#1 tip for plasma deck: Don't get violet vessel as the final boss. Buy every voucher you can, skip when the button is for an extra voucher; do absolutely anything to get that reroll, or else sit on luchador or bones for the entire run if you must.
With the purple stake scoring scaling, I tend to try to build my run with a pivot toward big xmult in mind. Relying on chips is tenuous even with the normal ante 8 bosses, let alone the violet vessel.
Possibly dumb take alert: I feel like it's not necessarily 4OAK that eats 3OAK, it's actually flushes. Jupiter and Venus both come with the +2 mult, which makes stuff like glass and steel and Photograph better for those than for pairs, but individual tarot cards tend to do more for flush consistency than 3OAK consistency (Strength targets two cards, while any of the four suit-changers target three). Having an actually decent amount of mult from the "sinful" common jokers is kinda nice for shop consistency too, and then there's always the specter of the flush house pivot too (whereas a 4OAK, 5OAK, etc pivot from 3OAK involves making a bigger hand, therefore you'll want hand size). The biggest strength of 3OAK, I'm reasonably certain, is blue seals. You can have 3OAK in hand, ready to go, and still discard five at a time with the default 8 hand size. This improves the value of your held in hand effects, obviously, but Venus is also the only planet card (other than Mars obviously) that grants more than +1 mult for a hand of less than five cards, which means you don't need as much scaling mult from other sources (or even just get by with flat mult until you can find xmult). With a hand size increase from any source, you can also hold two pair in hand while discarding five, which means the number of outs in your deck doubles (depending on previous deckbuilding obv). IDK, it hasn't come up for me a ton either, but it seems not that bad.
This was such a treat!!! Three of a kind is my favorite hand, (despite not having played the game lol) and I've never EVER seen anyone do a three of a kind run! (well except for that one observatory run where doc got a venus card early and started perkolating it but that doesnt really count) I was also the comment he mentioned in the video!!! (probably) I've been schooled, and I learned something!
I've had a lot of success with 3OAK on the "consistency decks" (Abandoned and Erratic, which it's very funny to think of Erratic as a "consistent deck"). The scaling being better than Flushes, you'd think it would make a decent "beginner" hand, but sort by Suit is just too powerful. But man... Full House is so disappointing, it's like the 5OAK of the normal hands.
how did you get so good at the face-down deduction thing? like at 21:15 why can't it be your jack of diamonds? because diamonds comes after spades and clubs in balatro - right? when you sort by rank it would show up as the last jack if it was the jack of diamonds. but that's as advanced as my thinking gets - why can't it be a queen or an ace? maybe you have a video or a section of a video where you go over this?
So what he is doing here is swapping between rank and suit, which the suits are then broken up and sorted by rank, so the reason he 100% knew it was a a queen was because separated into suits it stayed between the King and Jack of spades, this example in particular is really good rng, but that trick can be used to get rough ideas on what you have
@@zimzamington I'm not asking how he knew about the queen of spades - that one is fairly obvious! I'm asking how he knew about the king of diamonds right after, which I can't work out. looking again I see how he narrows it down to either K or Q of diamonds but not how he picks between them
@@somniadso with that I’d have to say it’s due to the order being spade, hearts, clubs, diamonds. Since it was to the left of the queen but kept being moved before the ace it would have been impossible to a queen of diamonds due to the fact that diamonds are to the right of spades if they are the same rank, that card was to the left, sorry for misunderstanding lol
i wish the incentive for 3oak was a bit greater because it's so fun, it feels just slightly underwhelming compared to some other other hands, which can win runs more consistently
22:20 you can actually gain a couple dollars in this shop, if you buy the astronomer, then buy the planet, then sell both you get the two dollars + a dollar of interest its even 3 whole dollareedoos
Plus even more after rerolling, since we have plenty of money to do so. Not 100% whether or not I'm keeping my current Jokers, though, in which case we wouldn't have room for Astronomer.
My Balatro game plan has devolved into getting as many of one card as possible to do four of a kinds, three of a kinds is a really good fallback for when I can't quite fix my deck well enough to make 4OK's consistent
34:48 I wonder if the better play would've been to play high card like once before the actual straight so you could guaranteed get the blue seal on straights.
Actually, one thing to consider is getting a saturn increases your chips+mult by 33 on only straights, but playing a second straight increases your chips+mult by 30 for every hand. So hypothetically the planet could've made up for if you missed the second straight. So purely based on what actually happened it was basically the same or even better that you went for the second straight. The fact you didn't get the planet card is made up for by the fact you got the straight (though that would've been even better). So basically the only real punish there would've been not getting another straight. With that in mind, idk what the odds are I'm gonna guess probably what you did was better.
...That comment only applies because this is plasma deck btw lmao. Obviously the value of getting the extra chips vs getting the planet card would be harder to calculate on uhhh, any other deck lmao. Also 40:06 ayyy, he considered it.
41:04 in this situation, having only 9 total planet cards available to be found, 5 of the possibilities are locked, what would happen if the jumbo celestial pack was opened here? Would there be a duplicate planet?
Suppose you have a pretty high level Hand, one Joker giving you +60 Mult, one x2 Joker, and one x3 Joker. That sounds like a pretty strong build, right? In this case, your Chips and Mult end up being equal already, but the Plasma Deck demands double the scoring requirements. The build in this example loses to the Violet Vessel. While the "balancing" causes you to score more points than you might otherwise, "more" doesn't always amount to "twice as much."
@drspectred OH I completely missed the 2x base part lmao. yeah no it makes sense if you tried to balance chips/mult like with other decks you'd make your life twice as hard.
3oak is the thinking man's hand
And for that reason, I'm out
17:15 better safe than pregnant 💀
28:25 "Maybe we can make the straights work for us" the professor advocating for LGBT-run gulags 😨
at last

My first 3 runs to the final boss on plasma gold were violet vessel. I wasn’t that good back then so these attempts were rare. It was a struggle

3oak is LocalThunk's most played hand according to a post he made on discord
guess he really likes veanits
It’s ok…
When it’s in a 3way…

i kind of wish that 3oak and full house got buffs to their planet cards (3oak eats full house, and 3oak takes a while to get off the ground)
@@conz2078 Yeah and maybe 5OAK could use 5 or 10 more chips.

How have you not played?! It’s on mobile now
3oak feels like wednesday, not here nor there
3oak is friday. i dont know what i mean by this but it feels right
I had no idea about the planet card in the consumable slot for celedtial packs trick. Bit of a game changer!
I can’t think of a single winning run that I’ve had that used 3oak, not for lack of trying! This will make Monday evening palatable. 🎉
Not for lack of trying!
@ I’ll learn one of these days…
Just realize I have never had a Full House run on gold stake ever
always nice to see a decently large venus

5oak is way better than flush 5. It's just a little worse than 4oak.
42:05 but doc you could take the Soul as Leaf fodder
I usually go for 3oak when i get a blackboard, makes triggering it much more doable

Dang Venus is sneaky powerful
Bro let’s the intrusive thoughts win

A man got holes in the front, too.

There'd be a duplicate Pluto, yeah. And for Tarot Cards, the default duplicate is Strength.
3oak is the Tuesday of poker hands

huh always thought plasma was op cause it's a square average and goes as ~a²/4
