  • “How lucky are we?” legendary Maui shaper, Matt Kinoshita, rhetorically asked Surfline in 2011. “We have three waves that are known worldwide: Maalaea, Honolua Bay and Jaws, so our kids can make a name for themselves any way they want and pick their avenue to perform: Peahi for big waves; Lahaina Harbor and the Breakwall for tricks; open-faced waves on the Puamana side; rubbish in Hana… Everyone has their own different ocean program, so they’ve all made names for themselves doing unique things. That’s what Maui has to offer: beachbreaks and Jaws and everything in between. There are certain spots where old-timers rule, certain spots that are crowded no matter what, but if you’re willing to drive around for a half-hour you’ll find somewhere that’s empty.”

Surfed EVERY major south swell (and even the monster north swells that wrapped the island) since around 2002. Most fun wave when it firing and reeling down the line. Regarded as the 'fastest wave in the world', Freight Trains holds some of my most cherished memories, along with some skin from my back and feet.
Also grew up surfing the Bay every winter. Never forget the time me and my two friends went out at 4am to catch the first waves 😳 will never forget seeing those double-overhead black walls coming off the horizon... Maui no ka oi bra, so thankful to call that place home 🤙

My favorite spot is right between grammas beach and thousand peaks, when it breaks it’s an overhead A frame, you should check it out on the next big SW swell

Joy to the waves, the surfers have come .. I just imagine how stoked these kids must be, true freedom & creativity to express .. awesome morning meditation. Some serious skill & thrill. Pretty sure that's where the old school line of something being 'totally tubular' derives! Ha! That was a rad video.

Love the production, a little heavy on the slo mo though.

The good surfers are of course epic! And those learning are also epic, because they have to go through all the bad breaks before they get there. But actually, my favourite thing is the water. Constantly changing, and the waves, constantly beautiful!!!!!!! 😍😍😍😍😍😍

Truly the best i have seen in a long while. Great photography and editing catching the best in slomo. the music was appropriate not distracting from the surfing. I don't know who the surfers were, but you honored them well.

The show off skate ramp antics just detract from the beauty of surfing. No one is doing 'airs' on the best Maui waves i.e. The Bay, Maalaea Harbor, & The Monster Reef.

This makes Maui look relatively uncrowded, with perfect waves. It does get good once in a while, and then you get to surf with 3-400 of your best friends. Then there’s the wind…..
