    Maybe a silly question. Using puppy pads instead of diapers and its great! Has anyone tried a puppy or incontinence pad as a monotub liner? Maybe too wet? Might try it. Would appreciate your thoughts.

      Yes. Please call me Ed. If it is badly contaminated, I would get it as far away as possible. These days, I don't even try saving contaminated stuff. It's just not worth the risk of spreading contamination to later grows.

    Hey Edward,
    Is there a way to save stalled boxes? I have 2 of them and I'm about ready to flip them over and see if the bottom will do anything. Lol.
    I just put them in a box like this recently for better humidity, but don't think that was the problem. Anything at all? 😢

    • @edwardgrand
      @edwardgrand  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There are a lot of reasons why they might have stalled. Hard to know without a photo. Sometimes, patience is the best thing. It really depends on a lot of variables. If they are dry, dunking them for 4-6 hours might help. But if it's truly stalled from contamination, there's not much you can do.

      @@melindawilliams6624you could always rehydrate via dunking or using a syringe to inject water into it. If I ever get stalls, I scrap the top and add a pseudo casing layer. Usually helps.

    • @edwardgrand

      Get rid of all contaminated or possibly contaminated things.
      Keep household garbage and refuse to a minimum. I take my garbage out at least 2 times a day.
      Don't keep cakes past their 3rd flush.
      Keep pets, kids, and food out of the grow area.
      Try not to let it happen again by using pre-emptive measures. Once they get a hold, they are very difficult to control.

    Sodium polyacrylate is a very curly and very long chain of molecules. When it mixes with water, the chain starts to stretch out and expose more molecules that attract water. The molecules expand to hold water.
    Remove the powder and put it in a cup. If you add water, you will see how quickly the powder absorbs the water and leaves you with a gel. When the adult diaper is in use, that gel sits within thin cotton fibers which hold it in place and create a barrier between the liquid and your skin, keeping you clean and dry.
    Some diapers can absorb up to 40 oz. of liquid - that’s about the same as a SUPER Big Gulp at 7-11.

    Ed, I have a question about a method you use that I really like- stapling the spawn bags. That seems super convenient, but I'm scared the staple holes could be a vector for contaminants. How exactly do you staple them while keeping contams out? Love your content, by the way- quality myco information from an actual expert is hard to come by!

    • @edwardgrand
      @edwardgrand  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      When I fold the top of the bag down, I try to make the folds about 1/4" wide. When you staple, make sure you hit the middle of the fold.

    • @edwardgrand

      I usually can't help myself and open it once or twice a day. :) The volume inside the monotub also helps to dilute the carbon dioxide.

  • @vincentwu2848
    @vincentwu2848 ปีที่แล้ว

    Just wondering if you've got any thoughts on using less substrate in 6 quart shoeboxes so that you can place the lid on them and use them as a mini-monotub, as opposed to placing them inside a larger container. Using half as much substrate in a small box should not translate to less than half as much mature fruit, so it seems like an efficient way to experiment with various species to test suitability for a larger monotub.

    • @edwardgrand
      @edwardgrand  ปีที่แล้ว +1
