    Robert Merrill sings "O Holy Night" from his Christmas album "Hark! The Harold Angels Sing," recorded in London in 1974. He is accompanied by The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Strangely no conductor is named.

    I am Jewish. But can never sing or hear "fall on your knees" without getting all choked up. I have sung John Rutter's "What Sweeter Music." I can never sing "We see Him come and know him ours" without choking up.
    A musical line or chord that grips the heart has no denomination. Music joins many in love, where unfortunately too often organized religion itself separates and hurts.

      And why shouldn't you? Jesus is Jewish the bible says he is a light to the gentiles and further in Philippians 2:10-11 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

    I always enjoy Robert Merrill’s singing. His bariton voice is the best, from my point of view. This rendition was beautiful! And we know that his bariton together with Jussi Björling tenor voice is smooth, and is something that belongs to the eternity of 1st class in opera music.

      "The best" - that is a slight exaggeration, but the voice is really wonderful and one of the best among the American baritones of the generation following Tibbet.

    now THIS is what real, manly singing sounds like. something most voice teachers are afraid of these days and label as "straining", "over singing" or "belting". to remedy this, they will say things like "lighten up", "smile" or worse yet "go into falsetto". with technique like that in the last century, we would have had no great dramatic voices like Corelli or Flagstad.
    anyway, I'm complaining too much, great singing! =D

    It must be the music. The TWO saddest songs I've ever known, and I love them both: 1. Richard Strauss' Ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen. Beautiful, sad, profound. I relate.
    2. Theme from Schindler's List. There's saddness, beauty, and longing. My father is a Holocaust survivor, losing near all his extended family. But once they were neighbors, communities. My father running w/ brothers & friends thru fields in Vilna. All kids of Europe in normal lives. Mamas cooking. All in this music.

    O holy night, the stars are brightly shining,
    It is the night of the dear Saviour’s birth;
    Long lay the world in sin and error pining,
    'Till he appeared and the soul felt its worth.
    A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices,
    For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn;
    Chorus
    Fall on your knees, Oh hear the angel voices!
    O night divine! O night when Christ was born.
    O night, O holy night, O night divine.

    @Ettoredipugnar Let's just say that Robert Merrill was one of the greatest American baritones of all time, and justly belongs in a vocal pantheon which includes Lawrence Tibbett, Robert Weede, Richard Bonelli, Leonard Warren, Cornell MacNeil, and yes, Thomas Hampson. (But not Milnes, whose intonation was too often suspect right from the beginning of his career.) Any "unsung heroes" among AMERICAN operatic baritones whom I may have missed, gentlemen?
