first Friday I ever saw as a little kid. The first thing my wife said when she saw where I grew up was "Now I understand why you like Friday the 13th so much."
Jason X is my favorite but the kills are kinda wack
I think part 1 is the best but I love them all they just get more insane over time which I enjoy.
Nightmare On Elm Street series over Friday The 13th series all day long.
Well duh. I don't think even if it is a competition. Nightmare/Freddy all the way.
@@zacheryrodgers6983 You'd be surprised. Every horror group I've ever been in on social-media Friday The 13th seems to be a more popular franchise than any other. It doesn't mean all that much to me but there's plenty that feel differently.
Both great in their respective ways
I can watch the friday movie because of the camp and gore... but the nightmare movies can get just so gross and bad, especially since I feel the urge to vomit and body horror
@@NoirFan84 Nightmare on elm is dead movies friday The 13TH movies and halloween movies is better and stronger
Just found your channel and am slowly binging your content! Keep it up dude 👍
I LOVED this one! I love that you do your analysis on these types of movies as well as the critically acclaimed ones. These movies need love too! Thanks bro!
I love this entire franchise and I am not ashamed to say it. I have them and watch them frequently and The Final Chapter is my favorite .
My favorite is the one you forgot to mention: 'Never Hike Alone', one of many fan made uploaded to You Tube. It's more frightening and tense than the rest of the "original" franchise... Thanx, Ryan!!! Where's my shark movies special?
My fav is part 7 mostly for his look
Thats the best unmasked Jason ever in my opinion, there’s even detail to past trauma or damage or whatever you wanna call it making it feel like there’s nothing he won’t get back up from so what’s the point, don’t try to fight it, JUST RUN.
Jason X is an absolute riot
I dont know Ryan. There's something about you're analyses that gets me to watch every one of your videos. Good job my Irish bro.
Yes Michael was the original Boogeyman. Freddy is the Boogeyman of your nightmares which becomes a reality. And is my second favorite slasher...
But Jason is a killing machine. Killing is his business....
And business is most definitely good.
My favorite is the 7th one. Such an hysterical and enjoyable ride. 11/10 Especially the lake scene with Tina's father
Jason X is my favorite too. Lol
Unironically. I know it’s terrible, but it’s hilarious. It’s fun. It plays to while also poking fun at the conventions of the previous films.
I remember binging all TWELVE of these damn movies never having see them before... it was slightly painful but also fun
That's the worst way to watch them...you need to watch them weekly or monthly maybe even yearly on rewatches...otherwise they just run together
