to answer your question: I'm glad you say 'homestead lifestyle', because I think a real homestead is out of my reach. But I do what I can to grow (more and more) 'edibles' and do other activities I consider part of the homestead lifestyle (like making and repairing my clothes). I started that lifestyle step by step. Probably the biggest struggle is: to think 'I can not do that ...', to fight your own negative thoughts.

Than you Moreno, great videos and content. My wife, 2y old son and me are starting similar project in Croatia. We had 2 options, 4 hectars land in the mountain (990m altitude) or 1h mediteranian dry climate land. We decided for the small one, as it is closer to the shore, infrastructure etc. We are building a house there. This is the down point, as hous is draining all our money and energy. We have started gathering infrastructure for homesteading/farming, but transitioning from city life and present yob has to be posponed until hous is usable for living. Hope to transfer in next year and start 100% homsteading and farming of the land.

I've been watching other homesteaders in Portugal and were frustrated when I saw how they struggle with the water issue during the dry months. None of them tried swales and are just complaining of low ground water. I am so happy to see you taking the initiative of water retention in your soil. I foresee great success in your venture although it is going to be a tough journey.

Portuguese farmers have always built swales and dams for water retention but Portugal is by the ocean , it looks very dry during summer and it doesn't rain but the humidity is very high , they have to build a tunnel , the hot air in the dark and cooler tunnel will condense water and create a stream to feed the swales , wells and ponds.
I just checked the weather for the next 10 days in central Portugal and temps will be between 16ºc during the night and 37ºc during the day , the humidity will be between 90 and 100% by the coast and between 80 and 90 in the interior.
There is more water in the air than in the ground , most rural properties have water mines , they just collapsed or are blocked as they need regular cleaning because only stones , no cement , were used to build them and the dirt gets through the walls and celling.
Here you can see a water mine.

A Dutch farmer is bound to dig swales, Dutch farms use them to regulate the water level for their fields and they’re used to retain as well as drain water, we call them “sloten” plural and “een sloot” singular.

@@terra7066 pretty sure by the looks of it, they are somewhere in the middle interior of the country, maybe more to the north. I am half-crying while watching this. When I was still in high school, several people offered to help me go to college as long as it's an agriculture course. I refused, not having any appreciation for it. I wanted to go to the big cities and live the "high-end" life. Shortcut to present, I did finish college and now have a successful corporate career... only to realize that what I really wanted was already offered to me 15 years ago, and I totally missed it. It took me that long to realize what really matters to me! And now, my heart hurts with yearning to be able to start something like you guys have now... Right at the time when I'm drowning in debt and bills and parenting and everything. In the next 2 weeks, I am leaving the city life with my partner and our 1 year old boy, find a little piece of land in the province that we can call our own, with the very little money we have. People around us may think we're crazy, but it doesn't matter. Better take risks now than regret another 15 years of my life.
Thank you for your video. It gives me additional inspiration.

In Australia some areas are very arid. What we do is have a 3 metre veranda around the house. This stops the heat beating in the windows and helps cool the house, This also helps asthe extra roof surface area aids in catching more rainwater, which can be stored for later. I would dig a huge hole where you want the house and concrete it making an underground tank and have a suspended slab over the top and then build the house on top of that. This would always have cool flooring in the summer. These are just ideas to kick around. Aussies are very good at managing water in arid areas.. Good luck, you are doing a good job. However don;t go clearing the land until you are ready to use it. Something in the soil is better than nothing. Roots stabilize the soil and plants produce carbon in the soil. Bare ground just dries it out and makes it un fertile.

    • @helicart
      @helicart ปีที่แล้ว +9

They could build the house half underground too and have a glass wall on the south side, which will reduce heating and cooling costs. These things are so simple, but impact the liveability of the house forever.
Seems like they don't have a lot of top soil.
I wonder about the economics of this block. It's isn't impossible to get it productive, but they will need a lot of organic matter = more dollars.
Growing season will be short with hot summers. Many plants will bolt early. They would eventually benefit from using greenhouses to control temps better, but then that's hard on this block with its steeper slopes.
Good luck to them. I presume they have a market to sell stuff within 30 minutes drive

Hasham bhai, I'm an overseas born Pakistani and would love to come back and resettle one day in Pakistan and especially would love to start implementing such systems in the parts of Pakistan that need it most. I've been watching Andrew Millison who gives a lot of detail about permaculture and features a lot of good examples, including some inspiring examples from rajasthan, India. There's plenty we can do to help Pakistan. Hopefully I'll be there one day soon and getting my hands dirty myself to see this important work get done

Agree. My parents bought 27 acres or "wasteland" on a tropical island when I was a child. They turned that 27 acres in a permaculture food forest long before there was any name to it. As i grew on the farm I learned from my parents. They grew varieties of veggies, 12 different fruits, 4-5 types of berries, seveat. Varieties lentils & beans, cows for milk, butter, cheese and lassi, goats for meat, bulls to plough, chickens for eggs and meat. All home-mDe compost, fertilizer, ect. My dad design and hand-dug water catchment, cesspool, a well. We were one of the most well-to-do families in that rural village. From that homestead farm my dad was able to open up his dream photography studio in town 4-5 miles away. Other people sought his knowledge and built their farms around us. In couple weeks my entire family is going to the island to visit and see our family homestead. It's a 16 hour flight and 2.5 hours drive from the airport. My parents Re long gone but their permaculture farming technique lives on in us. My siblings practice permCulture as well.

Putting the water back into the ground was how those lands got farmed for hundreds of years. Having said that one of the methods I use in Australia for druight gardening is the Wicking bed, the other method I use is Aquaponics. Wicking beds are easier to do than aquaponics and make using natural fertilizer tea to add nutrients back into the ground very simple. One other point I would bring up is the magnificent way your approaching the task at hand. Drought prone areas can be rehabilitated and the way your doing it is one of the few that work. The natural springs increase and even neighbours will notice the difference over time. Keep it up.

Very interesting video, I'm curious to see the progress and how your develop your plot of land. Make sure your property is fire proof, or at least fire resistant. As a portuguese, I can't stress this enough. The dry, hot summer months in Portugal cause countless forest fires, and as morbid as it sounds, you do not want to find yourself trapped in your property if your surroundings are burning. I'm sure you'll find a clever way to deal with it!
