Awesome results Don! My Buddy who lives in the country outside of Oshawa was so happy to install his and say goodbye to Bell for good. This system brings endless possibilities to those who live or camp in areas that would otherwise be ‘cutoff’ from the world...so to speak. Thanks for giving us a look at the system brother!
Thanks, Doug! Yes, it is an amazing solution, and I'm sure the issues that exist today will be ironed out in a short time. The system is still billed as beta.
Very interesting Don! Where I live out in the country (west of San Antonio, Texas), I had to put up with the initial speeds you were getting, using a wireless system. Uploading anything to TH-cam was SLOOOOW. Then one day my rural electricity provider decided that they would begin installing fiber to any customers who wanted it. My area was one of the first to have fiber installed, and I was number 6 on the installation list. WOW! What a difference. My speeds are the same both up and down (around 145 Megabits per second). I had uploaded about a 10 minute video the week before I got the fiber, and it took 6 hours and 36 minutes to upload. For a test, I renamed the video and uploaded it on my fiber. It took 2 minutes and 10 seconds for the upload. The cost is $79.99 per month, BUT entirely worth it, as I now upload almost everything in 4K to TH-cam. My Fiber router has WiFi, but also has 4 network ports and a 2 telephone jacks on the back. My home was previously wired with a Cisco router, so it was simple to plug my Cisco router into one of the jacks, and I was up and running. On another note - I have had an AT&T land line telephone for over 14 years out here. Last year I started having a lot of trouble with my telephone, and AT&T was totally unable to keep my telephone working, so I switched to VOIP telephone over the fiber. My telephone bill dropped from around $58.00 per month with AT&T for a basic line (no extras like caller ID or call waiting) to $17.95 per month with ALL options, (caller ID, call waiting, free long distance, and even voice messaging). I couldn't be happier. The ONLY problem I have ever had with the fiber is once after a thunderstorm, I had to unplug the fiber modem, and re-boot it. Fixed.
Wow, that's an amazing speed, Dean! Where we are, it is very unlikely any land-based system would ever be extended, and fixed-wireless options are not living up to their promises either. This is just an amazing solution.
Thanks, Mike! I'm really enjoying Starlink so far. The little outages are a bit annoying (for example, multiple 'blinks' during work calls this morning), but light is at the end of the tunnel with more and more satellites being positioned. I'd hate to start chainsawing down trees!
@@GiddieUp20 Same I have been waiting nearly 7 months and have recieved no update or response. But have been charged. So totally confused. Wished i had a way to talk to customer service.
@@DonJoyce do you have an email for starlink customer service. Trying to reach out to them as others have said they have recieved updates but i have not. Been waiting for nearly 7 months.
"Moving back home to Marlbank"....great lyrics for a song! Love, romance, and mystery...with a hint of danger! Yes, all this awaits you with your first Starlink download!!!!
Just took ours up to our place near Baysville, ON this past weekend. Got speeds up to 200 mbps but it also had gaps due to blockages, lack of satellites and beta. Looking to mount a 10-foot galvanized pole on an old Bell satellite J-mount, same as you, to get above some trees. Once it adjusted itself, ours locked in heading due north at 68 degrees (22 degrees less than vertical).
Hi Don, hope you are fine. First of all thank you so much for such an amazing review of what you needed to do to install Starlink at home. Very thankful to you, now, I am really considering to buy Starlink even if it's not cheap cause here Mexico City we have many ISP's which are not really good in terms of consistently give you the speeds you want, almost every ISP tells you as a customer that they promise you up to 80% of speeds (e.g. 8MB/S download speed from a 10MB/s offer). The main advantage I have at my home is that I have free sky to dish location. Kinds regards and I would like to visit Ontario next year.
Thanks your video was very informative. We're x-Comcast customers, we were getting very close to 1,000 Mbps download and about 20 Mbps upload. Then we moved and were only getting about, 9 Mbps then the Internet went out completely (Kinetic by Windstream) now we're getting about what you were getting with your original Internet connection 1-3Mbps download. We're seriously considering the Starlink system but it on the pricey side. Being on S.S.I. $600+dollars is a little more that we're looking to spend however if we're can have faster speeds I think we're going to go for it.
Note that my video is quite old now, and the dish installation options are different. That said, I am still loving Starlink's speed in my rural location.
@@DonJoyce Yes sir, I'm finding that out now but still it pointed me in the correct direction for sure. I'm not sure if their even selling the one that is self actuated any longer. 😛
Looks like you're close to us Don. Were on Bobs Lake, with starlink, working though the same issues with trees and obstacles creating outages and downtime. Thanks for the video.
Thanks for the video. After months of waiting, My Starlink was just processed for shipping. I just ordered the pipe adapter so I can reuse my OLD Hughesnet or Directv Posts still attached on the roof. I really don't want to punch anymore holes on the roof.
Thanks for watching. Hope you picked up a few tips, or at least some things to think about as you are installing your dish. Yeah, you don't want more holes in your roof!
@@DonJoyce Personally for me since i play PC games, I pick servers that most games are hosted from. You have close to you new york, ny ; chicago, IL ; and you could do montreal, CA. I never do a speed test location in my state because I know, no game is hosting a server from here. My starlink comes in 2 days. I'll post my speed test to newyork, ny (spectrum data center)
Wow, very descriptive install! I honestly can't believe your Starlink Dish arm fit inside your Expressvu arm? Mine when I tried was the exact same (well a mm off) of each other and basically would need to either arc weld them or chamfer one end to slide into the other. I had to use the pipe adapter kit. Also lol on the water drip animations! I'm guessing there's going to be so many users suffering the drops due to canopy cover around their homes or especially camps.
Thanks, Roger! Yes, after our exchange a few weeks back, I was very surprised when it just slipped inside. In fact, it probably had 3mm of 'slop', which is why I squeezed the J-arm down a bit. Frankly, I'm a bit nervous about the set-up (those buttons don't stick through the holes all that much!), so will likely rework it with the pipe adaptor if/when it arrives. That said, it has been SUPER windy the last few days, and the dish is rock solid up there... (Glad you liked my dripping tap!)
Great video, great voice and I love the Canadian flag. I'm having a really hard time getting an unobstructed view of the sky at my cottage with my starlink. It needs a really wide view unlike conventional satellite technology. Likely I will ultimately need about 400 ft of cable to the dish instead of the 100 that it comes with.
Thanks, Jack!! I'm getting so many 'blips', it is basically unusable for work calls (and I do mostly audio / screen sharing things as my day job...). Super for downloading and uploading. I'm not certain my problem is the tiny bit of obstruction I'm getting or not. Regarding a longer distance to the dish, you may want to look into this kind of device: th-cam.com/video/FjMQBi5Zixk/w-d-xo.html
@@DonJoyce thanks I will check it out. As for the blips, as you probably know star link says that this will improve as the number of satellites increase.
Looking forward to the switch. I regularly have to drive an hour round trip into town to upload client videos. (heading out the door now) A 3.5 gig file takes 4-5 hours to upload at home if it doesn't fail, I can do it the same file in about 6 minutes at the other location. There are no faster alternatives available where I live. Hopefully Starlink will work here.
