  • The first solid revision of the original iMac, the slot-load iMac was released as Apple's recovery actions of the past 3 years were gaining traction. In this video, I discuss the confusing nomenclature of the Mac during this time, the iMac releases leading up the slot load iMac and the new iMac, itself! Expect to hear the word 'aesthetic' a lot. I then talk about the iMacs that I acquired to make this video and the fallacy of the iMac's legacy.

    In Australia, I used to sell used / second hand / refurb iMac G3s from around 2001-2006, and the most popular colours were Blueberry and Grape. Lime and Tangerine were the least likely, with Strawberry almost impossible to sell. So Apple decided the next generation low end slot-load models to be Indigo, which is a blue/purple hue similar to the popularity of the original Blueberry and Grape iMacs. The sales of the used / second hand / refurb market was similar to the sales of the new market, as per your video.

I switched to windows in the early 2000's and haven't gone back. The prices Apple charges is just too much for me to justify. @@Danny-wv8ec that's very good to hear. When they started playing into the new product hype and second hand market by releasing new products missing 2 or 3 key features and then adding them one at a time with each new version drip fed every few months really made me dislike them. When the IPad shipped without a camera or cell modem but the components were on the board but the traces were not connected it really bothered me. The apple loyalists buy the new model every time and sell off the previous model to people who can't afford the new one meaning everyone but the most affluent are always a generation or two behind. It's really gross tactics. Apple could just delay delivery the extra 2 months and release one product with everything they know we need like cameras and modems but they don't. That way they can sell the same product to someone 3 times. It's just gross

    This series of videos got me back into old Macs. I grew up with a blueberry DV iMac, but I switched to windows when apple went to intel (my thought process at the time is that intel macs are just windows pcs in fancy cases) I recently picked up a 450mhz sawtooth g4 (post speed-dump midrange). Unfortunately the seller only put bubble wrap on the front half of the machine and decided that newspaper and packing peanuts would be enough for the rest of the machine. It, of course, was not. The rear foot was shattered in shipping, so I screwed the remains off. I currently have the rear of the machine held up on a small box. The machine was in amazing condition otherwise. (Although the hard drive mounting bracket was missing… for whatever reason) It came with 10.4.11 installed, and I am waiting for the software install/restore disk set that I ordered to come in so I can get classic Mac OS on it (and so I can hear the strange French music) I’m considering maxing out the ram and upgrading the graphics card to something newer with more vram.

    I worked in K12 repairing thousands of G3 iMacs (and several other Mac models) during the early 2ks. Could go on for hours about it, but I really should get some sleep instead.
    I'm not sure about the color 5-pack thing. The schools got whatever colors we sent them, and I don't even know if we were able to chosen what colors Apple sold us via their edu grand programs. We had mostly blueberry or graphite. Other colors would come in for service, but maybe only 1 for every 5-10 of the other two.
    We'd get in 10-50 iMacs for repair every day during the school year. There was only 3 of us and 2 were part time, so our turnaround time was often >6 months. We'd have several hundred of them in at any given time. Best case, only all of the shelves would be full, but often the floor was too. Fun fact, iMacs don't stack unless you put IBMs between the layers.
    Tray loader were the most reliable by far. The worst issues we saw was bad connections between the CPU and logic board (a reoccurring issue with Macs prior), and kids/teachers jamming the CD tray (which was usually fixable by re-railing the tray).
    Slot loaders.... the list of issues they had was a long one.
    The warm smell coming from the CRT vent is likely from the flyback cooking itself, because that was a thing. At least 2-5 a month would have failed flybacks,. Luckily a suitable replacement was cheap. Our board level repair vendor only charged us like $50 a unit if we brought them to in batches.

    • @65scribe
      @65scribe  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Very interesting perspective from the mass-deployment end of things. The 5-packs were mostly for larger stores and distributors. Smaller stores would have ordered from distributors and, therefore, would have more choice of colour. It was probably different for education, but I didn't find anything on that when I was researching it. Thanks for putting off sleep to share that!

