All of them have very tragic backstories, but I think Sanemi, Tengen and Obanai take the top spot. All the others have lost family and loved ones, but unlike Sanemi and Tengen, they did not have had to kill family. I feel especially for Sanemi, who not only lost all his siblings save Genya, but had to kill his own mother, all while being still only a young boy. Tengen probably had it better in that while yes, he had to kill two of his brothers, he did not have to kill his own mother, was already an adolescent or adult and he had his wives for support while Sanemi was alone after leaving Genya behind. And what Obanai had to go through, at the hand of his family no less, the ones whom he should have been able to trust most, must have been quite hellish too.
Shinobu honestly, her whole family was killed, her tsugokos aswell except for kanao. She held the rage inside of her for years and while doing that always smiling😭
I think Obanai , Muichiro, and Gyomei have the saddest backstories honestly. Shinobu started smiling after her sibling’s death. Muichiro stopped smiling after his sibling’s death. 😢

He also saves Iguro and his cousin and despite his father’s harsh treatment was still a great older brother. He also doesn’t hurt humans, truly inspiring. Fun fact!!! The child that betrayed the rest of the orphans is Kaigaku, Zenitsu’s senior that was also trained under The former thunder hashira. And became Uppermoon 6 as a replacement.
Gyomei's back story is very sad, because I have already felt emotion like that. Not being able to defend because of weak body and betraying 'cause of it. It's like I'm also going to be a stone hashira someday
It’s obanai, he lived with the guilt of being the reason his entire family is dead his entire life and hated himself And he stayed in a wooden chamber for 12 years, just about his ENTIRE CHILDHOOD. Imagine how terrible that would be Giyu never smiles because he thinks he shouldn’t be a hashira, and because he shows he’s unhappy Obanai smiles sometimes because he dealt with it
@@akaza3126 he isn't unhappy,he's scared to lose somebody. Obanai lived with guilt,while Giyu lived with survivor's guilt. Giyu smiles sometimes aswell. It was in the gaiden and anime,mainly when he eats his favorite food,aka Salmon Daikyon,and also after the final battle.
I also wanted to add that Giyuu was still just a child and orphan with no parents or family expect his sister tsutako, when he lost his sister because of a demons and when tried to tell the village about that incident they did not believe him and they wanted to sent him to doctor thinking he was mentally ill or crazy for thinking demons are real, like imagin how much of a mental troll that must have had on him and that is something that No one likes it when their feelings get invalidated and tomioka was literally dealing with his sister's death on his own he probably didn't have anyone to find comfort expect sabito also sabito was the only person giyuu can relate to and he was same age as him, giyuu was still blaming himself for his sister death even when he was around sabito when he was still alive and sabito hit him for that, we seen that giyuu still haven't recover from his past but when sabito hit him and tried to convince him to to move forward this was like hope for giyuu a new beginning but then final selection came giyuu ended up losing sabito the only person giyuu trust in world and giyuu also didn't kill single demon in final selection not just sabito death but that fact that he passed without even killing single demon or doing anything same with what happened with tsutako when he couldn't do anything about it like help her or ask for help from other villagers and felt neglected and useless it comoletely broke him not just sabito death but the fact that he couldn't kill single demon in final selection and had to be saved and protected again and when he wakes up he finds himself to pass the final selection like free ticket that's another thing that left him metnally trolled, it made him believe that he is truly weak and useless and doesn't deserve to even be alive even tho he trained and became a hashira which is something not easy for slayers, he still reject himself he thinks that all his hard work and effort is sabito's and tsutako's not his own and due to his inferiority complex which he develop after final selection it made him avoide everyone and doesn't talk to anyone because he thinks he is not worth it, he thinks he let everyone down and isolates himself, THIS IS HIS TRAUMA RESPONSE, he literally let's others hashiras misinterpret his personality and let them hate him, he doesn't do anything about it and this primary example of what inferiority complex actually does to you, other people start to think your toxic and always negative which make them not bother to see your perspective either it ruins your relationships and social life What makes that hashira able to cope is because they passed their final selection and killed a lot of demons, some of them had dream's and motivation and some still have their loved ones around them and people who admired them. Giyuu has none of that he has no one he is all alone with no dreams no friends or lover, no family, no student, no respect from others or admiration and no one to love or be loved by others due to his plain personality and inferiority complex, that's why he can't get through his conflicts it made him sink deep into the abyss, that's why he needed tanjiro help to get through it, he keeps the pain inside of him for years because he knows that it's not worth anyone times or attention The only person giyuu had before he got close to tanjiro was his sensei urokodaki and maybe shinobu as well
I dont think I've ever heard someone explain it so well. His backstory may not be the saddest or darkest but the way he thinks about himself and treats himself is incredibly sad. He doesn't bother getting close to people because he's scared to lose them again. Unfortunately that's led others to think he is arrogant because he stays away from everyone.

