    The CASIO CZ Synthesizer from the year 1984 is a very interesting synth. Here can you find the full CASIO CZ playlist with single sound demos, sound tutorials and one synth demo tracks. Enjoy.

      I listened again and the Oberheim sounds much brighter and the casio is much flatter. That said if it were just something you were filling in the background with, I doubt many people would notice or care. You know what really surprised me was the little MT-32. I was really shocked at how great it sounded and how programmable it was with some old software. I had that and an old Roland S-550. I was so mad when a girlfriend at the time just tossed them along with the Apple ][ green monochrome monitor I used with the S-550. That sampler had a fun, crunchy sound. I keep looking at buying another one and the price just keeps going up lol. Same with the MT32. They aren't cheap anymore these days.

    I thought I was the only one in on this secret, LOL.
    I started off with a CZ-101 in the mid 80s. A year later I bought a CZ-1000 (same synth with full size keys & but membrane buttons). Not long after I had two of them. In the early 90s I bought a CZ-1, the top of the line that is fully compatible with the sound library (and I had some great ones) but adds more keys, aftertouch, velocity and more voices. By the late 90s I ended up with two CZ-1s and two CZ-1000s, which I still have all of them.
    For the 80s & 90s the CZ's offered the most bang for the buck for analog type sounds. It was essentially the C-64 of the synth world. The main thing lacking were the ability to tweak knobs such as filters in real-time. One thing I wish other electronics companies would follow was how the CZ-101 through the high-end $1500 or so CZ-1 could all use the same sounds. You could upgrade to a CZ-1 as I did gaining additional features without loosing your sounds.
    I still used my CZ's with my live bands up until only a few years ago. Now I'm running VST's in a laptop with controller keyboards of the actual keyboards I was trying to duplicate such as the Oberheim, Moog & ARP. The CZ line did an excellent job of reproducing many of the sounds from these keyboards reasonably authentic. Real time filter sweeps and things like that was mostly what it was lacking. I leave one of my CZ-1's at practice to use as a controller keyboard. I have a CZ VST if I still need a CZ sound at gigs.
    I hope the price goes up on these as I no longer need four of them. The prices were so low at last check I'd rather just hold onto them.
    For those of you that don't like software instruments, the CZ line was excellent.

    • @christdolphin69
      @christdolphin69 ปีที่แล้ว

      the virtualcz is very nice, and one of the better sounding synth plugins, but i feel like the primary magic to the casio cz's is something in the dac. of course the phase distortion synthesis is responsible for the gorgeous, unique timbres, but something about these hardware versions has a very strong powerful signal, especially in the low frequencies. it sounds so good in a mix and when you get a nice kalimba or wood block/plucky/glass patch going, it sounds like a physical material being smacked with a mallet somehow. incredible synths. i am in love

  • @briandc3519
    @briandc3519 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    We need to SEE synths like these on the stage again. People judged them based on the name, and no one bothered to discover their potential. I used to have a CZ-1000 and I knew what it could do. It just needed to get seen/heard more often, by people who can dig into it deeper.

    These Casio CZ-101 videos have actually helped me to understand mine a lot better. I hadn't touched mine in months because I got frustrated, but that's because all my initialized patches are all janky and messed up for some reason. When I reset everything to more what I'd expect from an initialized patch and followed from there, I got a feel for all the parameters and now I'm not confused about how it works at all anymore. Can't wait to dive into the crazy 8-stage envelopes! Thanks

    CASIO CZ serie can produce very unique sounds. Bells, whistles, bass sounds, brasses and variety synthetic sounds are fantastic, some kinds of organs also can sound very good, and nothing can produce these sounds on that way even closer. When you hear it, you know immediately it`s from Casio CZ! It can be very useable even today if you want to get authentic sounds to your work. And this gears were very quality built. Don`t forget every CZ today are almost 35 years old!