    I always noticed something different between the graphite and the other colour slot loading iMacs, but could never quite pin down what it was, but the plastic being completely transparent on the graphite is what's it, maybe it's why i love the look of it so much, as it's definitely my favourite colour of the iMac, and one of the best looking Macs ever made. It reminds me of the last CRT they made, the one with the eMac looking shell that used a flat faced tube with ADC. Always thought the completely clear case where you could see the CRT looked so elegant and cool.

      @@65scribe Yeah I have to say the Sage is right up there with graphite, shame you don't see them as often as the other models.

    One and a half years ago, you got me interested in a generation of Macs from before I was born. Last week, I finally found my first classic Mac: a Macintosh SE. I love your videos, and it is always a joy when you release new ones! Thank you for helping this Gen Z'er fall in love with these old beasts!

      Hi Xenotiic. Sorry for the delayed reply. I really appreciate you letting me know that the videos helped a 'youngster' gain an interest in old Macs, and congratulations on a Macintosh SE! That was the first Mac I ever used and first video in the series. I thought I had maintained a fairly consistent look and style since that first one, but.. no. Looking back, the videos have evolved quite a bit. I hope you enjoy messing around with the SE or just having it to display is cool, too.

    This honestly might be the greatest video on TH-cam. Some of the stuff you have access too, like that vhs of the presentation on your mac and your original DV SE unboxing is mind blowing!
    I still have my DV SE and it’s box from November 99, but I never dreamed I’d see an actual unboxing video.
    Your videos make me want to film the obscure Macs I have access to, but also make me realize I’m decades late to start collecting the footage and obscure side content, even if I had the patience, time and skill to execute anything 1/2 as good as this. (But I probably should post the 4k60fps Mac XL teardown I filmed in July at some point, even with no clever backstory, right?)
    Anyway, thanks for being amazing!

    • @65scribe
      @65scribe  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow! What do I say to that? Glad you enjoyed the old footage and great to hear you have the same unit in the box. I would have never predicted that embarrassingly geeky acts like unboxing a computer on film or recording a QuickTime 4 stream of an Apple Event to VHS would ever be of value to anyone but me. But that’s how I came to making these videos. I made videos I wanted to watch and didn’t care that no one else was watching them. And then over time people were watching them. I’d say put out your high resolution XL video (which sounds amazing) and say to hell with what this 65scribe guy and everyone else is doing and make a video you’d want to see. Anyway, that’s what my experience has taught me.

    The optical drive can be fixed if it doesn’t suck in disks well. Open the drive and clean the rubber belt and accompanying gears making sure to get in the grooves, and carefully clean the rubber drive wheel in the front. I did this to the dvd drive in my sage iMac which would not suck in disks and they would always get stuck, and it works great now

    The iMac G3 is on my list of "Would buy if I had the space and could find one locally in good condition"... I ended up settling on a Mac Mini G4 that I hacked to run OS9 to handle all of my retro Macintosh goodness, so that I could use modern keyboard/mouse/monitors/etc with minimum space taken up, but I've always loved the aesthetic of the all-in-one CRT monitor macs, at least the non-ugly ones! Since your last video, I've moved to a bigger place, and now I theoretically have space for something like an iMac with a bit of rearranging, so if I ever cross paths with one for sale in the future, I might not be able to resist... I think the iMac G3 was the last computer ever made that made me want to own it just because of how it looked.

      @@65scribe Exactly and honestly I can't imagine any other company to be able to achieve such a monumental shift from industry standard x86 processors to ARM based RISC ISA. Apple came back to their own design, which is only possible because of very tight HW and SW integration and unprecedented optimization they can reach because of that. I hope MS as a leader of the PC market will learn something from it as well and start investing more in optimization Windows code with the ARM based chips they created with Qualcomm, however I have a feeling even if they did so, they will most likely never be as efficient and optimized as Apple platforms based on the M1. Apple achieved what they always wanted in order to not look like another PClike company - to be different, you have "think different" and that uniqueness with M1 is now their no.1 selling point.

    (28:21) The theme accent colour also matched. I remember I have a "Tangerine" iMac DV that I bought at a garage sale (missing all of its original accessories), and I reinstalled Mac OS 9, which detected the iMac colour from Open Firmware and automatically applied the Tangerine theme upon first start-up.
