    Im not as ambitious as Dan and only watched the 10 best picture noms but American Fiction was a pleasant surprise for me as well. Loved it!
    As for the Barbie of it all, while I definitely think no one should be criticized for not feeling the same about a movie as others, as Dan rightly points out, sometimes this is because a movie is categorically not made for you. And I think the flip side of that is, people need to stop calling movies 'trash' or 'not good' just because it doesn't speak to them personally. And I'm not saying this is a men vs women thing, but it would be silly not to acknowledge that for the better part of our history, male centric stories have been the dominant voice in entertainment. So when a movie comes along that speaks to women's stories, and there's a huge rush to tell us that it's a garbage movie and my personal favourite 'Ken was the only good part of it anyway', yeah, I can see why people get a little annoyed. The movie isn't for you, be like Dan, acknowledge that and move on. But don't discredit something just because it wasn't made to cater to your specific viewpoint.

    Society of the Snow and Nimona were a really lovely surprise for me and they've become some of my favorite films of all time. I must have seen each one around 20 times so far.
    I wasn't expecting Nimona to get the nom, not because it's undeserving (If I'm objective, I'd put it third in this year's animated category) but because it's had such an underdog story and achieved a sort of cult popularity without most of the general public even being aware of its existence. The animation style was obviously influenced by the first Spiderverse film although it has its own artistic style, similar to Puss in Boots The Last Wish. I'm really enjoying this sort of renaissance of animation that came after Spiderverse although I'm sort of apprehensive about the big studios having their way with it and ruining it like they did with other styles. One correction is that it wasn't cancelled because of corporate mergers. Disney actually tried to get the creators to drop a lot of the gay stuff (I'm convinced that if they got their hands on it earlier they would have turned Goldenloin into a woman to make it a het relationship) but they were still unsatisfied and then they took the pandemic as an excuse to scrap the whole thing after it was 70% finished. The creators eventually managed to get it acquired by Netflix and Anapurna and were able to salvage it.
    Society of the Snow should have been nominated in a dozen other categories, in my opinion. Most importantly cinematography, sound design, and score. The upsetting thing is that these categories were filled with undeserving films that got there solely on their filmmaker's prior popularity.

    I’ve got this feeling another film, perhaps The Holdovers, will win Best Picture. Oppenheimer got a lukewarm reception to its wins at SAG, as opposed to films like Everything Everywhere and Coda that received enthusiastic applause at SAG. Makes me think it might be vulnerable. With the preferential ballot system, it opens the door to the #2 movie on peoples’ ballots. And I suspect that will be The Holdovers for a lot of voters. It won’t have a lot of #1s, but it may get a lot of #2s.

    • @DanMurrellMovies
      @DanMurrellMovies  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I might be more on board with this had Oppenheimer not won multiple awards at SAG, including Best Actor for Cillian Murphy over Paul Giamatti. I've seen no indications that its popularity is waning amongst any group. Having been to a few awards shows myself, I can tell you that these people are exhausted from running the awards circuit for months. I don't know if I'd take in-the-room reactions as a huge indicator.

    • @Windupchronic
      @Windupchronic 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@DanMurrellMovies Well, they weren’t too tired to give Lily Gladstone a rapturous ovation.
      Awards can be a cerebral thing, but they’re most often an emotional thing. So I often look to what the crowd are reacting to emotionally, and where is the emotion lacking, not in who has won what. That’s often, for me, a more consistent indicator.
      To give an idea what I’m thinking about: 1917. It won the Directors Guild. It won the PGA. It won the Bafta. But the response was always muted. But when Parasite won at SAG the response was enormous. (1917 wasn’t nominated, which isn’t surprising for such a small cast.) That’s what I’m looking at.

    International nominees just make you realize why American cinema is so dominant in the world. The nominees, and Past Lives who could be easily coopted into that category, are so painfully sloooooooow. It is tiring honestly, especially as a european, to pretend I am enjoying all of them. The older I get the more I feel disrespected by the runtime of these slow movies. That is why The Zone of Interest is as good as it is - it is painfully slow, but intentionally and only for 100 minutes. It knows how much is needed to get the point across.

      I disagree - I think this is a very strong crop of nominees. Io Capitano is 120 minutes, and not at all what I'd describe as slow, with several very intense sequences. Society of the Snow is longer at 144 minutes but again, not at all what I would describe as slow, often a very harrowing survival drama. The Teachers' Lounge is the shortest, at 99 minutes, and talky, but not what I'd describe as slow. The only film apart from The Zone of Interest is Perfect Days which is slow and also 124 minutes. But I wouldn't say all of the nominees feel the same.

      @@DanMurrellMovies but they are all "heavy" watches. They do not flow as easily. I admit I did not see Society of the Snow as I've seen Alive and I felt no need to see the same story twice, though knowing the director it surely is not slow.
      But the rest did feel slow to me. And watching european cinema in general it just feels like it does not have any rhythm. And the same director, like Yorgos Lanthimos, would make a crawl speed movie in Europe (Dogtooth, The Lobster), and then a high pace fluid movies in America (The Favourite, Poor Things). I do think it is a culture difference.

    My favorite movie of the year is going to lose to my 2nd favorite movie of the year in the animated feature category. I loved Spiderverse a lot, and it fully deserves the win its about to get, but Nimona... Nimona spoke to me in ways few movies do. I love that movie more than I ever expected to.

    Like others I was going "why would I want to watch white people at a boarding school?" But I really enjoyed Holdovers and even cried a bit.

    Invincible was by far my favorite and most impressive of the short films outside of Wes Anderson of course. I still prefer Invincible with its excellent direction and acting. I think the young actor in that film was the best of all of them.

    Most of these movies were dreadful. They weren’t the best of the year, just the best of December. Oppenheimer is an outlier and deserving of the win.
