very simple clear and explanatory video, my question is; lets say we have choosen section w5x16 for all tension members and lets say we have also conducted the compression member design and we have choosen w8x13 to use for all compression members shouldn't we re analyse the structure with same loading cases since now members have different stiffness values and the load distribution over the members will be different which may cause insufficient capacity for some of the members
In principle, yes! We need to re-analyze the system if we wish to optimize the design. However, in this case, since the selected members are the lightest available sections already, no further weight optimization is possible. Furthermore, since the truss is statically determinate, the change in stiffness of the system does not have any impact on the analysis results; the member forces are not a function of stiffness factors/coefficients at the truss joints.
Hi Dr.Structure ! I have been watching your videos for so long. Your videos content & explanation are incredible..... Could you suggest me some project topics related to structural engineering for my Bachelor's final year project ! I will be grateful to you...
Thank you for your feedback. Concerning a final project for your undergraduate studies, two ideas immediately come to mind: 1) Design a very small (real or imagined) building/structure from start to finish. For example, pick a warehouse with a steel skeleton, a two-level building, or a pedestrian bridge. You will then design the system ground-up, including the foundation, the individual members forming the skeleton of the system, and the roof or the superstructure (if you pick a bridge). You can document your work in a technical report, which, if done thoroughly and professionally, could become a valuable part of your portfolio. 2) You can also center your project around using sustainable materials for buildings. For example, you can work on analyzing and designing a simple structure using bamboo as the main structural material. You should be able to find learning resources and example projects on the use of bamboo online.
Hy Dr.Structure !! Would it be better if I use softwares(autocad ,staadpro) for planning & analysis of two story building for my project or I can do it manually by hand calculations? Please let me know which approach is the best & get more priority?
Such software tools are routinely used in practice. But their use is not a good demonstration of one’s deep knowledge of engineering analysis and design concepts. If you have time, it would be best to perform the analysis and design using hand calculations. Then as a way of verification, and also to demonstrate your familiarity with the software tools, apply them to the problem. This dual approach should make your written report more comprehensive and valuable.
We are in the process of preparing a series of lectures for an introductory course on steel design. However, we have not yet finalized the contents of all the lectures, hence, at the moment do not have prepared video lectures on beam design.
This channel leads phenomenal explanation
Clear and detailed explainations a usual. Great channel
Informative

@@DrStructure oh true the system is already determinite, again thank you for your respone you brightened my mind

@@DrStructure Wow ! This is an amazing idea & I would love to work on this type of project . Thanks a million !!!