thanks for your post, " you didn't holler and scream at me" Mine will be here in a week or so, I was wondering about the security cameras. and the static IP addresses. But I think I can work around that. NOT sure right now. I'm cutting cost. My internet is 78.00 a month and my Dish network is a little over 100.00, after we get starlink I will cancel my dish network, " we can stream then" so it looks like I will have faster speeds and lower cost. Thanks again
Thanks! I simply upgraded to Blink security cameras...super easy. I publish monthly updates BTW, and here's the one where I describe the solutions. th-cam.com/video/bQCCN610tXE/w-d-xo.html
Wow Don, considering those BELL internet speeds I’m not surprised you needed something better. I’ve been so accustomed to fast internet for the past 20 years here in the Calgary area,I sort of forgot that most of Canada doesn’t have the option. (Which is a weird thought in 2021!!) STARLINK is for sure a game changer,I actually spotted the craft dropping its satellites (maybe last week...🤔 or 2 ago?) it was visible before sunrise with binos. Now all we gotta do is wait for the machines to take over. 😬
Thanks, Derek! I'll have to have a look for the Starlink constellation! BTW, to be fair to Bell, our place is a full kilometer past the recommended maximum distance for the DSL box we're attached to, so it's a miracle we get any drips out of the wire!
Hi Don. Just signed up for Starlink but you mentioned you cannot access your security cameras? The whole reason I need faster service is I just installed security cameras by Vivant. I can view them on my phone app. Have you found any workaround yet rather than keeping your old service?
Just got ours yesterday. The new rectangular dish. Moderately pissed that there's no ethernet connection on the modem, but that's solvable. Like the fact that the modem operating parameters are way better, so I will be putting it on a covered deck. It will get some humidity but the rating makes it moisture resistant.
You mentioned location B was more clear and further away from the trees. Were these trees still a bit of a factor for you? I have been using the app to view obstructions and found a spot that is clearer and further away from some trees than my original 'easier spot' (like your scenario) but I can still see a small portion of the tree tops in the app obstruction "circle". Considering its March and no leaves the view won't get any better and I'm hoping that won't be an issue. I might have to tune up the Stihl I've read that once more satellites are in the sky the dish will be point more straight up which will probably be better for most rural users.
Yes, we are in similar situations, I think. Even my current Location B is experiencing 'obstruction' outages (about 12 per hour....I'm on a Teams call right now and it 'blinks out' for a second or so every 5-10 minutes. Driving me nuts). In my case, my interfering trees are evergreen, so I'm hoping things don't get worse with leaves. And yes, more satellites more overhead SHOULD help. Otherwise, yeah Mr. Stihl may get a workout...but I sure hope not!
hopefully my dish shows up next month like my account says, I've been following starlink for years now i pre ordered within minutes of it being available and i cant wait to actually use it! it will also be nice to ditch my 500kbps download 1000ms ping Xplornet satellite. i guess us Canadians are getting the rectangle dishes now they are no longer shipping the round ones here
Cool! Glad to hear your dish is arriving soon, Tyler. Hard to say if you'll get a round or square. I friend of mine received theirs last week and it was round...but yes, I heard they were starting to ship square ones in Canada now. Yeah...0.5 Mb/s down...that's a bit slooooow!
for ppl who using your own router , it's superior comparing to Starlink's router but you still need Starlink router when there are some hiccup or for trobleshooting and self-fixing dishy. So better keep it when it need.
Great video! Thanks, I also have Bell and will keep it as a backup because my Starlink keeps losing its connection and I am constantly on video calls. When it works, it works well, but when it's raining,, I have to switch to Bell. Too bad. I really hope it improves.
Thanks for watching and sharing your experience. Odd about the rain...is it possibly making obstructions like tree branches worse? The water itself should have minimal impact.
@@DonJoyce I moved it to the roof and the speed is better, 305 download and 178 upload but storm last night caused that to drop and a total loss of signal. I’m in Canada and I can see that the base is in New York. I’ll just be more patient as the system keeps improving.
Just interested if the service has improved since this video in terms of outages I live in the southern us and I am looking forward to getting starlink when it is available going to do the same install as you I do not think installing on the roof is a smart choice as when the home needs to be reshingled you have to reinstall it buy putting it on the fascia you do not have to worry about that
Oh the Starlink service has improved immensely since those early days! I had been publishing monthly reports on the improvements, but recently stopped because...well...it just works now! Here is a good one to watch: th-cam.com/video/NpzFoxED93M/w-d-xo.html and here is a playlist of all my Starlink-related videos over the years: th-cam.com/play/PLOooCCedWECXrbObJQso9HPKo-hZ7O4QQ.html
I noticed the ping was around 6x on starlink. I would be interested in to find a server that was more central to both connections and see the ping comparisons.
Do you think that StarLink is really only for those who live at a remote address with limited or no internet access? Does it make any sense for people like me who hate the cable company internet service (slow) at high monthly prices?
@@Wanted54321 thanks for the quick reply! Have those speeds increased since you first got it? And service is good? And this is the standard plan not business? thanks 👍
@@joewest1336 would say speed is more or less the same, when Elon decide to help Ukraine the speed did drop a bit but its back to normal now, it is residential plan, we use it out in Kumeu where the only available internet plan was copper line that does 5Mbps or less.
I suspect there is an autocorrrect problem in your comment..."sells hard"? But, no I didn't put any screws into the masts. The Starlink mast has two spring loaded 'buttons' that pop into the 1/2" holes I drilled into the bell mast. The standard tripod stand that comes with the Starlink set-up also has two 1/2" holes for the buttons. These are what hold the Starlink mast in place so a strong wind doesn't pull it out. Two comments though: files these holes smooth so they don't run the risk of eventually sawing through the buttons; and make sure the bell mast is squeezed down in diameter (I used a vice) to ensure a snug fit. Otherwise the buttons don't have enough purchase and they could pop right out. They only stick out about 3/16" (working off of memory....)
We haven't had any snow or rain since installing it, but other videos say there is no difference, and the internal dish heater melts snow off. I'm in Canada at about 45 North, so about the same as you.
I am currently waiting for my Starlink kit to arrive but my neighbor has it. We just went through a big snowstorm and he said there was very little difference in the connection, speed, etc.
Hey I have a question, i have a clear view of the sky on top of my roof but I have tall trees in a 360 view from my house and there's obstructions all over when I test the spot coverage on the starlink app. So I have to run it out to our field which is roughly around 200ish feet from our house so what ethernet cable do you think I should use?
The cord from the dish to the power-brick/PPE box is about 100 feet and is not extendable. The solution in your case would involve getting AC power out to the dish's power brick and protecting it from the elements. If you can do that, then you can run a CAT6 cable from the second port on the brick back to your house. An alternative to running a cable is to use a wireless ethernet bridge like this: th-cam.com/video/FjMQBi5Zixk/w-d-xo.html . You still need power out there, but at least you don't need to also run the ethernet cable.
