  • "Auferstanden aus Ruinen" ("Risen from Ruins", lit. 'Resurrected out [of] Ruins') is a German patriotic song that was the national anthem of East Germany during its existence from 1949 to 1990.

In 1949, the Soviet occupation zone of Allied-occupied Germany became a socialist state under the name of the "German Democratic Republic" (GDR). For the nascent state's national anthem, the poet Johannes Becher, who later became the East German Minister of Culture, wrote the lyrics. Two musicians, Ottmar Gerster and Hanns Eisler, proposed music to Becher's lyrics, and Eisler's version was selected.
Written in 1949, the East German national anthem reflects the early stages of German separation, in which continuing progress towards reunification of the occupation zones was seen by most Germans as appropriate and natural. Consequently, Becher's lyrics develop several connotations of "unity" and combine them with "fatherland" (einig Vaterland), meaning Germany as a whole. However, this concept soon would not conform to an increasingly icy Cold War context, especially after the Berlin Wall had been erected in 1961 by the East German government.
At the end of its last broadcast on 2 October 1990, the East German international radio broadcaster Radio Berlin International signed off with a vocal version of the East German national anthem.

When Germany unified, they should have kept this as the national anthem. Objectively better than the one currently in use.

so you want that a country liberated from communisme on his eastern half and re-unified use a communist anthem while the communist block is still there. even if i agree that is anthem is clearly beautifuler it is still something political so it wouldn't be accepted.
at this point the republic would use Heil dir im Siegerkranz...
no offense, to make it clear, i just say that politics often force peoples to make choices.
-it's like weapons, you use weapons of your political alliance, if you have one.

This is the one true anthem that should be in Germany, or even Europe in general.
We will repair everything they broke, we will build a new better society, we will rise from the ruins of the old system.
And if we won't live to this moment, then our children.

This song is so beautiful with its calming and inspiring melody. Germany should’ve kept it for the national anthem as it fits the so well. I would take this music to make my own anthem because it’s so beautiful

This would have been a better anthem for a unified Germany. It‘s patriotic, speaks of rising from the ruins of war and unification. Not to mention it has an original melody that is dope. Sadly, it was too tainted by communism

@@ddr7246 But the current german anthem existed way before the Nazis. This anthem was created explicitely for Communist Germany. Thats the difference. But this anthem is way better than the current one though.
