- Konami was one of the kings of gaming in the 90s. It seems like they were putting out all kinds of genres, so it's no surprise they put out an adventure game on the N64. Let's see what Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon is all about!

When Thab first began this challenge, I didn't think it would blow up as much as it did. Now it's become one of my favorite series to look forward to on TH-cam. Props for the dedication.
Yes, I remember being furious that the first video only had 5,000-odd views after a few weeks. It's been so gratifying seeing this series get the exposure it deserves.
I was into his Mario Maker videos and would somewhat frequent the channel, but as soon as this came out, I was hooked lol.
What did you do on youtube before this challenge?
I started at #18. Binged them all right away, and now I can’t wait for Fridays! It’s such an intense grind to go on. The editing and Thab’s commentary are top notch (especially on the sports games)
Do you think snes will be after n64?
To those who want to play the game themselves: The star blocks have an auto-lock-on feature. All you need to do is jump towards one, keep the stick in its general direction and use the chain pipe. It will lock on 100 % of the time, no need to manually fiddle around with positioning.
Thanks for the great advice,im bout to play this since i never had the chance back then.
Jumping at them is also cooler
Dang, I remember jumping and grabbing the blocks mid-air, I always thought I was just a gamer lol
This is a top 5 n64 game
Here’s an interesting tidbit, this game only sold 55,000 in America and around 141,000 in Japan (it had a PAL release but I’m not sure what it sold in that region) making this game one of the rarest titles on N64 but what’s amazing is it’s remembered so fondly. My brother traded an extra copy of Turok on the bus to get this game and it’s been in my possession ever since. Great game and one I play through at least once a year!!
It was maybe the most fun I remember on N64. Never knew it sold so few copies and was rare!
At a certain point in japanese history they made it so you needed to be nobility to own a sword. So those pipes sort of became the self defense weapon of choice for a while.
And at least in Okinawa it's why tonfa and nunchaku were typical weapons. Having no blades, they resembled innocuous tools such as for threshing.
Cool lore! Thanks bud! (Or budette) lol
Brings new meaning to smoking your enemies.
Also Shakuhachi bamboo flutes
When I played this as a kid, I thought Ebisumaru was Geno from SMRPG.
One of my most cherished games of my nigh 35 years of gaming. Was genuinely obsessed with this game when it came out. My brother and I did not own a memory card at the time and would rent this game *constantly* from a local video game shop. We loved it so much we would play as far as we could, and attempt to leave the 64 on as long as possible to beat it. Naturally it would always freeze and we would have to restart all the time, but we learned more about the game each time and loved it so much it never mattered. That same love carried on to Goemon's Great Adventure. Both of them were a testament to the gambles that companies were willing to make back in the day, what with the authentically Japanese whackiness and charm that would have been polarizing for many kids who knew nothing about Japanese culture and humor. Those who played these games and loved them, they are always in your heart even to this day ❤
Goemon's Great Adventure is one of the best games on the N64 hands down. Glad to see so much love for this one too!
My story is identical... no memory card. I'd only ever made it just a lil past getting Sasukes batteries. Finally beat it a couple years ago lol with a memory card of course
@@steeda6 Same! I remember the day we finally woke Sasuke up we were cheering and so happy...then the 64 froze like 30 min later 🤣
best n64 soundtrack out of the whole library imo!
TRUUU it goes crazy hard, almost no other N64 music sounds as high quality
@@chillvgm it’s fantastic.
The sequel has an even better one.
@@Imgema YES I've saved a bunch from both games they're so good 😭 I always forget Goemon's Great Adventure was the sequel, it being a side scroller lol
I listen to the intro regularly even nowadays.
yes! been waiting for this one. my favourite n64 game hands down.
I prefer the sequel, try it out if you havent played it.
YES! This is one of the games I never owned but rented ALL the time. Cheers!
I feel the same way.
Same, definitely in my top 5, including the sequel.. such an amazing soundtrack as well!
Played this a ton before Ocarina. It was crazy to me how similar it ended up being. I'd had no experience with Goemon before then. I was a huge Power Rangers fan then too, so I loved the robot sections.
I had a whole controller pak page dedicated to the 3 robot battles on separate save files. I wish the game had given you the option to replay them, but this worked for me...
Edit: Apparently there IS a hidden robot boss rush mode! But I never unlocked it...
I feel with the rating the time it was realized in relation to the other N64 games should be considered. Cause mystical ninja goemon predates ocarina of time by atleast a year... yet it has so many of the stables that ocarina gets credited for "staples" of gaming. i think that is a huge part why goemon is so fondly remebered. also if your not a fan of the absurd humor then goemon as a franchise wont stand out to you
ratings are just based off of his enjoyability of the game. thab's played oot at least a few times but if iirc a ton of times so id bet that "ruined" MNSG's chances of having a higher rating. Game was awesome but probably pretty just okay if you've already played oot a ton and never MNSG
I love this channel bro. I'm sure you hear this all the time.