@@DonJoyce I measured the distance from my house to the spot and it's roughly around 159-160ft. But thank you a lot, I'll look into getting a AC and the other stuff you mentioned.
Hi Thank you for that great video. I will recieve my stuff this week and l had a question. Since we live in Canada and so there is snow (like a lot in my area), l thought installing some heating cord on it so snow and ice would melt down easily. Thoughts?
Thanks, Martin! Installing heating cord on the dish sounds like a poor idea. The dish itself is 'self heating'...either just by virtue of the internal electronics or actively, I'm not sure which. Regardless, snow will melt off the dish on its own. I haven't gone through a full winter yet (I'm between Toronto and Ottawa), but this video shows a light snowfall and the impact on the dish: th-cam.com/video/PFs_JmlacGY/w-d-xo.html
Thanks for the video. I have a lot of trees around my house. About what diameter of clear space do I need? I need to run everything through satellite- no land lines in the remote area. Thanks
The amount of clear space depends a lot on how high you can get, and the obstacles in the direction the dish points (slightly tilted to the north). Your absolute best bet is to download the Starlink app to your phone and use the 'check for obstacles' tool in it to evaluate the spot you are planning to install it. You'll need at least 50 ft diameter of clear space at roof top level.
Thanks, Bob! I'll consider putting out a "Don's cottage network architecture" video, but not sure how much it would help...everyone's requirements/limitations are different it seems.
I got confused on the tail end of your video, I have a lot cameras running on 10MB internet, monitoring the house and compound, you said that will not work on Starlink???
They will work inside your LAN but without port forwarding or VPN, you'll be unable to access them externally. If your system posts the footage to the cloud, you will be ok.
How long did it take your pipe adapter to show up? My starlink showed up last week, and went to install it today to find out my current dish pole on my roof is barely too small to accept the dish, so i decided i'd purchase the pipe adapter to get around this. I can't wait to instal lthis thing.
I got the same estimated timeframe in northern Washington State. Sad thing is, I originally got accepted into the beta test program, but missed the acceptance email until it was expired, and now I'm back on the "some day, hopefully soon" list. Meanwhile my neighbor has it... The jealousy is real.
What is your experience in cold temperatures? I just started researching the system and it's rated for -22F. That's not enough for Manitoba. Ontario can be cold too. Did you experience any temp related issues? TIA
Hi Peter! Sadly, in my excitement, I didn't measure the Starlink pole, but I have a second Expressvu mount and it measures 1 9/16" inside. The Starlink part was fairly loose inside the Expressvu J-pole, so I would say the Starlink is a bit less than 1.5" in outside diameter. Hope that helps!
it s a good idea that you had, I am going to install mine like yours, question, what is the size of the holes that you made? and at what distance from the top of the mast? and was there a big lousse?
Sorry, it's molded to the cable. The choke is why you need a 3/4" hole, and the RJ45 boot is also pretty beefy. I covered them with electrical tape to prevent snagging as it went through the hole into my basement.
@@DonJoyce Thanks so much. What is the diameter and length of the choke? This is very useful information because a hole in the wall is not always enough to reach the router
@@fiorellopossamai The choke is just less than 3/4" in diameter. With tape over it to prevent snagging, it required a 7/8" hole for easy passage. The choke is perhaps 3" long. The cable itself is at least 100-feet. Note that this is a power-over-ethernet cable, carrying about 100W of power...so I would not recommend attempting to extend it.
Thanks for the video! Question: could you post a picture or video of the Starlink app's 'Check for Obstructions' view of your "plan A" location? I'm curious to see how much the dish was blocked by trees. One day I hope to be able to get a dish, but I have a partial block of my northern sky, so I want to see how bad yours was to get an idea of what level of a problem I would have. Your original internet makes mine look good: 9 down, 0.6 up - on a good day!
Thanks Christopher! The check for obstructions part of the app never showed me anything. And the similar support web page just said something like 'still working on it'... Do not very helpful. The current location shows zero obstructions, but I still get a dozen or more short obstruction outages per hour. Sometimes they are combined with beta outages, which is suspicious...not sure how they are distinguishing them.
Do you have an estimation of the length of black cable used to run from the POE injector and starlink dish? I just put in my order to be on the wait list. Ideally, I would like to run the black cable through a conduit and up to the existing dish location.
I really wish I had taken the time to measure it...but it was cold and I was wanting to finish before dark. It was about 100 feet. I recommend you check with the various facebook groups. I'm sure someone must have measured it!
Bonjour! Assuming you have (or are getting) a second generation square dish (mine is a first generation round dish), then you need to purchase an ethernet adaptor from the Starlink Store. This will provide you with an ethernet port, You can attach your TV's internet cable into that, or use an ethernet switch to provide you several ethernet ports.
Sure you can! But you need to use techniques and equipment that do not require admin access to the router. I am currently running with all of that: cameras, thermostat, doorbell.... Here's a later video that explains: th-cam.com/video/bQCCN610tXE/w-d-xo.html
hello ... do you know what would happen if I am using starlik in my house this month and I move to another house in the same province in a couple of months? would pick up the signal?
From what I have read, the current beta starlink systems are somehow locked into grid locations based upon your order information. I would ask Starlink support before trying it.
Hi, I am preparing for the day my Starlink gets to me. Like you I have an old satellite TV dish mount I want to use. My mount has a 2 inch (5 cm) diameter pole. Is that the same size your mount has? Thanks
Why do so many people who make you tube videos spend so much time showing us how to open a box? If the viewers already do not know how to open the box then they are screwed anyway. It is one thing to show us what was in the box but damn I close it out before the box is even open. I am sure it was a good video after I again learned how to open a box.
LOL. I intended to speed-ramp the actual box opening...just forgot. And hey, it was like 5 seconds. As you said, it is reasonably important to understand what is (and isn't) included, which I do show, again fairly succinctly.
Very awesome bro, great job on installation and well detailed review, if I want to hook up my cctv cam to this would this work ,, and does it pick up free wifi hotspots or your own signal?
Thank you! Regarding CCTV/security cameras, I suggest you watch my video about integrating Starlink into home networks: th-cam.com/video/xXpb1NR4K60/w-d-xo.html I'm not sure what you mean about picking up wifi hotspots....Starlink connects only to satellites, not to other wifi signals....but perhaps I misunderstand your question.
Gary is a regular delivery agent for our area and always friendly. I did briefly speak with him before filming, but this was the actual unrehearsed delivery.
All the specs are on the Starlink.com web site...look under Support. With the round dish, the cable is fixed and 100 ft. With the square dish, the cable is detachable, 75 ft, and extensions can be purchased. Measure carefully.
@@DonJoyce Extensions can't really be purchased, they don't make a connector. They make it really hard to extend past the 150', I can't even connect my 75' to it. Had to splice to an ethernet, a pain in the butt.

