Was the ATTE Better than the AT-AT?

  • The All Terrain Tactical Enforcer was smaller, less heavily armed and armored than the All Terrain Armored Transport, but does that necessarily make it a weaker platform?

    The AT-TE was less powerful than the AT-AT, but it was better employed and more effective for actual combat. The massive height of the AT-AT makes it a huge target, yes it's got durability out the wazoo but as we've seen, starfighter support is more than enough to decimate them.
    If I was Palpatine, I'd have just revised the AT-TE design, maybe upscale it a touch, and either armor up or entirely conceal the cockpit within the tank itself.

    • @Spartan086

      I slightly disagree with the second paragraph, as the main purpose of over-designing every aspect of the Empire was the Tarkin Doctrine, the point of which was to put fear in the people, and a massive AT-AT definitely did that, whereas an AT-TE does not (smaller, less heavily armed)

    • @captnwinkle
      @captnwinkle 2 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      AT-TE would also be decimated by air support, just like any tank in real life. But without it, an AT AT would crush you

    • @benjaminfitzgibbon4506
      @benjaminfitzgibbon4506 2 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      The one that got decimated by air support in the video was the AT ACT, the less armoured cousin of the AT AT that was not even meant for battle. I would say the actual Walker would be able to at least not be decimated by air support due to its near-impenetrable armour and how the weak points (neck and underbelly) would be difficult for a strafing starfighter to hit. And the cannons of the snow speeders had absolutely no effect on the AT AT, they might not be starfighters but they still have some big guns.

    • @HideyoshiKinoshita84
      @HideyoshiKinoshita84 2 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      "starfighter support is enough to decimate them"
      What? From what was seen of the snow speeders, air fighter guns do nothing to AT-ATs. They also no-selled every heavy gun emplacement from the rebel side. They also shot down quite a few of said air fighters.
      The snow speeders eventually brought down ATAts due to the convenient tow cables, which is not something you would see on starfighters. So it's doubtful just having starfighter support is enough to decimate them, especially when the Empire won at Hoth battlefield wise, the best the rebels could do was slow them down as much while people escaped.
      The one blown up in Rogue One was not an ATAT, that was the cargo/support variant that the Empire rapidly deployed into battle as a panic resort to unknown rebel forces.

    AT-AT was perfect for what the Empire needed it for. Remember that the Empire doesn't use anything for war. It's military is instead geared towards the use of fear and numbers to keep the populace suppressed. The AT-AT isn't anything more than what it needed to be. A raised platform to instill fear on anything it approaches. It's firepower faced forward because that's the only direction a formation of these behemoths would be travelling. It didn't matter if it was outperformed by the AT-TE. It didn't matter if it was weak to starfighters (remember most opponents would not have those kind of resources to fight the empire). The rebels were outliers and the Imperial military was never designed to match them.

After all if you win 100 battles but lose 1000 soldiers, and hundreds of millions worth of equipment in every one, whilst your citizens live in fear and grow to hate you for your brutality and oppressive conduct causing you to lose home support, you still fucking lose the war. I suppose one of the advantages the AT-AT has in relation to ground assault, is that by virtue of its height, it has a higher firing position, so can fire down at targets.
    Two targets at ground level firing at each other will either hit, or miss. In the event of a miss, the bolt will go past the target into the distance.
    With the AT-AT, if it misses the target there's a good chance of that shot hitting the ground near it with explosive force, and perhaps causing secondary kills.

    The AT-TE isn't just an armored fighting vehicle, it's a full-on frontline battle tank with infantry capacity. It's basically an AT-AP with infantry. It's like if you combined an MTT and an AAT. The MTT is an armored fighting vehicle. The AT-TE is powerful enough to be its own tank. It's the best of both worlds. The GAR also had stronger vehicles like the SPHA and HAVw-A6 Juggernaut, but they were significantly larger and more expensive. The AT-TE deployed much faster and could traverse more terrain. It could provide light artillery, too.