I was too young to actually finish the games. Blockbuster and stuff, also my attention span. The only I remember beating was Ocarina of time. And of course Goldeneye. I'm so glad I get to see the full end game. Thank you so much bro! Never thought I would see it.
Finally! This was one of my fav N64 games growing up in the late 90's. I was finally able to snag a used copy from blockbuster for $20 eventually and then got a memory card. Every time I had rented it prior I would just play until I had to power off because I never had a memory card
Never beat this as a kid because we didn't have a memory card to save the game! Haha. I think the furtherest I got was the batteries for the little ninja dude, so thanks for showing me what the rest of the game was like. The PLASIMA!! part has been locked away in my brain for a very long time hahah
Wowwwwww I cannot believe you got to the batteries without a memory pak!!! Hahaha
I clearly remember having the issue of Nintendo Power featuring this game in High School. I’d read it over and over again during study hall. I wasn’t disappointed. Those were the days.
"I cant play the song or ill get copyrighted, its called I Am Impact"
*Plays it in the background anyways*
I live in Japan now, and a major influence of why I got involved in Japa is this game, OST is still good to listen too
When I was a kid, I got my N64 from my grandfather. He said he was playing it too much and was super addicted, so he felt like he should give it up. I think, in reality, his new wife just didn't like him playing video games. Anyway, he had all the well-known N64 titles and then Goemon. It was so puzzling as a kid seeing this game that neither me nor any of my friends had ever heard of, but I really loved playing it. I'm not sure I ever got past the second temple, but it was still such a cherished memory for me and it was so hype seeing you play it.
I keep forgetting Goemon had an n64 game, mainly because i played the snes one with a friend (it had coop) on a hacked original xbox with emulators and thousands of games.
That game over screen caught me completely off guard lol i was not expecting that
"PRRRRASMA!!!" is truly one of the game audio clips of all time
This is it... I can finally say that "I was waiting for this moment"!!!
The 2nd one is also amazing. Pretty much the best 2D Jump and Run on the N64.
“Just to prove this fight isnt so hard as when yall were 6 years old”. This statement is true for a lot of games, also for the demolition man mission in VC😂
This game is like some sort of digital cryptid from my youth. Thanks for confirming that wasnt a fever dream.
One of the most charming games from it's time, so much character, amazing music.. it was an unforgettable experience as a kid just like it's successor!
I never told you but I've definitely been waiting to see you play this , what an absolute gem of a game
I played this game as a 6 year old on release..... I had no idea what I was doing and I didn't even get to the mountain, but.... I had fun with it :D
The joke motivation for the villains is that they are westernizing Japan (*scream of horror*). It's a jab at Japan's extreme isolationism during the Edo period. That's why some NPCs in the beginning talk about things being transformed into Western equivalents.
This is one of my all time favorite games. When I first played it, I didn't know much English and the mother of a neighbor kid I was friends with had to translate most of it for us. This game never got a german translation and instead was released in english.
It ignited my life long love for all things Japan. I still listen to the awesome song "I am Impact" every other day.
Been waiting for this one since the beginning. I loved how quirky and strange this Zelda-ish platform er was when I was a kid. Great video man.
My favorite N64 game. Dash dash dash!
Ah, my favorite N64 game! Glad you came through it on the positive side, the game oozes charm, just like the rest of the Goemon series. Speaking of, can't wait 'til you cover Goemon's Great Adventure!
This game was a blindspot for me, but I love the humour - might end up having to give it a try one of these days.
me and my brothers used to play mystical ninja on the SNES all the time, ta few years later we got this one. the only thing i remember was that there was a huge robot that you control and that someone's house blows up.
For those old enough to remember, this game's art and character design looks very similar to a cartoon show from the 90's called Samurai Pizza Cats. A mixture of Edo era culture and high tech gadgets. Hey guys, you should watch that show any way you can. It's AWESOME.
The pipe is a reference to Edo era gangsters who would use their pipes (yes, the kind for smoking drugs) as weapons. They were these long thin metal pipes
Thab: makes every attempt to pronounce Japanese correctly
Also Thab: “daleeee eaaarnharddddta” in nascar
THIS was my favorite game back when i was a kid. I hope it holds up
One of my favs on N64, always love to see new perspectives on it! Can't wait for Goemon's Great Adventure (unless I missed it already)
I've been waiting for this game specifically...one my top 5 N64 games. And it's soundtrack is awesome
This makes me so stoked for Goemon's Great Adventure
Hell yeah one of the greatest N64 titles
Oh man, I love this game. This game was happy accident/hidden gem when I rented it at from a video store, and man it's sooo good. Still waiting when you get around to playing Mischief Makers!
I wish the gaming industry focused more on games like this than the vast majority of AAA games releasing these days.
I loved this game when I was a kid. Thanks for the video!
Damn I been here since game 20ish, happy to see you’re still going 💪
Goemon was huge in Japan. Out of the maybe 30 games released, the west only ever got 2 or 3.
Unrelated but youre telling me they thought "Kunai With Chain" was a better card name translation than just using the actual name, kusari boomerang? Like...what a missed opportunity.
Been waiting MONTHS for this one!