Like everyone have their own problems, conflict, personal or inner demons and fears, so people can't really blame giyuu for him being like that, thinking that way of himself and act like that, and when tanjiro tells him to change for sabito and tsutako it was not easy for him because he would then have to face his fears and personal demons As person that can relate to giyuu I like him as character because I can relate to him because I have been in same past like him, long time ago I almost was thinking about committing suicide and end my suffering thank god I was saved and I learned that dying would means that I would run away from my problems, mistakes and past like a coward and that my suffering won't end by doing that, but when I started reading demon slayer manga and when I saw him starting to live happy for his loved ones instead of being guilty of surviving at end of battle against muzan, I found hope something or someone that I can relate my problems with or understood me and his name "giyuu" means in Japanese loyalty and courage which is like symbolism that giyuu has shown towards tanjiro and nezuko and others and when he finally gets over his past he becomes a man and not coward I think that he is one of most relatable characters compared to some other hashiras because people like him, those who have inferiority complex or depression become self loathing in life and mess and stop seeing all the good and the light around the world and they sometimes commits suicide this is like social experiment, but by the end of story he gets over his mental problems and starts to smile and even befriended a guy like sanemi, he is literally like one of those soldiers who fought world wars and survived then developed a guilt of surviving for not being able to protect anyone like their families or friends or loved ones or even die with them which made them not being able to move on in their lives, and him moving on after the final battle was great example of hope for these soldiers and for people who thinks of committing a suicide he is like social experiment, and I find his character very inspiring and hopeful for the people in real life that have problems like him they can also recover like him and be badass like him, because it shows if he can do it then so can you.
All of them have the most tragic backstory I think so far Mitsuri's tragic backstory is basically the normal one no demons murdering her loved ones here, just a heartbreak which every person who has dated someone can relate and then we have Tengen who well no demons but similar to Rengoku no demons killing their loved ones but domestic abuse are present

The least saddest to the saddest backstory 9th: mitsuri (it's sad that she changed her personality and all but compared to the others its not that sad) 8th: kyojuro (it's sad that his mother died and a strict mean father but again, not that sad compared to others) 7th: shinobu (it's sad that her sister died Infront of her but still) 6: muichiro (some people might not agree but it was hard) 5: sanemi (idk how to explain this) 4:giyuu (it was traumatizing for him and he stopped smiling because of it) 3: giyomei (the poor orphans) 2:tengen (SAD) 1: DRUMROLLS PLEASE Obani (it was really sad and made my heart melt hearing it)

As person that can relate to giyuu I like him as character because I can relate to him because I have been in same past like him, long time ago I almost was thinking about committing suicide and end my suffering thank god I was saved and I learned that dying would means that I would run away from my problems, mistakes and past like a coward and that my suffering won't end by doing that, but when I started reading demon slayer manga and when I saw him starting to live happy for his loved ones instead of being guilty of surviving at end of battle against muzan, I found hope something or someone that I can relate my problems with or understood me and his name "giyuu" means in Japanese loyalty and courage which is like symbolism that giyuu has shown towards tanjiro and nezuko and others and when he finally gets over his past he becomes a man and not coward
I think that he is one of most relatable characters compared to some other hashiras because people like him, those who have inferiority complex or depression become self loathing in life and mess and stop seeing all the good and the light around the world and they sometimes commits suicide this is like social experiment, but by the end of story he gets over his mental problems and starts to smile and even befriended a guy like sanemi, he is literally like one of those soldiers who fought world wars and survived then developed a guilt of surviving for not being able to protect anyone like their families or friends or loved ones or even die with them which made them not being able to move on in their lives, and him moving on after the final battle was great example of hope for these soldiers and for people who thinks of committing a suicide he is like social experiment, and I find his character very inspiring and hopeful for the people in real life that have problems like him they can also recover like him and be badass like him, because it shows if he can do it then so can you.
I guess it’s like a circle Giyu has no friends cuz he is depressed and he is even more depressed bc of it :(

All of them have the most tragic backstory I think so far Mitsuri's tragic backstory is basically the normal one no demons murdering her loved ones here, just a heartbreak which every person who has dated someone can relate and then we have Tengen who well no demons but similar to Rengoku no demons killing their loved ones but domestic abuse are present