The at-at has more heavy weapons good at destroying other vehicles which the Separatist had a lot of. Also because the separatist grouped a lot of battle droids in a small area the at-at heavy weapons that provided a explodes a good area at-at would be good at wiping large amount of battle droids at a time and most of the battlefield‘s are flat terrain with not a lot of cover while during the time of empire most of the battlefields were heavy train through jungles where the AT-te would be better

    But I think these two design would actually really compliment each other, the AT-TE is faster, more flexible and capable of operating in a variety of environments.
    The AT-AT on the other hand has heavier weapons, heavier armor and it's weapons are raised on a very high platform making the AT-AT a suitable mobile observation and long range support platform. It would probably also have an easy time serving as a mobile command post, coordinating ground forces and artillery.

    The AT-AT usually carried several speeder bikes and could be modified to carry an AT-ST.
    Though the legs and underbelly are it's weak points, good luck doing anything with that. At Hoth we see entrenched rebel infantry with numerous heavy weapon systems spend the entire battle targeting the legs and fail to even slow them down. Unless your name is Luke Skywalker (or somebody else with main character powers) you're very unlikely to cause any damage.
    In short it depends what sort of vehicle you want, if you want something to transport infantry to the front lines and hang around to shoot at heavier targets the AT-ET is better.
    If you want something that crushes through enemy lines before disembarking an infantry force to mop up whats left than the AT-AT is better.

But you can fit a clone platoon inside a atte. And if the usual battle order is 1 atte per platoon, why are you landing troops separately when they could fit in the atte to begin with. Actually it almost seems like you could fit more clones in an atte carried by a gun ship than in the troop carrying gunship. In the show there looks like closer to 2 squads around 20 clones than a full platoon around 30 in the gunships.

    AT-TE were not as powerful as the AT-AT, however that does not take away from their functionality. It was a vehicle made for an army. That means you could employ a lot of them in a short period of time, creating multiple points of attack. Meanwhile it would take significant resources to employ the AT-AT in battle. More than likely, they would only come in one direction. It was a show piece while the AT-TE was a rugged work mule.

  • @PiotrBarcz
    @PiotrBarcz ปีที่แล้ว

    The AT-AT and AT-TE were VERY different vehicles meant for very different assault methods. It is true that land mines were a huge issue, you showed a clip of AT-TEs turning into airplanes for a second as they were blown up by ground explosives. An AT-AT I suspect has much more armor on the foot pad of each leg making that able to take a blast without blowing the whole fuselage of the walker apart. The armor is an obvious big difference, the AT-AT being able to take a direct shot from a missile (the things used on that planet with the shield, what the hell was it called, can't remember, in any case, those weren't AT-ATs, they had the big open cavity in the middle for holding god knows what, that's a huge vulnerability point making a fighter shooting the right spot able to collapse the whole walker).
    AT-TEs could be used with the magnetic clamps on the feet to walk on space vessels and mount assaults that way, that's something AT-ATs would probably struggle with as they need more flat terrain to operate without falling over whereas the AT-TE could walk over just about any turret, airlock, module or other obstacle with ease.
    Just some things to consider but I don't think either walker is better or worse.

    I think the AT-AT wins out in terms of armour protection and fire rate (in terms of the heavy guns, not the light turrets though), but as a vehicle with the ability to serve in many varied environments, I feel that the AT-TE is a better all-round choice. In order to get that higher rate of fire the AT-AT sacrefices its anti-infantry capabilities almost entirely and its heignt made it vulnerable to trip hazards. Again, the decision of what to equip the military with seems to be more about image than function. The AT-ST makes more sense in a lot of situations because it was all-round faster to deploy, lighter and needed a smaller crew. Rather than the AT-AT which is slow, and heavy leading to deployment issues, it would have made a lot more sense in most cases to upgrade the AT-ST design to include a shield generator.

