Sound on Atari ST is beyond atrocious for a 16-bit home computer...

Listen to the sound on a 1985 PC compatible or an Apple Mac of the same age, those were the machines the ST was designed to compete with . . . . .

Audio was provided by the same psg (AY-3-8910) used by 8 bits like Cpc,Msx,ZX Spectrum.... they cheaped out and it shows

Actually its a Yamaha YM2149F, similar but not the same. For example it can access more RAM for doing things like playing samples.

Yeah you are right but they're in the same ballpark performance wise

One of the concessions Tramiel made to get the ST in shops as soon and as cheap as possible, to undercut the Amiga. And compared to anything but the C-64 (ironically), it held it's own.

I loved Bomb Jack and Chuckie Egg on the ZX Spectrum. Too bad there isn's a SMS or SMD version.
Blood Money gives me some Transbot (SMS) vibe. Same for Ikari Warriors with Secret Command (SMS), and Vroom with F1 (SMD). And that Super Stario Land reminds me of something...

Well, there is a Sega SG-1000 version of Bomb Jack and that can be played on the Master System, as it's backwards compatible, if you have a Japanese console or by using a Master Everdrive.

I got into the Amiga a bit late in the game, and by then the ST was already on its way out. I never knew anyone who had an ST back then. These days I've been learning more about the system, and I have to say I'm really impressed. Most ST games are surprisingly just as good as the Amiga versions! Shame about the sound capabilities, though. The ST deserved so much better.
Thanks for making this compilation! As bad as the arcade ports were, I have fond memories of P47 Thunderbolt and Outrun.

That's because a lot of Amiga games were ST conversions. Developers aimed for the lowest common denominator. The Amiga got better(-ish) sound and some performance boosts from the use of real sprites and the like, but little else most of the time.

That's a common misconception. Developers aimed for a system that gave back most money. Amiga didn't sell fast enough to have their games developed from the scratch yet in 88/89. Things changed in 1990 to Amiga's advance when it started to gain large enough user base in the UK. That's why they also were a fiver more expensive in the early days. If you don't believe me, read for example Andrew Braybrook's interview from The One magazine's article of Rainbow Islands development.

What's that shooter's name after Powermonger? It seems stunning for the system! I want to play with it!
Atari ST's library is great, in spite of the sound capabilities, that aren't right for a 16-bit system. Anyway, a proof that Jack Trammel cared more about selling than being in the vanguard of technology.

It's just a random selection of games, not a "best of" list or anything like that.