Did you do all the research for your regs and other in-depth videos on Bell? If so, kudos to you! Weirdly, ping time isn't related to up and download speed. I've been remote hosting a server for a few years and a while ago read about a home server that uses sockets, I think, rather than port forwarding. Just google "home server without port forwarding," haha, now that you have decent internet speed.
I did the vast majority of my final uploads from home in Ottawa where I have excellent internet service. Thanks for the tip about sockets...I'll look into that potential. Sadly, the Starlink Support FAQ is full of techie questions, such as static ip, where the answer is 'not yet...'.
@@DonJoyce If I remember correctly the server will take care of the static Ip problem. It has a remote that receives a heartbeat from your server and checks the Ip. If changed, It then redirects or notifies your app as to the new IP.
Hi, Don. Thanks for the video. Didn't you find that a satellite J-arm is a little too big for the Starlink mount? Mine was wobbling terribly. I had to sleeve the Starlink pipe to make it snug in the old satellite arm. i have the latest edition dish (rectangular).
I show in the video that the fit was a BIT sloppy, but squeezing the J-mount a bit dealt with it perfectly. I suspect the square dish has a smaller diameter down pipe.
I'm not sure if it is a 'trick', but did you try unplugging it, leaving it off for about 20 seconds, and plugging it back in again? "Thank you for calling the IT Department!" LOL

