As a boy of 9 years old I remember seeing the goals on the BBC news and feeling disappointed. I remember Emlyn Hughes who had a fall out with Revie many years later being asked about his memory of this match. He said we got murdered and it could have been a lot more than 2-0. MacFarland was guilty of some very reckless tackling on Graziani and got away with it. No wonder they kicked Keegan black and blue at Wembley. Having watched the game now both sides were guilty of some nasty challenges. In the modern era there would have been many yellow cards for both sides. Who would have thought Italy's No.8 would be England Manager one day?

For me the nadir of England's mid 70s descent into mediocrity. Revie handing out caps like confetti, never identifying a preferred team. Cherry, Greenhough, Mills, Clement...decent professionals but not international ability. A midfield of Brooking, Cherry and Greenhough is basically 2 defenders playing in midfield.
