Why Masterworks Spent Millions On a 1986 Jean-Michel Basquiat Painting

- Can any artist truly have a "best" year? It depends on how you look at it. While 1983 is widely considered to be Jean-Michel Basquiat's best year for creating works, we're taking a look at his 1986 painting titled "Dark Milk," which we have acquired at Masterworks at our Upper East Side gallery in New York City.
Born in Brooklyn, NYC, in 1960, Basquiat is celebrated as one of the 20th century's most intriguing artists.
In 1981, he gained recognition with the groundbreaking exhibition "New York/New Wave" at MoMA's PS1. Following this, gallerist Annina Noisei offered him a studio, leading to his first solo show in 1982. By 1985, he was already one of the decade's most influential artists, as highlighted in The New York Times Magazine's "New Art, New Money" profile. Today, his works can sell for hundreds of millions of dollars.
"Dark Milk" encapsulates key elements typical of Basquiat's finest works, including skulls, precise oil stick details, and text that he intentionally crossed out. Basquiat crafted this composition by affixing photocopies of his own illustrations to the canvas and incorporating white and brown passages. Created in 1986, it followed Basquiat's 1985 appearance on the cover of the New York Times Magazine in an article titled, "New Art, New Money."
Created in 1986, it encapsulates his unique vision and hints at the inner turmoil that would come to define his final years. Tragically, Basquiat passed away in 1988, making "Dark Milk" a work from the young artist's final years.