but it does support vpn right even though its CGNAT? so you could get a router thats support vpn and make a remote access to control your cctv and lan while away?
Obviously the 2.5mb/s I received was very poor, but considering my cottage is beyond the technical specs for the DSLAM box (I know...my company makes them!), it's remarkably good! I am now 100% on StarLink btw.

Hi Murray! You will be notified when you can order, at which point you pay the balance and shipping commences. You'll also receive tracking information so you can stand on your porch with a camera! It took about a month for me from notification (and my immediate purchase :-) ) to receiving the box.

I'm a 73-year-old woman who does not have a phone that will work with the Starlink App. What extra pieces of equipment are needed to install the Starlink? What extra equipment is needed to completely install on the roof?
You WILL need to use the app to set up your network, but perhaps your installer will be able to do that for you. There are a variety of installation kits depending upon your roof and how the cable will be entering your house. I suggest you go to Starlink.com and select from there. You should definitely shop around: that's an incredibly bad speed for an urban area. I would not recommend Starlink though, since you can likely get equivalent or better speeds from a regular internet provider using fiber, with a lower price per month.
Everyone's experience seems to be different. We had put our name on the list in early 2020, but no deposit was required at that time. We were offered the chance to buy in early Feb 2021. We paid in full at that time and received the gear in March.
hello Don, I currently have a TP Link router, can I connect it to Starlink instead of Starlink's router? Is Starlink's router more efficient than my TP LINK? Does Starlink's router have better range? (excuse the automatic translation I speak French)
It's a different antenna, now. Rectangular and the Starlink router has no ethernet aux port anymore. You need to get their ethernet adapter to connect your existing router to it.
Congrats Don, we are on pre-order, were you invited to the beta or pre-order converted to full order? (he asked jealously! lol) Cant wait to ditch Xplornet!
When it's super cold it does not melt off. If you live in an area that gets lots of snow I have found it does not work very good. Some days the snow melts and then in the evening it freezes up causing the motor to lock up and not track.
129 per month is a little steep but in comparison to the 78 per month Bell charges for terrible land line service its a better deal. Cant wait until fall to get it.
Totally agree with your math and logic, Derrick! I like doing reverse logic sometimes: suppose you had 100Mb service and someone offered you 10% of that speed for half the price....would you jump on that magic discount? I don't think so! (well, not if you had serious internet requirements....)
The after speeds are incredible,i was feeling sorry for you with the first numbers (about half of what i get with my internet How much of an decrease in upload time did you notice?(my video uploads of 15-20 minute vids to channel take 5-6 hrs!)
This video is about 1.5 GB and took about 20 minutes to upload. It would have taken overnight or more with my old system. I wouldn't even have tried. I would have either tethered my phone or driven home to Ottawa (2 hours), uploaded, then driven back!

