EGG-wypt. My grandfather ran a butcher stand at the Reading Market for decades. I still have his wooden change holder, a piece of wood about 8 x 8 x 1", with grooves in it to hold pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters and half dollars. It's a very nice artifact that reminds me of him. I have never given it away or discarded it and I will hand it down to my daughter or son. OOH, ya gotta watch them Luddites! They are chust as bad as the Dunkards. Gosh you are saying quotes I haven't heard in years -- Nix kum rei. You guys are a breath of fresh air. Fresh COUNTRY air, ain't?
As one of the people who scans their card when the machine has a fluke, I 100% agree. They can be nice with a few items, but I personally think that the regular checkout is quicker.
It depends on the person. I can go into a Wal-Mart supercenter in the middle of the night, get my week's worth of groceries, run through the self checkout, and have have everything put away in my truck in as little as 30 minutes. Granted, I eat two meals of the same thing every day, so it's 14 of each item, which makes it faster.
It really confuses a tourist when I see the Amish use the self checkout at Yoder's supermarket. Expresly when one of them is on the smart phone I have to explain to them the elders in this region let them use it because most of them are technically are post to user for business but you know you know how that works out.
Interesting. You know, 10min from our house there's a cave where the anabaptists met in secret before they fled to PA. And around here the farmers still do have those old kinds of self serve mini-stores. Like farmer Rick around the corner where you can buy taters and eggs and stuff and put money in the box. Also, i kinda like the shtick. "Shtick" is urban-amish though, what is the PA-dutch word for it?
Your self-checkout systems sounds horrible. In Sweden we have a system where everyone grabs a hand-scanner on the way in, you scan every item as you bag it in the store, and when you walk out you put the scanner back in a stand and swipe your card and boom, you are done.
What is that PD expression you used, for "nothing comes of that"? It's something I'd like to keep in my vocabulary, especially when Weis's, Giant or McDonald's tries to steer me to the self checkout or the kiosk.
Hypothetically if they would take out those self serve cash registers and put human back as cashiers there would be a whole lot less people out of work LOL Walmart
They complain about the unemployment rate but yet how many self serve cash registers does Walmart have across this country LOL hahaha and how about those self-driving vehicles that coming out those things terrify me because vehicles are not supposed to drive their self my personal opinion they won't be able to go through the tunnel and certain parts of this country don't have GPS signal so what are they supposed to do then go figure
Wait... I just watched "Kelly does her thing" on TH-cam where Doug was her guest and he was speaking perfect American English. In this video he has a strong accent? Is this a shtick or something, first video of Doug's that I watched.
This is how I normally or naturally speak (a common PA Dutch accent in English). When I am doing more formal stuff, I turn the accent off. Maybe that is cop-out, but I found that it works better when I am outside of the PA Dutch geographical regions. Hope that helps!
Ahhh ok if the title wasn't PA Dutchman, I would have thought more like orthodox Jewish men. I lived in south Florida for many years near an Jewish orthodox synagogue, hence the correlation. I was also raised in an ultra conservative European church much like the Mennonites. (Not quite that extreme) I left that church many years ago as the doctrine was not entirely biblical. You have to admit the food is incredible. I can still taste some of them homemade strudels and pastries the older women made. I learned how to make and master them too but got diagnosed with Celiac which ended my relationship with pastries. You guys are a hoot. Question: Do the Amish still put up barns for one another?
what a great comedy team! Superb!

I find the self-checkout works at grocery stores work well, but Home depot's are terrible. It wasn't always that way but it is now.
I’m a luddite and proud of it.

There is no perk... It's not like you get a discount for doing the work yourself...
They are ok if you have one or two items. Otherwise they only steal the job of the poor Kassenfrau.

Plus, this set of videos is meant to be funny and yeah, it is kind of like a schtick....if you will!