They didn’t have the numbers, so all they needed was to outsmart the Empire, not outgun them. The AT-TE wouldn’t be able to take out the Rebels on Hoth, the Rebellion would’ve wiped it out in an instant. The separatists would’ve just fired cannon shots at it until it exploded, whereas the Rebels would find the AT-TE’s weak points, exploit the FUCK out of it, and repeat. It’s a different enemy, thus they needed different machines.

    I am not disagreeing with Alan's conclusions at all but I have always called the tech advancement of Star Wars for it's inconsistency over time. The Old Republic tech was reliable enough that they were still using things like the Hammerhead cruisers thousands of years after they were developed, like the battle of Scarif. Based on the fact that we see portable shields and stealth generators it seems like Star Wars tech levels fluctuate from time to time as it is. I don't argue that the armor and guns on the AT-AT were more powerful but I think that its simply because it's bigger so it can carry more armor and a more powerful reactor. Every time I see the AT-AT verses the AT-TE fight I can't help but think that the fight would have been less one sided if the AT-TE had been new. The fight we see is an AT-AT with all of the resources of the empire behind it, new parts, new ammo, fully stocked mechanics bays, against an AT-TE that is 10-15 years old, fixed with whatever junk the clones can get their hands on, probably old and/or mismatched ammo, scrapped together fuel supply, etc. I have no doubt that the clone mechanics are competent but there's only so much that can be done with junk to repair a military vehicle. I know that they are two different purpose built walkers but I'm pretty sure an old WWII battleship could pose a serious threat to a new destroyer if properly maintained and equipped.
    TL:DR I think that the AT-TE would be more competitive against the AT-AT if it was new and had access to government resources for maintenance and resupply like the AT-AT. Also Star Wars tech curves are bogus.

    The AT-AT was a vehicle meant for the front lines, it's high legs would not only make it capable of easily passing through debri and small barriers made my enemy artillery but also difficult to be boarded by the energy due to its sheer height. This combined with it's heavy armor would turn it into a difficult walker to take down.
    The AT-TE however was far more versatile, while not as heavily armoured it's 6 legged structure made it far more stable, making it capable of traversing trough difficult terrain and even walk on walls, this paired with its massive cannon on the back made it no only an excellent troop transport but a capable besiege vehicle and long range mobile artillery

    AT TE was actually a better vehicle for crew survivability, The point of a IFV is not to be a indestructible thing, the goal of IFV is to tank the incoming round for the crew and troopers inside it and allow the troops to survive, which in many cases the ATTE proved him self it has done a good job to protect the crew and troops inside( except the gunners outside).
    But the AT AT I believe they fail to do such things, simply one thing is the height of the AT AT. The AT AT is 7 stories tall walker, once the walker was strike by something causing them to fail, the crew inside will experience a 7 floor drop in a metal box, just like you are trap in a falling elevator, which i think it is the most deadly thing causing the troops life, but in other hand AT TE won’t suffer such hazards because it is much closer to the ground.

    I just realized Jedi wouldn’t like the Imperial military given how slow, bulky, and unadaptable it was. The Republic military is smaller, faster, and can better adapt. I mean, don’t Jedi Starfighters integrate a little too well with Republic Starfighters, but are more different compared to Tie Fighters? Though Jedi starfighters also lack their own hyperdrives, but they have those hyper rings and they also have astromechs. To be fair to the Imperial military, it eliminates several issues with the Republic military like armor and firepower, but it just creates its own issues.

    The AT-TE was a more specialised vehicle better suited for the role of ‘tank’ in my opinion, it had less obvious weaknesses that the towering AT-AT had, as per seen, many, many times in the star wars franchise.
    Just out of preference the AT-TE is a better vehicle in my opinion

    If a AT-TE is a Swiss army knife an AT-AT is a hatchet
    Edit: your being to harsh on the AT-AT the problem isn’t the walker it’s the implementation an AT-AT can’t stand alone it’s a front assault vehicle it therefore needs support like any frontal assault sure it’s vulnerable to infantry but couple it with a suitable amount of AT-STs and make sure you have fighters in the air (which you need to have anyway otherwise your f’ed) the battle of Hoth is an example where everything was stacked against the empire except for their base military Might: they had no fighters because of the planetary shield, they were attacking a highly motivated and heavily dug in opponent that had the capability to easily eliminate the AT-AT’s support vehicles and they still won the day only losing two AT-ATs
    Tldr: the at-at was crippled by implementation and circumstance not design though deciding it needed to carry troops was unnecessary.