I remember playing this at a friends place we got it as a rental he didn't have a memory card so we played it for a couple hours then had to turn it off and I never played it again but it's the kind of weird game that became a core memory.
I have no idea, but did the team behind Snowboard Kids also come up with this? Identical art style and standard of 3D graphics, character design, and weirdness.
I always saw this game at Blockbuster but never ended up renting it. Thank you for showing me. Looks like a fun romp.
Bruh I actually remember this game from when I was a kid, I may have even rented it from blockbuster, but much like Quest 64, I dont think I ever made it out of the first few areas or even figured out how to play the game. But I loved the characters and art direction so I only have positive memories, even though I accomplished virtually nothing. I was very very young lol
Mystical Ninja and Goemon's Great Adventure are 2 of the greatest N64 games that absolutely no-one knows about xD.
Forgot about the game over screen, that made me chuckle!
0:04 a bit sus for youtube LOL
its the right amount of sus + hooks the viewers in
Lol I'm dead!!!!!!!😂
Omg yes definitely my favourite underrated gem on the system!! Still a great game to play today and with a wacky sense of humour.
Thanks for the content and edits! ❤
I never owned the game but beat it on a rental period over a weekend as a kid and to be honest I wonder how I managed to do that because I couldn't speak english at that time and like you said, it's not that easy to progress and I didn't have a walktrough back then. But despite not knowing what's going on I enjoyed that game really much and this video was a nice throwback to that time. I'd love to see a polished version on newer systems but Konami is not what it used to be anymore.
I'm not sure if the "i have never seen this game in my life" thing is a channel meme, or if thab was locked up in a basement all his life until now.
Had been waiting for you to get to this gem 💎
I wish more people knew about this game and it's sequel.
There have been a LOT of Goemon games. But for some reason only a handful of them have been released outside of Japan. It's a crying shame because the games are really good.
@@AlvinEarthwormI have played the 4 that were released in the states. The gameboy one is awful, but the other 3 are great. I really love the 2 N64 games.
@@chesspunk489 the three Snes sequels are very good too, they're like great adventure if you ever wanted more of that, I might even prefer a few of them
@@JetWolfEX Too bad they are not in english.
This game looks fun for sure haha. That HUGE map on the screen is kinda annoying though lol. ALSO whats with all the suggestive body movements 🤣🤣. @2:12 you got a dude air humping towards you, and then at 4:30 uhhhh lol
Did you miss the implication that Sasuke is the one who accidentally blew up the Wise Man's House? XD
The doom music... chefs kiss!
I rented this game when I was a child. Wow
I know it takes a lot to put these together but i really enjoy them….. thank you.
Are you excited about Mameda no Bakeru? It looks like the old Goemon team got back together for one more go!
Oh man, we finally landed on fighters destiny! Love that game so much😊
This, and the multiplayer on the second were some great times back in the day.
the sound track is so good
My absolute favorite N64 game
I loved this game back in the day
I always saw this game at the video store but never rented it because i didnt think i would like such a japanese game. Seems i missed out because i think i would have loved this game as a kid.
I rented this game from blockbuster and beat it in one fever dream of a weekend.
One of my n64 favorite game! Gonna enjoy this one!!!
Never even heard of this game, but now I feel like I need to play it
Only ever rented this game and never made that much progress, most I did was beat the first robot boss. Should have bought it since I liked it so much, little kid game vs rent purchasing decisions were so inscrutable in retrospect.
FINALLY a game I played when it was released and managed to finish!
Goemon is really awesome love these games.
YES!! Played so much of this!
FWIW this game came out before LoZ OOT.
and imo its in top 5 n64 games
Same here sir. Until youtube i had no idea a goemon existed. No wonder as i cant imagine playing any game. But the wheel dictates you must and at 53 years old and nothing to do i will watch.
What I'm still waiting to see is Tetrisphere
18:45 He said Cycle!
FINALLY YOU GET TO THIS GAME!!
"You'll never take me alive, Kappa!"
This needs a remaster
One of my all time favorites. Love it so much I even made the retro achievements for this one 😃
been waiting awhile for this one 👍
I loved the absolute hell of out this game when I was a kid.
im sure 98% of us reacted the same way to the game over screen like you did :D like wtf
this entire game feels like a Zelda demo
This gives me Gintama vibes xD
I miss this series. The comedy was always so good.
Good memories of this game but oh, man was the camera bad!
2:15 DGR? Is that you?
i absolutely loved this game
At the five second mark of this video it looked like you were doing something inappropriate. Lol
my fondest memory of this game is..... one of my best friends as a kid, had a friend who let me borrow this game. and i never returned it. like 3 years later i was in a whole different school and was walking home and the kid saw me while he was on his bus and yelledout the window, I WANT MY GAME BACK!! lol. never saw him again. and i still have the game lol
u might be a criminal ngl that might be a crime bro
@@CrawYT lol, i guess.. if he cn find me he can have it. idk where he moved too. shoot if he got off the bus and came home with me id have given it to him. anyways. thanks for being a lame :)
