Great Cars: JEEP

  • The Jeep was drafted in World War II and soon became the American soldier's best friend. The unusual looking vehicle was used as a combat car, postal carrier, snowplow and ambulance. It could forge a stream, dig trenches, churn the water in a washtub and serve as a wedding altar. After the war, it was thought this amazing vehicle would fade away like an old soldier. But today Jeep-like SUV’s are among the world's top sellers and Jeeps refuse to fade away.

    • @chrislemaster2695
      @chrislemaster2695 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes AMC did make the 4.0L Straight 6 in 1986 for the 1987 model year to replace the crappy Chevrolet 2.8L V-6.

    • @GorillaCookies
      @GorillaCookies 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Your incorrect . The 4.0 was in fact designed by AMC . It is actually just a refinement of the 258 / 4.2 engine . Better ports , combustion chamber and induction. And as for the "crappy" 2.8 liter GM produced V6 ...It wasnt a bad engine in reality . It lacked power but I have a 86 Cherokee
      " Cherokee Chief " 2.8 / 5 speed manual that I bought brand new in 86 that has 314,567 original miles on it. It just passed emissions test again here in California. Its definitely no power house but its never had a single mechanical issue and has only had regular basic maintenance since day 1. Im not a GM fan but cant deny the truth . The 2.8 is a gutless engine but the one I have has been incredibly reliable .

The thing is gutless! Now we have a problem with the T case kicking into Part Time or High 4wd at random. Sometimes you can park it and it was running fine. Never use the 4wd that day. Go to take off the next day and it's stuck in 4wd and got what sounds like a M16 in the T case! MPG is 11 on the highway too! I don't know if it was just a bad one with a lot of weakness from the factory. Maybe built on a Monday or Friday?! But I know it sure has not impressed me at all!

      Actually your more incorrect than correct. FCA US LLC is the parent company of Both Fiat & Chrysler Corp which includes the Jeep Division . Jeeps are still produced in the Toledo Ohio plant where they have been built for decades. FCA is a American / Italian Corp which is actually owned by stock holders who happen to be mostly American. You can claim Fiat owns Jeep and that Fiat builds them but the facts are that Jeep is still made in America in the same place they have been for decades. And Jeep , Chrysler and Fiat are all 3 actually owned by people like myself who have invested money by buying shares . Paper and the media may say FCA US LLC owns and manufactures Jeep but I like countless others have paper that says I am a owner of FCA US LLC. And I am as American as one can be !

    So, the producer of this would like you to believe that the HMMWV is "a direct descendant of the jeep," Well, sorry. No it's not. The HMMWV is a direct descendant of the M151 series of 4x4, 1/4 ton trucks, which were designed by Ford in the early 1950s beginning with M151, followed by M151A1 and M151A2. Oddly, several of these M151s were shown earlier in the video without comment about what they were.

    • @jackrotter9434

      wyomarine What’d you expect the Jeep to handle like on road? Sure Toyota’s drive more comfortable on road and are good off road. But they are definitely not as capable off road as a Jeep is. Hence why jeeps compromise on road comfort for off-road performance. I’ve driven a Land Cruiser LR3, Toyota 4Runner, and a Jeep wranglers. They all have their pros and cons. But if I’m gonna do the rubicon trail with a stock vehicle, guess which one I’m gonna take, the Jeep.

    • @jackrotter9434
      @jackrotter9434 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      wyomarine maybe go follow “TheRoadChoseMe” he took a stock TJ across the entire continent of South America with no issues. Then he took a JKU across the entire continent of Africa without issue and he even rolled it, but it worked fine on sketchy gas, land without roads. And idk what the f#%* you mean they aren’t in Australia lmfao there are full on Jeep rallies there with a massive following. Two woman took on an overland navigating race in a Jeep rubicon and won, beating out Raptors, land cruisers, and land rovers. If you are so biased, then open your eyes and see that companies that had a rough past can always innovate and create better products. It’s called learning from your mistakes.

    • @jfisher2370
      @jfisher2370 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I don't think Jeep is why they end up in financial trouble. Historically the companies were already hedging off financial trouble & they buy the Jeep name in hopes it will turn their failing company around. Kaiser did it buying Willy's. The Kaiser/Nash auto line was failing & not selling by 60s. But Jeep survived beyond any Kaiser or Nash cars. AMC bought Jeep in 70s to compete with the big three (GM, Ford, Chrysler) but had horrible automobiles (witness the Gremlin, Javalin, & Pacer). They bought Jeep which kept them afloat for a little while but their cars were huge failures - Again, Jeep survived & Chrysler bought Jeep in 1987. They formed the Jeep/Eagle division. Eagle was a fail but they've kept Jeep under their umbrella. Chrysler has had subsequent mergers with Daimler-Benz & now Fiat. And Jeep continues to survive & has had 32 yrs as a Chrysler division ~ longer that ownership by any other past owners including Willy's. Jeep is a successful niche market but can't be the sole division to keep a major auto manufacturer solvent in modern economic times.
