    Thank you so much for this! I get so anxious riding my bike in my small town and I was just freaking out thinking about what might happen on a really busy street.

    Fantastic! I live in Amsterdam (and bike almost every day about 25 miles) and went to New York last september, for the first time, and one of the best things was cycling New York. Your trip gives me the opportunity to live it all over again! thanks!

    I would love to see a video of your route home too! I just recently uploaded a video showing my daily morning bike commute in Toronto. I was worried about it not being exciting enough too. However, to keep it interesting I wore a microphone and recorded myself narrating the route as I rode, so that I could point out land marks and tell stories along the way. Maybe this is something you could try too? It would be awesome to hear you narrating your routes!

    Excellent video! This really brought back lots of great memories for me. I'm so jealous that your daily commute includes riding over the Queensboro Bridge! I live in Toronto, but two summers ago I did a solo trip to NYC with my bike and toured all over the city. My hotel was in Manhattan but I rode out through Flushing and Astoria, and even up through the Bronx. It was an amazing trip, and a beautiful (semi-bike-friendly) city!

    By New York standards those streets are very friendly to you and your bike. I always thought of New York streets as safe as a busy aircraft carrier flight deck. Good video, wish you safe travels and keep your head swivel.

    Thanks for posting this. I was really wanting to get a feel for what the NYC bike commute experience is. My wife and I are considering relocating from Seattle to NYC soon, and I plan on continuing to commute via bicycle. I also record every bike ride on my GoPro. I've been hit by2 cars and a FedEx truck, and this is supposed to be something like the 3rd most bike friendly city in the US, haha!

    I just used a cheap voice recorder that I bought for around $20. The voice recorder has a microphone jack which I used to plug in an earpiece with a little microphone that I picked up at radio shack for about $3. I covered the mircophone with a piece of foam for blocking out the wind noises.

    Your commute looks safer than mine here in the pacific NW. I like the segregated bike lanes (ones with the grass between the bikes and cars), very cool idea!!
    I see you going by the Rock...but where did you start from? Queens?, Jersey? Bronx?
    I know the tunnel routes from Jersey, and into manhattan from Tillary and Flatbush area in Brooklyn using Brooklyn or Manhattan bridges.

    After all, bicycles are convenient in New York City. I lived in midtown for about 5 years from 1989, and a bicycle was indispensable to my life. Of course, I had to be careful about safety.

    Not a bad idea! I have lots of audio recording equipment, but nothing I can use easily while bike riding... I can maybe record the video and dub it over at home. My route home is almost exactly the reverse of the route to work. Sometimes it's just one street off because they are one way.

    It was quite interesting to see this movie. As a native Dutch person it looks like a quite challange to travel through all this trafic. The Dutch infrastructure is so different. There is a way only bicycles can drive and they are strictly seperated from the roads where cars drive all over the country. Some parts look very safe and other parts it looks like you drive through all the main traffice, quite scary:)

    nice vid i got some questions though :)
    1.how come sometimes the bike lane is on the right of the road and sometimes on the left ?
    2.why there are so many sewer entries ? i have never seen so many ! its also less friendly for bike riders ..

    • @Apreche
      @Apreche  10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      1) On one way streets bike lanes are on the left. That's because you are less likely to get doored since you're passing parked cars on the passenger side, instead of the driver side. On two-way streets, bike lanes are on the right so that you are far away from oncoming traffic. I'm sure this rule isn't true 100% of the time. You'll have to ask the department of transportation how they decide.
      2) There are no telephone poles. Everything in NYC is underground. Gas, electricity, water, phones, Internet, television, steam, the subway, other trains, and more. There's an entire world down under NYC that most people never see. It needs a lot of entrances and exits.

  • @Apreche
    @Apreche  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    There are plenty of honking horns, but what do you think it's just non-stop honking everywhere all the time? People only honk if there is traffic or people are going too slow. The most common cause of honking is when there is a green light, but someone is still stopped.

    I permanently live and cycle in Bangkok - probably the least cyclist-friendly city in the world. If you had tried that kind of commute in Bangkok, you probably would not have survived. Bangkok has a terminal case of MOTOR VEHICLE DISEASE with very little thought to cyclists (except they are allowed, out of concern for survival, to use the sidewalks). Thailand has the second greatest road death rate on the planet.

    Funny, I was reading down the comments and you said snow and storms doesn't stop the wheels from turning... I live in Germany, and ones a snow storm literally stopped the wheels from turning despite stubbed tires (knee deep snow on a unserviced dirt road). It loved every second of it :)

  • @n1lla
    @n1lla 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Very cool vid. Hope you are still at it. There were some dodgy parts at 23:00 minutes or so and on. Two questions: 1 - What type of bike do you have? 2 - How steep is that grade on the bridge?

