I discovered Ed in 2010, during high school, casually listening this song on the radio on my walk home. I wrote the lyrics on the note app as I heard them, fascinated by the odd continuous flow of this guy’s singing voice, by the soothing nature of the song, by the nice rhythmic sound of the guitar. I searched on google and downloaded the song to my mp3 player (I live in Paraguay, so it wasn’t an iPod 😂). I knew that I had found something special, maybe a songwriting inspirational figure for my generation, our Damien Rice. And I was glad to find the song and the artist, as I am a singer and I play guitar as well. I also immediately try to guess the chords and play along with the record that same afternoon. In my opinion this is the best he has ever done, his best song by far. The layers, the storytelling, the inflection on his voice, the simple construction of the music and the production, it all feels like his very raw talent expressed through the whole song. He has written more elaborate, profound or sad songs for sure, but overall I see ‘the A team’ as his opus Magnum. A song for decades to come, the ‘yesterday’. 14 years later, these lyrics hits like that day just the same
