Papa Do Run Run went by the name Papa Do Run Da Run in the early seventies. They played at my junior high school in Garden Grove California at Alamitos Jr. High School in 1972
in 1974 these guys came and played at my school. i forget what the occasion was but it was an assembly. friggin' awesome then, still just as awesome today. i also think i saw them one other time at disneyland. good stuff no matter how you slice it!
I was lucky enough years ago to see these guys at the Mahaffey Theater in downtown St Petersburg, Fl . If I remember correctly they introduced themselves as Jan & Deans backup band before they began . The Theater is not that large and my wife and I were close to the front row. We had a wonderful time with this band playing all the stuff I grew up with as far as Jan&Dean and The Beach Boys music. It’s been many years now and I had completely forgotten all about that time in my life until I saw this on Utube. This was the exactly as how I remember it . Today’s date is the 27th of July , 2021 and I will be 68 next month . My how time flies! I won’t lie, watching this made me tear up a bit . Bought back my youth for a few minutes. Thank you. Paul Smith, St Petersburg, Fl
So this is where Adrian Baker is hanging out! I caught him and his band a couple of times in England and they were magic. As The Tonics, Aero, M-Squad et al he made great singles as well. Thanks for posting this.
Donni….the singer of California Girls, and Jimmy Jo Rush, the bass player, are the founders of this group. And my friends. One of the greatest live performing bands in Southern California. If you ever saw them, you felt the magic. Incredible…Jamie
Ive been to about 50 BB concerts and another 20 BW performances…..this is the best California Girls performance Ive ever listened to…..taking nothing away from the BB!s or BW.
MAN! FANTASTIC!!! AS A PROFESSIONAL ENTERTAINER, HERE IN THE UK, I sang these songs in my stage shows, and played The Beach Boys on my radio show.....THESE GUY's ARE FANTASTIC!!!!
FANTASTIC!!! I was a multi instrumentalist in The Royal Navy Band UK, a retired cop in The Met Police, London. I turned professional entertainer after leaving the police, due to injuries. I recorded over 8 albums, and 3 double albums, I had OVER FIFTEEN MILLION LISTENERS TO MY RADIO SHOW!!!!
In the mid '70's, my father was doing a small concert. (He would play his 12 string, and sing along to it.) I didn't go. Instead, I used the family Dodge Maxivan, and took 3 very cute girls, to a Papa Doo Run Run concert. GREAT concert, in Sunnyvale. Yes, they did the Beach Boys version of Sloop John B. (Dad did the Kingston Trio version, that night.) That night, I saw a box, with things spinning around in it. First time I saw Don Leslie's greatest invention. Brian Wilson said he had one, but I've not found videos of that. If you must know, no I didn't. Get lucky. With these girls, I was not even going to press that issue. steve
Excellent cover !! Hi Guys ! just stumbled on your web site and I cant get over your sound ! I have seen the Beach Boys hear in Boston and Cape Cod back in the mid 70's. They had all the original members plus a brass section ! You actually sound better even without the brass. I play trombone and wish I could have been up there on stage with them !! Keep up the 60's sound and let me know if you ever come to Boston !
I hired Papa Doo Run Run for a reception in Huntington Beach about 15 years ago. Don Zerelli (Kybds) knew I played bass guitar and my 10 minutes of fame came was when he invited me up on stage to play bass for two songs. We did Barbara Ann and Louie Louie. The comment was, "it didn't sound any different." That's what I wanted to hear.
Well, the current Hateful Mikey Beach Boys. Brian, Alan and Matt are still touring. Matt is almost as good as Carl. Very high praise. (Carl was still better.) steve
I know they're good, Jay. If they weren't they wouldn't have been around this long. But as a former recording engineer, I'd have to say that unless they did this 'live' recording multi-track with multiple mic'ing and pro gear, it just sounds a bit too polished for a typical live recording. I won't dispute that it's not live tracking and singing, but the studio-dubbed additional backround vocals are very obvious to the trained ear.@@guitargod6997
@@chuckkirkpatrick6712 Chuck, I can't say that you are wrong, as I was not there for the recording of this tune. On the other hand I am a pretty decent musician, and I can see that the instrumental parts appear in sync with the visuals, such as the guitar stabs on the second song and cymbal hits. My friend is a hell of a drummer and once had a great high tenor voice. So who knows - they may have "sweetened' the background vocals.
@@chuckkirkpatrick6712 I was there. The Boardwalk has (and had at the time this was made) an amazing sound crew. So yes, multi-track, multiple mic'ing and pro gear. Not sure who did the video, but multiple cameras, pro grade from what I can remember. Are there :studio-dubbed audio background vocals?" I'll bow to your expertise. However, the overall sound is totally what I remember hearing...not just that year, but the many years I heard them perform there (they are local favorites and have played that concert series each year from the early years thru last summer.

What an outstanding recording….sounds like a studio session. Great performance. 6-12-2024 today. All is good when I hear the SoCal surf music.
One of the best live covers of Don't Worry Baby I have ever heard. Very precise.

there I am best tribute ever Why we were la too
Nice studio recording. Kinda bugs me when groups do this......sync a studio recording to their live videos. Wonder what they really sound like live...
This is live, Chuck. I know the drummer for forty plus years. Guys can play.