@@thecoconut8207 well it depends upon your country and what extra bits you need. Pricing is on starlink.com
Starlink is an amazing system - this may be an inspiration to 'upgrade'...thanks for sharing the experience.
Thanks, Mike! I'm really enjoying Starlink so far. The little outages are a bit annoying (for example, multiple 'blinks' during work calls this morning), but light is at the end of the tunnel with more and more satellites being positioned. I'd hate to start chainsawing down trees!

Thank you, Josh! Glad you enjoyed!
Cool! Would be interested in seeing how you did your installation. Feel free to send a pic to DonDronesOn@gmail.com
Thanks, Roberto! Glad you found it helpful.
The best part is this is just "BETA" and is going to get even better!!!

Love the faucet next to your speed test.
Ha! Yeah, I found it amusing too!

Thanks, Greg! Can't wait for them to fix the algorithm to basically exclude obstructed parts of the sky.
Thanks for the video. After months of waiting, My Starlink was just processed for shipping. I just ordered the pipe adapter so I can reuse my OLD Hughesnet or Directv Posts still attached on the roof. I really don't want to punch anymore holes on the roof.

This is great Don! Thanks for recording the whole process. Fingers crossed we hear from Starlink soon!
Thanks, Michelle! Let me know how it goes!

9:46 When doing a speed test, pick the same location and server so you get a better result. First one you picked Kingston, second is Ottawa.
Sure, good advice for a better comparison. Even with the same server, the ping and speed varies a LOT from test to test.
They keep improving the network. I have had NO outages within the last 12 hours. 52° in Manitoba.
Sounds great!!! Thanks for watching!
Another great video Don! You’re going to be famous in my neck of the woods. I’m sharing your videos :)
Thanks! And thanks for sharing the video!
Wow, THOSE ARE UNREAL NUMBERS.
thanks. Unreal especially when you consider what it has to do to get the signal!
Yeah...when driving for an hour is faster than uploading from home, you know you're ready for faster internet!
thanks for your post, " you didn't holler and scream at me" Mine will be here in a week or so, I was wondering about the security cameras. and the static IP addresses.
It depends on how you access the cams. This video may help: th-cam.com/video/xXpb1NR4K60/w-d-xo.html
thanks - just got mine and was happy to see the speeds I can expect!
Congratulations!!!! Stay tuned for my monthly updates!
Cool! Thanks for sharing, Larry!
Thanks Don. We’re waiting until mid 2022 for service in our rural area.
I feel very fortunate to have received ours! You'll have yours before you know it!
I might have to tune up the Stihl
I've read that once more satellites are in the sky the dish will be point more straight up which will probably be better for most rural users.
Starlink works fine with your own router, Ubiquiti in particular, or Netgear, etc.
Right, Travis! There are limitations however. I'm going to put out a video detailing this. For many cases, it's not a problem.

I noticed the ping was around 6x on starlink. I would be interested in to find a server that was more central to both connections and see the ping comparisons.
The starlink ping is anywhere from 25 to 50 regardless of the connection server. It varies quite a bit. My Bell ping is usually around 25.
Do you think that StarLink is really only for those who live at a remote address with limited or no internet access? Does it make any sense for people like me who hate the cable company internet service (slow) at high monthly prices?
It certainly offers an alternative, if you have a clear view of the sky!

When it sells hard, you have a problem, I saw that you had put small screws so that the Starlink mast is more stable in the Bell mast
How is it on cloudy days and or rain or snow
I can tell you with experience I live in North Dakota it doesn't work worth a damn when it snows or rains hard.

Hi
Thank you for that great video.
@@DonJoyce Ok l didn't know that. Thank you for your answer!
Very useful review! Thanks
Glad you found it helpful!
Great piece of information pal. Thanks.
Thanks, Jacek!
Pretty darn exciting
It was! And is!!
Great video but can you now do one on you use of the existing and how you set your setting, etc. Thanks