    • @Apreche
      @Apreche  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +n1lla It's surprisingly hard to find the grade of the bridge on Google, so I don't know. I can tell you that the hill on the Manhattan side is short and steep. The hill on the Queens side is loooong and less steep. I can also tell you that if you are in shape, and know how to use gears, going over the bridge is a breeze. A strong cyclist won't even care about it. But anyone who is not in shape, or doesn't know how to use gears, will definitely struggle.
      The bike I have is an old Trek FX.

    hey thanks for uploading this video man I am a high school student in roosevelt island and now I know how to commute by bike from manhattan to queens but its too risky to go on the bridge. What I was thinking to do is to take the tram then ride my bike to school. But in the afternoon, I was thinking to get on the bridge but I don't know if that's risky to do or not. But now that I know the course on how to get back home from school.

    • @Apreche
      @Apreche  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Roosevelt Island bridge is perfectly safe to ride on. The only thing you have to be aware of is that the bridge is a metal grating. If it is wet, it will be very slippery. Be careful riding on the bridge when it is wet.

      Most bike lanes put cyclists in/near the gutter (debris) or in the door zone. They're pretty hazardous in general, and streets are better off without them.

    • @ky5069
      @ky5069 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Right, but there is space to make proper bike lanes for cyclists, if gov does some basic things like lane separation at gutter avoidance, it would be much better. They should take some tips from North europe

    Do you wear any special gear to make you more visible to drivers? Also.. what do you do if its super hot and you get to work all sweaty and gross? I've always wondered this.....

    • @Apreche
      @Apreche  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't wear anything special, though my bike has proper reflectors. At night I have front and rear battery-powered lights as required by law. I turn them on even if it's just overcast.
      I'm lucky in that I don't get really sweaty and gross. I wear deodorant like a decent human being, but not anti-perspirant which is bad for you. I sweat less than the average person. I wear shorts and a t-shirt to work. I don't push myself super hard, even on hills, thanks to proper use of gears. Also, while you bike, it's like there's a fan blowing on your entire body at all times. That tends to keep you pretty crisp and dry. I tell my co-workers to not be afraid to say something if I'm stinky. I've asked multiple times, to make sure, and they've assured me it's never been a problem. If this was a problem for me, I would get a membership at a nearby gym and shower and change before going into the office.

    Would a single speed bike be okay for doing a route like yours?

    • @Apreche
      @Apreche  9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Molly Wu Single speed bikes are very popular in the city, so it is definitely possible. But personally, I do not ever recommend single speed bikes. Did you see the guy in front of me on the bridge standing up huffing and puffing with his single speed? All that time I was sitting down riding very comfortably in a nice lower gear.
      If your ride is entirely flat, you might not need lower gears to help on hills. But you will still occasionally need higher gears to go faster. There are situations going home where you are waiting for a red light and there are cars waiting right behind you. You're going to need to get some serious acceleration to safely get away from them when the light turns green.
      There's no reason not to have gears. They just make biking easier.

      As the Dutch say, you aren't made of sugar, you won't melt. :) I rode my bike in a bad snowstorm once, and a funny thing happened... I found that snow and cold do not keep the wheels from turning. Seriously, the only thing that would make me think twice is lightning. Bad time to be sitting on a hunk of steel.

    • @Apreche
      @Apreche  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Kevin15047 I don't care if my body gets wet. I care if my clothes are ruined. If you ride in water in NYC, the filth from the street gets in the water and splashes all over you, fenders or not. I also care about getting hypothermia or hyperthermia. I do not have proper attire for biking in that weather, and it is very expensive. I can't afford to buy enough to wear every day. Even if I don't care about being wet, I can't arrive wet at work. There are no showers or towels there to dry off. And of course, there's the danger. Sure, I can make the bike go in the snow, but stopping in slippery conditions is very dangerous. Even moreso, cars will be very unpredictable and dangerous in bad weather conditions.

    At 12:19 anybody say hello or good morning in New York?

      It is extremely rare for a New Yorker to talk to a stranger without a reason. I understand that to many people who are not New Yorkers this gives us a reputation of being rude and unfriendly, but I can assure you this is the opposite of the truth.
      In a place like NYC there are a lot of people. If I was in the sticks, where another cyclist is a rare sight, I would definitely say hello. Where it is so sparsely populated, the chance to connect with another human being is rare and should not be missed. In NYC, there is no need for that. If we said good morning to everyone, we would soon be out of breath. The only people who do such things are panhandlers and solicitors. New Yorkers recognize such pleasantries as being empty words. Respecting the needs and desires of other people is what is really important, not meaningless pleasantries. What New Yorkers want most is for their privacy and personal space to be respected. We apply the golden rule accordingly.
      If this makes you question our care for each other, think again. If you appear to actually be in some sort of trouble, every single person will stop to ask if you are ok. If you ever actually need any kind of help whatsoever, you know it's never more than a block away. In NYC, keeping to yourself is being nice. Saying hello to everyone is being annoying.

      What noise? Is it wind? The bike tires on the road? Gear shifting? Water drinking? Cars driving? The hum of the city?

      It's the gear shifting, changes in speed requires changes in gear ratio, pretty much like cars.

      first of all you will not get run over if you simply pay attention, and it is not against the law to do, and you can refuse a ticket for it. traffic laws are for cars not bikes.
