- First frost in Whitby. Heater doesn't work, works again, doesn't work again... Condensation is a battle until it freezes solid to the window!
It's all work, work, work, then bed.
Energy is low, so I got a new laptop and started editing in the pub...ok so it's not ALL bad! ;)
Good job I've only got 3 weeks left before I leave Whitby for the next BIG ADVENTURE! :)
All will be revealed soon...
I'm making this up as I go. How am I going to afford it? Where am I going? Why? What do I get up to?
It's going on right now, I'm out here full time and seeing where it takes me!

This is my first van conversion. I have no experience nor particular skills in this. I am basically converting a van to live in full time using the information from watching youtube videos...Let's see how that pans out :)

Hi, my name is Si.
In late September of 2021 I decided that I was a little bored with my small business selling antique and vintage furniture based in South Wales UK which we started 4 years ago from the ground up. I fancied doing something else completely, something fun and a new challenge, and that new thing is full time van life.
So, currently, I've closed down the business and I'm now living in the van partime. I have a Ford Transit SWB medium top van and that’s pretty much it. From here on out I am going to be filming my journey into full time vanlife, the van conversion (no experience) and everything it takes to get there. A kind of before and after video series of how I finally (no guarantees) got to where I want to be.
I am hoping to have the conversion done by summer 2022 (this didn't happen! maybe summer 2023?) and then travel fulltime around the coastline of the UK working along the way to fund the project/lifestyle. I may head to Spain first though? I have no idea what is about to happen... :)
Join me in that process (warts and all) and hopefully I can inspire someone else to do whatever it is they wish to do from the absolute ground up.

a 30amp charger is what 350-400w an hour. fitting 2 and running engine for longer periods would help. you should be able to calculate the usage of the heater and work out how much charging you need to do and if you should add more deep cycle batteries. charge to full, not for 15min as lead acid get damaged. i wouldnt bother with an ecoflow, expensive and cig lighter socket would take forever to charge it.
Thanks for the info. I'm definitely gonna add another 30amp b2b charger for next year. Definitely help. I'm still considering the power station option. Haven't decided yet. 😕 I give the van a good run every couple of weeks but I'm limited in travelling due to current work commitments. That's gonna change soon :)

Hi there Jen :) yes I thought the same regarding the contrast between the two. Not much happening atm video wise, just parked up, working, beer then bed. It'd be different if I was travelling to but that's not really possible atm. Only got 3 weeks left here anyway. Gonna upload some summer ones next to warm the place up a bit 😀

Yep! :) although I need to make a few improvements for next winter for sure; fix heater even though it's brand new - glow plug issue; improve battery input; and try and sort out the condensation on the roof of the bulkhead shelf.

I have Tea light Heaters as a back up. They are enclosed and in a small space they pump some heat out. My primary heat source though is one of those Diesel Heaters you mentioned, an 8kw one. I am an avid Angler as well an in the dead of Winter i will leave one of the Tea light Heaters going. It keeps the temperature in the Bivvy acceptable. You just need to be mindful that there is a flame burning within the Heater, but they do work and they are inexpensive. Good luck bro.

Hey Si, I was watching a vanlife vlog yesterday and the girl was saying she had to buy a new diesel heater because she had kept hers on low and apparently you shouldn't do that because something builds up in it. That is as technical as I get hahahaha I tried to find you on FB to send you the link. It is 5am and I had to do an emergency foster on a Romanian huge dog last weekend and my daughter Georgie and I have just been out in the dark and rain rescuing him because had got stuck behind the shed for f@ck sake haha. Yes, I've heard that too regarding leaving the dh on low as it gets coked up. Lithium battery might be your best investment, £269 for 100ah, atleast then you can draw almost 90% of the power out of the battery intead of just 50% with agm, lithium tends to deal with the cold a little better.
Thanks Shamone, yes I'll go down that route at some point, but I'd like to get some use out of the agm's that I've installed already. Defo gonna add another 30amp b2b charger 😀

It’s due to the diesel heating sucking the amps out of the battery’s when started and when turned off ,
Once you’ve got a power bank or some lithium then it will be fine
I use a 240v ac to dc psu off Amazon (think it’s 30/40 amp ) plugged into the mains (obviously you can’t plug into mains and it’s not the most efficient way of doing it converting 240 to 12v)
Those leisure battery’s can’t cope with the amount of amps sucked out of them on start up and finish cycle and while they run they use a amp up too (not as much as starting and finishing )when ur charging then battery’s back up via the van dc to dc charger your putting 12v back into the battery’s which is great but your not putting the amps back in
You’ve maybe got a 100amp hour battery that the diesel heater sucks out 10/20 amp on start up and then once you shut it off it’s also sucks 10/20amp out so when your charging the batterys back up via the van for 15/20 mins it’s not putting those amps back in ? If that makes sense ?
Yeah that makes sense. I've got 360ah battery bank but they're on low due to very low solar and being parked up on the road because I'm working nearby fulltime. Gonna make some Changes for next year 😀
@@SuperVanVagabond I used to run mine in the garage off a leisure battery and it would Be fine for a while then just die think it was 100amp I got sick of charging it up and ended up buying a 12vdc psu off Amazon 30 amp think it was and it’s not missed a beat since ,
It’s not an option for you but a Bluetti or similar product would be great for ya hahaha come on bluetti jackery etc give this man some power stations to test

Yeah you're right, but the alternative is 10x more expensive. I've now tested it with full battery charge and it still displays the E 3 error code. So I'm gonna change the glow plug. :)

Yeah the batteries are very low most of the time atm. Low solar and nor driving because I'm always in work here...
