Went to Best Buy. Told the guy I needed an RCA to HDMI converter and an HDMI to HDMI cable. I was out of there in 3 minutes. Took 1 minute to hook up and works great! I thought it was impossible to ever watch old family DVD’s again. Yay! I bought the INSIGNIA brand converter which DID include the power plug. Thank you for the video!

Great Video. Hey, I'm old and don't pick up on technology too well. Would you or somebody please tell me EXACTLY what I need to ask for at Best Buy or Wal Mart? Also, how much? Then, only with the help of your video, I can hook up my dumb DVD player to my Smart Amazon Fire TV. I like how you explained everything so thoroughly, good lighting and good camera views. Also, you made a short video and got right to the point--no nonsense. You'll save me big bucks because I was ready to have Geek Squad come out to my house to hook it up. Thank you very, very much.

Kinds of late to the party, but if I were doing the asking, I would ask for a RCA-to-HDMI converter. An RCA cable is what that cable with the red-white-yellow ends is called. Here's a simplified version of what I figured out from watching this video and others. The RCA cable has the sound, video, etc, separated into individual cables. That's why there are three male ends that need to be plugged into the female ends. I think you can guess why cabling will refer to male and female connectors. What an HDMI cable does, is wrap it all up into one cable. To make an old device work with a TV that doesn't have the female RCA connectors, you need to convert the three into one, thus the RCA-to-HDMI converter. So you plug the cables (red-white-yellow most likely) that came with your VCR or DVD player into the converter that you bought. Then you plug an HDMI-to-HDMI that you also bought (unless you have one lying around like in the video) from the converter to the TV. You will need to power the converter. I found one on Amazon that provides you with the power cable to power the converter but it doesn't come with the adapter. An adapter (that dongle that you plug a USB cable into and then plug into the wall) you most likely do have lying around. I hope this helps. It certainly helped me to write it down!
@@FrenchMonkeyBD Wow! What a succinct and thorough explanation. Great teacher. You explained a complex process in simple terms. I was able to hook it up myself a few months ago.
