Acorn woodpeckers love to collect acorns and “tattoo” them into the holes they create in trees. Placing these acorns into trees helps this food last throughout the winter. But acorn woodpeckers aren't the only ones who love acorns, so they need to carefully watch their stash.

This video depicts the peckers just doing their thing and pecking trees. How charming. However on my rural property year after year they have constantly pecked into the cement siding of my house and shop buildings and have caused thousands of dollars in damage! I get the siding repaired and repainted and then they just return and destroy the repairs.

I wonder if there is a coating you could use that they wouldn’t like? Gardeners put capsaicin on plants, for example, but I know birds have bad senses of smell so that in particular wouldn’t work. A friend of mine has wood and aluminum siding and they kept either damaging it or banging the metal, but one day they randomly stopped.
