Like James I have battery ones, and have had them 5 years and only had to replace the batteries in the last two months. Mine might be an older gen as they did/do need the wifi and I discovered (not Nest despite some time with them on support) that if you use network repeaters you need to unplug them during the install process (very odd). But when combined with the thermostat and the nest hello and outdoor camera, it is a good set-up!!!

My battery ones are three years old soon, still on original batteries. No issues with them so far.

Hi, the serial number on the box will tell you the date of manufacture I believe, there is is a 4 digit number in the middle such as 0719 which indicates the unit was manufactured in week 7 of 2019, so if you go to a store you can check prior to purchase, although in the current lockdown this is not so easy

Thanks Craig, I was not aware of that. However, like you say, only going to help if able to buy / inspect in person.

@@SpectrumGeeks From the Serial Number (since you cannot see date of manufacture), digits 9&10 = Week Number, 11&12 = Year. Oddly enough, I bought 3x of these from Google Store who then shipped me products that were over 2-years old (for full price!). Of course I demanded replacements as they lost 20% of their value/life. They apologies and promised to ship me devices manufactured in 2021. As it turned out, they shipped me refurbished replacements that were 14 months old!! This has nothing to do with the battery life (mine are connected to power), but actual usable life. They stop working once 10-years old. Period! I'm returning them all for a full refund and will never buy another Nest Protect from them.

@@blakrj Wow thats a sucky experience. I understand though, its a shame though as the product does work well.
Cheers for the serial number info though.

Scroll to 5 minutes and then start. So many stories, just get to the point man. Why blabber for nothing like a grandmother. Just get to the point when you demo anything unless you love to jabber.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, and sorry my style of video is not for you, but this also why I add chapters so people can skip to the bit most relevant to their interests.

Just received mine today (2nd gen) from Currys and it has been manufactured 5 years ago in 2019, it goes back obviously for a refund, don't think so will buy another one, don't need this hassle.

If you do decide to buy again, buy from somewhere that typically would sell alot of them, such as Amazon is my experience.

Had nest thermostat and nest prote t .... all 4 protects died early as well as thermostat, which bately lasted 2 years. Had to call nest about it numerous times.
Complete and garbage. I did the smart thing and bought "dumb" smoke / co and thermostats.
    No issues yet.

Sounds like you had an unfortunate experience, mine are doing well and recently bought 3 more.

You can also see the replace by date in the app for each one after installing so you don't have to remove them to check.

Cheers Shaun, just looked. Nice to find it in the technical info for the device once added to the app.

Incorrect. The manufactory date and shelve date are calculated in the life expectancy. The actual life expectancy is 12 or 15 years or so.

Thanks for sharing. I didn't see this version of information on the Nest Website. Are you able to share the source of this information for others?
