Summary: 1. Cut a couple of db or more of frequencies between 200-500 2. Multiband compress between 200-500 3. Don't be afraid to use a strong cut, some of the sounds need that 4. Use OTT (remember to tweak "time" knob for dynamics) Hope that cleans your mixes!
So its been a few months watching your videos and I must say, you have given me some clarity to quite a few things in this brief time-frame. So, thank you!
Dude, you just lowered the fundamental frequencies for that sound, and pulled up the noise on high end, if you compensate the volume, you will understand that nothing has changed. :) you could just change the frequency balance towards high frequencies using the tilt curve.
omg thank u! since organization is key to solid work flow, do u think you'd ever make a video showing how you organize your plugins and samples within Ableton? and any other organization tips?
I have problems hearing muddy freqs with my AKG K701 headphones. The K701 has not powerful below 1kHz and especially under 100Hz so I cannot check this area correctly. I'm searching for a new pair of headphones for mixing to know muddiness in my projects; any suggestions?
Lol. My problem with mud is that, I ssssuuuck at seeing the bigger picture with mixing. Even with a reference, I’ll adapt to a new mix in 2 seconds, to the point that a professional one will start sounding muddy. And in my songs, if there’s any conflict at all. Even super small conflicts. I’ll fixate on it and eq the soul out of something until, everything is conflicting, yet again but, it sounds worse. I’ve recently realized something thought. This is only the case with leads. Fitting a million chords, arp patches, pads, etc. all fine. But, the second the main element comes in, front and centre. In mono. It’s like I’ve already filled the song in. So I end up boosting like 250hz, and cutting it from the other elements, resulting in a reallly…I dunno. Separated sounding mix. Like, every element is clear. But, not playing together, if you know what I mean. Only to glue compress it together in a bus and call it a day. Now, a lot of this comes now to what I define as mud. I am aware that allll mixing is relative. There’s only mud if it’s loud relative to everything else. But, as I said, I get used to a mix so fast, I end up second guessing myself. This comes in my saving grace. The -4.5db per octave rule. This shit slaaaaps. I learned it from au5. Basically, take a noise that follows this rule. (For the fl heads here, I noticed that half of the flex synth-wave instruments are just kind of eq’d this way out of the box….though, getting a noise sample is preferred) Thaaan, slap it in some random mixer track and put a frequency analyzer on the master. Whenever you are lost, un mute the reference and compare the frequency chart to your track. It goes from “I have nooo idea what’s going on” to “oh. Low mids are lacking. My lead is also quiet. I guess I have room to boost my lead there” so much easier.
Yeaaah. Still a problem. Though, I now sort of know why. This mainly boils down to sound selection and my vision for the song. I generally write shit as I go along. This leads me to have mud. Cuz I don’t actually have a clear final goal in mind. Therefor, if Ive came to a weak idea, my solution is usually to just add more and more shit to it. I learned this when I finished a song recently. It sounds like a fluke. I don’t even consider it something I made. It’s borderline professional sounding. What it has is a clearly thought out sonic space. It is almost like I knew what I was doing for a period of time. The song itself did take me like 100 hours, at least. But, there was rarely an hour spent in the “I dunno” zone. It was pure flow. The song itself is like hella complex too. It’s got au5 style basses. A colour bass drop. Some elements of seven lions. The verses are clean and pure ear candy….I’m proud of it, yet completely detached from it. Flash forwards to a new track I’m working on where it is just…mud. I’m the type of dude to try and brute force my way through writers block. I deadass spent like 8 hours coming up with a bass line. For some reason I wanted the song to be…perfect. But I didn’t know what tf I wanted it to sound like. Now, 40 hours deep and I’m actually happy with the song. But the mix and everything else sounds like ass. And I know exactly why. Which is kinda hype. Cuz, now I’m probably gonna redo the whole thing, and just use the midi and some samples from it to actually make it how I now envision it sounding. And this. This is the best way to avoid mud. Have a vision. And don’t be opposed to redoing everything if that vision comes about hella late. Cuz, mud can come from bad mixing. But, if you find it to be impossible to cut out. If shit looses presence in the mix due to it being cut out. That’s usually a sign that there are too many weak layers happening.
awesome job as always this shit is useful af.I really hope that u can make a future bass artist series which u try to follow their style and maybe try to breakdown what makes the artist unique.
But you are cuting the fundamentals and the harmonics of the instrument. ONLY do that if is necessary for the mixing process, to make the music sound balanced. Stay blessed
English is weird. We "take" steps. Same with naps, leaps, hikes, and strolls, but not runs. . . I don't know why English uses "take" so much. Using "do" would probably make more sense, and it is pretty clear what foreign language speakers mean when they use "do" (even when it isn't exactly correct).

I'm not a producer but I do find this to be a huge problem when trying to mix genres like footwork