    I recently got my CZ101 for 100$ with a broken keyboard decoder. I brought one to life for just another 3$. I bought it just for making that famous sound of "Koto" bass line by Michiel Van Der Kuy. He used this synth for recording his L.A. Style - "James Brown is Dead" as well where the "koto" bass can be clearly heard. I'll never let it go. This machine is built to last. It does have a very simple and straight forward electronic circuitry that makes the synth to be very easy at troubleshooting if there is a case.

    Because of your videos, I decided to take the plunge and purchase my first synth, a CZ-5000 in pretty good condition. However, I have a couple of questions about your video.
    1. You state that the DOC envelope has "pitch keyfollow 2 pitch 7." I assume that translates to an envelope 1 step 1 of Rate 7, Level 2? Also, from the video, you appear to settle on a Rate of 3, Level of 1. Does that seem correct?
    2. Some of your envelopes don't mark a Sustain or End (such as the DCO, which has a single step). Do I initialize that envelope to the default parameters (using the initialize button), only set the steps you mention, and leave the other as they are? This would default some of the envelopes to Sustain and End.
    Thanks for these great videos! I had a blast programming the CS-80 patch last night as I read through the manual to understand exactly what I was doing. Please please please post more CZ tutorials!

    It would work in some mixes, as it fills the same sonic fingerprint, but it's a rather simple patch and I could probably get that sound out of a lot of boards. Solo as you did, and the differences are there, especially in the complex modulation patterns from the osc's beating from obie and not in the CZ, where it's simulated. I could do the patch on VST's also, and get at least as close on a lot of them that have the basic raw osc sound. But I think your point here is that the lowly CZ has a lot of usefulness still, and for that I'd agree.

    I mean it's similar but not the same. The Casio has a very closed nasal sound while the Oberheim has an open and bigger sound.

    • @lifescansdarkly
      @lifescansdarkly 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I agree, but is the OB8 $6,000 better? Oberheims are incredible, but the Casios are insane sound value for the money (you can grab one in great condition for $400 as of 2020). And they were good enough for Babyface, who used them as the bass on some hit tracks back in the late 80's.

      @@lifescansdarkly Hehe, I managed to snag one for $200. :)
      Although I'm having a hard time with it. I can't seem to save patches that I make. Also, it's perpetually out of tune no matter what I set the master tune at the top right to. Playing a C note on the keyboard produces roughly an F to F#, depending on how high or low I set the master tuning to. Any ideas why? Is this unit screwed? I don't mind re-pitching it in Ableton when recording but it's absolutely useless in my DAWless setup.

    • @Zebselcabron
      @Zebselcabron 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@mikeexits Just press both keys of the master tune to reset and you need batteries inside the synth in order to be able to save in the internal memory.

      The VZ is a upgraded CZ with a lot more functions but the iPD synthesis is a pain to program. I wish me a modern PD synthesizer from casio with the solid hardware of the VZ and with realtime control of DCW and DCA envelope.

    • @TH3_FURY
      @TH3_FURY 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I hesitated to tell you the truth, but yes, i agree with you :
      it's so hard to program a VZ1...3 years ago, I put my hands in it and I have almost understood, but after a few months of non practice I forgot everything and I did not have the courage to start looking again since all this time ! So i have one own pattern (so proud of it) and all others are from the machine..not so bad, but it's so cool to edit a sound with this synth, it's like a fight against Cazio and iPD !

    Credit for taking the time and having the knowledge to be able to do good approximations..do more like this? I had CZs; didn’t like the programming and generally plastic/sterile sounds, BUT have to say if properly programmed it can sound good, one some sounds. I liked the 101 more than the larger CZs, at least for bass, though the midi tracking wasn’t as good, nor was the thickness without chorus. Best might’ve been a VZ rack, BUT they left off the filte approximation, which ruined it for me.

      While I know there is the option to set Vibrato on an Oberheim, your A/B demonstration of "Oberheim" / "Casioheim" depicts a very different picture in Baudline. I've screen-recorded some of your video with the realtime spectrogram going, to illustrate the difference. th-cam.com/video/vmHDIk0xEbM/w-d-xo.html
