I used to shoot pool after work, and after I whupped a few people (and got whupped myself), this was my favourite pastime after beer and billiards. And I wouldn’t get home until after 1 or 2 in the morning from playing this game. I blew a lot of quarters playing this game, but in return, I’ve MASTERED this game! I have no regrets, baby. None at all! (God, I miss the 90s)
Ah this game was a classic for my N64 Nostalgia filled childhood. I had the port of this game but always was glad to play the Arcade version whenever I could find it in an Arcade in Vegas.

LOL the stutter sure gives it away that this was being emulated. I own this arcade and have hundreds if not thousands of hours of play time by now I am sure. It's pretty interesting how it was designed solely to be a money maker. The race was designed that you are *always* paced very closely no matter what, even if the game has to cheat to do it. First place does not guarantee track record and vice versa. You will ALWAYS have the other cars pace you, no matter your speed and track perfection. The way to take first place is to get slightly past center of the car immediately racing you, then bump them. As long as you are leading you will get a boost from them to pass them. Continue this method until you are in the lead. If you are to quick to hit them you boost thier speed and lose your own. After you are in first be sure to drive perfectly following the darkened by rubber paths of each track when possible and never scrape or hit anything. Learn each tracks shortcuts. Etc. But remember you will NEVER have a significant lead on any of the cars. It's the design of the game to eat quarters not be realistic. It shows that it's willing to cheat to get those profits too. Such as if you are right behind a car you can at times see it go right through an oncoming without collision, but you will always hit that oncoming. A car you hit/slow/drive into a barrier will *immediately* be back on your tail. Stuff like that... ok enough rambling.
@wolvenar I know your comment is a year old, but there was something I only ever noticed when emulating on a slow cpu. Sometimes when bumping into your opponents, you car will toss fruit at the enemy driver like a watermelon. @Alex Snitzer That's usually how it works. You could try a multicore processor, but the individual cores of those processors need to be at least something like 3 ghz. These games are all rendered in software with little use for modern graphics cards because for mame, accuracy comes first. It would be nice if there was an option to use external glide wrappers for games like these, but nobody's really ever bothered to implement something like that for mame.
@@burningwreckage00 I haven't noticed that. Yes single core high computational power cpu helps the emulation immensely, but I have never been able to throw enough power at this game to make it run perfectly yet. Guess if I didn't have mostly ancient hardware that might be different
thanks a lot for posting this!!!! I remembered this game had Willow Springs and Laguna Seca and got curious for what they looked like since I've played this almost 20 years ago now. The Nintendo version only had made up race tracks instead of those 2 I think

I wonder if you can fix the stuttering by simply throwing obscene CPU power at it? Like a 9900K or 3800X.