Thanks, Bob! I'll consider putting out a "Don's cottage network architecture" video, but not sure how much it would help...everyone's requirements/limitations are different it seems.
Are on the bell hub over cell? If so, then I know I can look it up. Lol
I'm sorry if this has been asked already, but in what direction is your dish pointing? I know you're at 44.51. I'm at 44.84 (Near Perth, ON) Thanx
No worries, Dan. My dish is pointing almost due North.
They were out of stock at the time...took over a month. Hopefully they are faster now.
We have bell internet like you and we just ordered it for Canada Ontario they say mid 2021 or late
Cool. Enjoy!
TIA
What is the diameter of the starlink pole? What is the pole diameter of the expressvue mount
Thanks! The holes are 0.5 inches, but sorry, I don't recall the distance. I may have just held it, marked the spot and drilled!
Can the choke in the black cable near the rj45 be disassembled for easy passage in the corrugated tube?
Sometimes they are combined with beta outages, which is suspicious...not sure how they are distinguishing them.
have a look into noip for your cameras..that way yu can ditch your cable
Thanks, David. Not quite enough (yes, I use no-ip). I'll put out a more detailed video soon.
In France, we have a box to connect to the Internet and an other box to watch TV. How do you connect TV to the Starlink router and wifi router ?
So you can’t use security camera, Hvac thermostats, and door lock/unlock?
Thanks
Hi there. My expressvu mount is 1 9/16" inside. The starlink rod was a bit loose in there.
You should put some paint on the drilled holes of the mount or it’s going to rust
Thanks...I have a lot of tidying up to do once the weather is warmer.
Very awesome bro, great job on installation and well detailed review, if I want to hook up my cctv cam to this would this work ,,
and does it pick up free wifi hotspots or your own signal?
Did Garry come around after work so you could set that scene up for the camera ? Good old Garry
Gary is a regular delivery agent for our area and always friendly. I did briefly speak with him before filming, but this was the actual unrehearsed delivery.
how long is the included cable? If I the dish on the roof or backyard, will it be enough to run 30-50ft ?
All the specs are on the Starlink.com web site...look under Support. With the round dish, the cable is fixed and 100 ft. With the square dish, the cable is detachable, 75 ft, and extensions can be purchased. Measure carefully.
@@DonJoyce Extensions can't really be purchased, they don't make a connector. They make it really hard to extend past the 150', I can't even connect my 75' to it. Had to splice to an ethernet, a pain in the butt.
@@lounichol5423 Extensions can be purchased from the Starlink shop, for the square dish model only.
I have a phone router, can I connect it to the auxiliary socket of the Starlink router?
If you currently have it connected to a modem of some sort via an ethernet cable, yes, you should be able to plug it in.
@@DonJoyce Ok thank you Don, I am from northern Quebec, I ordered the Starlink kit for 1 month, I can't wait to receive it, how long did it take you to receive it?
@@michelrho6065 It was about a month from the actual order placement to delivery...so it should be coming soon. You will receive a shipping notification and tracking...so you can wait for your "Gary" on the porch!
@@DonJoyce Thanks. I don't know how I missed that in the video.
Satellite dropped last night at 6pm out of no where. Wifi connection is great but won’t let us connect to internet. Any tricks?
I'm not sure if it is a 'trick', but did you try unplugging it, leaving it off for about 20 seconds, and plugging it back in again? "Thank you for calling the IT Department!" LOL
Turn likes on so I can give you a big thumbs up! I'm ditching telus in Northern bc.
You can still hit Like, they just don't show. I have left a trail of very unhappy ground schools due to my free drone training videos. Turning off Like visibility takes some of the thrill away from them. I appreciate your support!
Think about strong wind and thunder lightning at your mounting place..
Of course. First, the old dish had survived many years there. Second, we had a massive wind storm immediately after I installed...and all good.
Nice Don!
Thanks, Kenny!!!
but it does support vpn right even though its CGNAT? so you could get a router thats support vpn and make a remote access to control your cctv and lan while away?