    The AT-TE was much better without a doubt. You always want your AFVs to have an as low profile as possible, increasing survival (lower chances to be hit) lower chances to be spotted, and the ability to use cover in a hill down position. The AT-TE also was more stable, and could handle much more terrain. It was transported easier, and could fight in space and on vertical surfaces. It’s main cannon being mounted on top gives it a 360 degree FOV, and allows it to fight hull down without exposing any of its chassis except for its roof and main gun. It was also better defended then the AT-AT, with anti infantry cannons mounted at all angles. It also worked better as a mobile FOB, as it had more storage space inside and again, was smaller and easier to move. It was also safer and easier for its mounted infantry to dismount quickly and safer in combat, unlike the AT-AT which had to have its troops repel in the open. It was cheaper, more effective, better as a transport, heavy battle tank, mobile fob, and better armament.

      @@VictoryFireStudios and what good does any of that armor do if it can only operate in very specific circumstances? Oh boy it can take a few extra shots, maybe. Perhaps. Combat doesn’t work on hit points and stuff ya know? A stray shot from something powerful enough hits the underbelly or the knee join? That AT-AT is coming down. And an AT-AT taking catastrophic damage is going to always result in the entire crew and compliment of mounted infantry dying. An experienced crew/soldiers are always worth more then the AFV. When a AT-TE gets a leg taken out, it can keep walking. And when it gives out, it doesn’t turn everyone inside into mush. Not to mention, all it takes is a single fire team of sneaky enough rebel saboteurs, a few good heavy armed hover tanks (like AATs) in a flank or ambush position, and the AT-AT is going to we a huge waste of resources unless it’s accompanied by enough escort forces. Which, is expected. Never send armor alone. But I digress, fantastic as a firing platform, or siege vehicle? Yea. Is it better in the job then the AT-TE? Probs not all things regarded. Don’t forget the amount of infrastructure and logistics gonna be needed to deploy a single AT-AT and it’s compliment of escorting forces...

    I have come to realize there is not a damn thing the Galactic Empire does that tactically makes sense. A planet destroyer not only eliminates resources for your empire, it is the best recruiting tool for an insurgentcy. At-At’s are so obviously flawed it needs no explanation. Stormtroopers have armor that doesn’t protect them and also conceals their identity from their own officers. As much as I love this channel it’s almost silly to seriously analyze the Empire from a tactical standpoint. I think that George Lucas never meant to create bad guy that made sense in any meaningful way, but rather is an artistic representation of a fascist, arrogant, imposing and evil beurocracy

    No. No, it is not. One rocket to the cockpit and the AT-TE is down. To take down an AT-AT, you'd need to perform a complex maneuver that can get you killed, and it becomes impossible when the AT-ATs march side-by-side in groups of two so that when you try to lasso one, you slam into the legs of the other. Not to mention that a full-power blast from an AT-AT is as powerful as a tactical nuke, as we saw during the Battle for Hoth when Veers fired a full-power blast on the shield generator.

    I think if the Empire thought logically they would use them in tandem in a pseudo counter insurgency mechanized force. Having them operate in 6-8 units at a time, having 1-2 AT-ATs with, 3-4 AT-TEs and then supported by a much faster vehicle make up the rest to chase down runners. The ATs being huge armored distractions while the TEs full of clones/Stromies clear buildings or fortifications.
    Furthermore, potentially in the battle of Hoth, using ATs to help accurately direct TEs long range indirect fire against rebel positions or hangers. Maybe could have actually destroyed the shield generator without wasting time.
