    There is no argument to the simple fact that Dame Maggie is in the top five of the greatest actresses of all time! Adore her and am in complete awe of her work! She is not only great in drama but quite a good comedic actress also!

      i don’t like her here’s the reason why... at my school we had a supply teacher who was an actor and friends with the woman who played the librarian in the first couple films of harry potter. she told him about her experience. apparently maggie didn’t like the fact that the librarian had a taller hat than her! she also hated the fact that the librarian got to sit next to alan rickman at one point. guess what she did? she
      got the librarian fired. apparently she was always complaining and being rude.

    The interviewer could not really comprehend that she did not really appreciate or want to see that old film of she and Carol Burnett. Also one really sees the awkwardness between the american mentality and British. Having lived and adapted to both I can see and feel it very profoundly.
    My experience with people like Dame Maggie is they live in the present and don't look back unless there is a point. That is the secret to their longevity and youthful outlook on life.

    • @mel3687
      @mel3687 9 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Yes, I immediately recognized her discomfort, but people can get so caught up in their good intentions that they sometimes overlook other's feelings.
      That's an interesting interpretation. I thought that she found watching the video (and by extension, looking into her past) terribly sad-- the way you remember happier times that you can never again eclipse.
      I suspect it has something to do with their stages in life. He still looks fondly into the past with a sense of nostalgia, whereas she seems to regard it as a fossil record..."those were the days," and these are the last hours of dusk, so to speak. No wonder she doesn't watch her own work. It's a reminder of her mortality.
      But I don't think this is a differentiation between American/British mentality. It's something of a timeless, universal theme. Or did I misunderstand you? Did you mean Americans are more emotionally expressive whereas the British are more emotionally reserved? The proverbial "stiff upper lip?"

    • @cmcb09
      @cmcb09 8 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Like all truly great actors and actresses, Maggie Smith is a purely imaginative creator of characters. No Method nonsense about "life logic", "sense memory", or "relating" to props. A great artist in every sense.

    The interviewer keeps slaughtering her humour. She keeps making small jokes and he kinda answers in an expressionless, kinda not-feeling-it way. Was a bit annoying.

      He is out of his element, other than Charlie Rose I doubt CBS has anyone in their stable of interviewers who wouldn't have been.

      Steven Barker his name is Mo Rocca (birth name is Maurice Rocca) and he is a journalist, humorist and actor. He used to be a regular correspondent on The Daily Show from 1998-2003. I remember seeing him on The Daily Show back in the day, both with Craig Kilborn and Jon Stewart.

      Mo Rocca must have connections because he is so awful but manages to work annoying everyone.

    I felt the same as Dame Maggie. As a Brit living in the States, my first memories of visiting NY was That it’s like being in a movie. And now living in Los Angeles, i too notice the brightness and was told many years later the lighting here is different and thus a great location in which to film.

    The first time I saw the peerless Maggie Smith was as the tragic Judith Hearne in the incredibly sad film 'The Lonely Passion Of Judith Hearne'. A shamefully overlooked and relatively unknown film from 1988 which also starred Bob Hoskins. Any one who hasn't seen this classic gem simply MUST see it.

    She is lovely. One of the best. I was going to use an exclamation point after "One of the best", but then I thought Dame Maggie Smith might disapprove.

    Maggie Smith seems rather unconcerned with the past, quite eager to go on to the next project with hardly a backward glance. It's hard to know whether or not she was grateful of, or even pleased with, her time on Downton Abbey.

      @SF-wz5tz 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      They were pretty grateful to have had her though I'd bet, because she was a HUGE part of why Downton was a success.
      I think she's just a true actress. Gives her all to each performance and then leaves it there to move to the next one and giver her all to that one

    What a life!!! Talented actor, gifted humorist, and clever as ever always. I appreciate her contributions to entertainment.
    I always know it’s going to be worth watching when her name appears.
    I very much admire her for not having her face mucked up by plastic surgeons. She ages gracefully and is just perfection💁🏻‍♀️

    🥰 she was in the VIPs 1963 with Rod Taylor and I just thought her and her “bitter lemons” were hilarious 😂😂 not to mention a cast of Orson Welles, Elizabeth Taylor, Louis Jordán, and Richard Burton. Dame Smith has always held her own on the screen 👏🏽👏🏽🙌🏽

    I think that so many people, undoubtedly unfamiliar with Mo Rocca's very unique and very dry sense of humor, failed to see what at least I felt that I saw. It looked to me that she very much enjoyed him, and he was clearly in awe if her. It was sort of a "nod, nod, wink, wink" beginning to end, at least once they began to understand each other. And, I think they enjoyed playing off of each other. I believe what others have also observed, that Maggie Smith would have simply cut the interview short had she not enjoyed it. I didn't see one place in the interview to make me think otherwise, as she never pulled her punches, while Mo, in utter awe of Maggie sought to play the foil to whatever direction she took on, further highlighting her, as he should have. In fact, I felt that I saw just a hint of flirtation, which I found very intriguing.