@@DonJoyce ahh yes sorry :)
Where to buy the antenna and what is the price of the satellite internet antenna hours in Romania works if I want to test it
Hi Stoica. Go to Starlink.com for pricing and availability.
$ 100 given on the satellite internet antenna must also be paid a monthly subscription
If you don't understand what I wrote I don't know English I used google translator
Great video! Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it! BTW, I've been doing monthly experience reports, with performance metrics and other cool tidbits. Check them out on my channel!
Mine arrives tue can't wait no great net signal here
Exciting times! Be sure to have a clear sky view.
less then 3mbps from bell you think is good considered its wired?
Obviously the 2.5mb/s I received was very poor, but considering my cottage is beyond the technical specs for the DSLAM box (I know...my company makes them!), it's remarkably good! I am now 100% on StarLink btw.
Don..I put the $129.00 Deposit about a month ago and have not heard anything back yet. I live near cobourg Ontario. What should I expect next ? Will they simply bill my Visa for the $600.00 Kit and ship it or will they notify me it is coming ?
Hi Murray! You will be notified when you can order, at which point you pay the balance and shipping commences. You'll also receive tracking information so you can stand on your porch with a camera! It took about a month for me from notification (and my immediate purchase :-) ) to receiving the box.
@@DonJoyce Thank you very much Don...I am trying to run a National Car Club, a National Event and a website that has dozens of pages...on Internet that has me pulling my hair out..what little I have.
@@RodeoRanger That would be VERY frustrating! Just to make you jealous, I have uploaded 30 work-related videos, each about 500Mb, over the course of the day today. With my land line, it would have taken overnight for ONE...if I was lucky!
Off topic but what camera do you use?! Amazing quality!
Thanks! Most of the video is done with a DJI Osmo Pocket. When I am climbing the ladder, I also have an old GoPro on my head, and a Akaso (similar to a gopro) on the roof, with the Osmo Pocket on the ground. I use a lav mic with a Zoom h1n external recorder for sound...there was a ton of wind!
Stay safe and have a dish or antenna installer do the high work.
@@DonJoyce.The App says that my phone does not have the tools I need. "It requires a camera, Gyroscope, accelerometer, GPS, and high-accuracy compass". Did your phone have all these items? How can I get these tools on my phone?
@@TEXASdaughter Sorry, this sounds like you're using a kitchen wall phone...LOL! You can't get any of those items added to a phone; you really do need a more fully equipped smart phone. Almost anything made in the last 5 years or so would probably be fine. Perhaps a friend or family member can help out...many people have old phones kicking around that they can loan or sell to you. You might even be able to buy one online...just don't pay more than $100 since it sounds like you don't need it otherwise!
Ah heard you halfway through it does default on security cameras then lol and stupid PC cop telling me I cant record public road ir land,
I said no I dont record I just view footage of what images I see and I like to look at the view of the city far ahead, she sort of laughed and left it at that.
excellent review btw 💯
Thanks! I use my cameras for remote monitoring for things like trees coming down, snow coverage, packages left on the porch, and things like that. A huge relief to be able to see all is well after a storm.
@@DonJoyce ah Im with you, you use mainly to check around the house and for packages etc. I only record if a serious incident happens, good to hear you pulled through the storm aswell heard about the weather over there, would recommend some shielding, we had it quite bad hear too
I'm seeing this video with 144 p(quality of video )Jio Hi-Fi with 3gb daily data plan 😞😞😞
Very poor Jio network in my area 😞😞😞
You are so lucky that you have Starlink Space Internet technology.
Elon Musk great man great technology 👍👍👍
Thanks, Amit! I had to read your comment twice to understand your concern about Jio! I thought 144 was pretty darn good...until I saw you said K bps!!! Wow...
Thanks for correction, i mean 144 p (Quality of video )
Mostly in the nights i got above 360 p quality after 11pm. 🤔🤔🤔
I have been troubled for years about the speed I get 1.9 mbs, the real shocking thing is that I live in a developed urban environment.
You should definitely shop around: that's an incredibly bad speed for an urban area. I would not recommend Starlink though, since you can likely get equivalent or better speeds from a regular internet provider using fiber, with a lower price per month.
@@DonJoyce Every provider can not overcome the useless hardware structure. I live in the UK where red tape and law stretches to Uranus and back
@@HasanAhmed-ex6jv All good; I understand! I hope you find a solution.
Hi Don how long was it before you got your unit. I sent deposit back in feb havent heard anything yet. And no way to contact them
Everyone's experience seems to be different.
Hi Michel! There's nothing special about the Starlink router. This video will answer many of your questions: th-cam.com/video/xXpb1NR4K60/w-d-xo.html
@@DonJoyce tanks Don
Thanks Don! This is exactly how I plan on installing mine just a little ways away from you on White Lake.
Cool! But don't steal my bandwidth! Lol
@@DonJoyce just hoping the new generation still fits the old satellite mount.
It's a different antenna, now. Rectangular and the Starlink router has no ethernet aux port anymore. You need to get their ethernet adapter to connect your existing router to it.
Thank you!
Sounds like the video helped! Thanks for watching!
installed my plan A today........nope trees are in the way......going to have to raise the dish :( hope I don't need a tower.
Oh no! Hope you find a solution!
How much does the postage cost for the Starlink kit ? Must be huge !
In Canada, the shipping was $65...not bad considering even a small box costs around $20 to ship now. And if your luck, you'll meet Gary the FedEx guy!
@@DonJoyce "...not bad considering even a small box costs around $20 to ship now....".
How DO they do it for the price ?
They just charged me $50, NW Florida here
can you hooked up a kodi box to the router
I don't know what a kodi box is.
Congrats Don, we are on pre-order, were you invited to the beta or pre-order converted to full order? (he asked jealously! lol) Cant wait to ditch Xplornet!
We joined the pre-order waitlist, and when the 'we're ready for you' message arrived, we immediately said yes, paid the balance, and got all excited!
@@DonJoyce Excellent. Hope that's what we can expect too. I am about 120km north of you.
does snow build up on the dish?
It has internal heating to melt snow, but we haven't had any snow since my installation, so I can't speak from personal experience.
@@DonJoyce Thank you!
I would have either tethered my phone or driven home to Ottawa (2 hours), uploaded, then driven back!
how long did it take to arrive ?
From order to arrival was about a month.
@@DonJoyce so do you pay the $100 or do you pay the $500 + the $100 ?
