Hey folks! It's been 3 years since I posted this video and I'm glad I get to help many of you solve this problem. It's unfortunate how this is such a widespread problem -- which makes me wonder if we can somehow influence Apple to have a quality program for broken speakers? Similar to the replacement program for the screen staingate and butterfly keyboard problems. Anyway, that might be a stretch haha so for anyone planning to do this DIY fix, additional help here: FAQ Q: Can I use xxx glue instead? Or does it have to be that exact same glue in the video? A: It doesn't have to be the same. Anything that works well with rubber will work. I think any general-purpose adhesive can do the job. However, I believe adhesive that heals to a slightly flexible material works better with the vibration and flexing of the speaker cone. Q: How is the sound quality compared to new speakers? A: It's definitely not as good as new speakers. I think the quality depends on how torn your speakers are to begin with, and how much glue you put. If you put a lot of glue, which you have to if your speakers are heavily torn, it'll sound worse. But, that's still better than crackling speakers. Also, putting a lot of glue will help make the fix last longer. Q: How long will this fix last? A: Depends. If you put a lot of glue, it might last longer. Mine lasted for 2 years. I fixed it again (video link in description), this time with a lot of glue. The sound quality got worse than the first fix, but it's still working until now. Q: Is this worth trying? Or should I just have it replaced? A: If you don't mind DIYing, definitely worth a try! Do note though that the difficulty depends on your macbook model. Some macbooks require more disassembling to get the speakers. Q: Won't Apple fix this for free? A: Unfortunately, no. And it seems like none of us here in the comments ever got to have it fixed for free. Q: How much does a speaker replacement cost? A: You'll pay for the speaker and for the repair service. Speaker cost will depend on whether you get an OEM replacement or a used part from another macbook. Rough estimate lands at around 50USD. I hope that helps! If there are questions not covered here feel free to comment and I'll add them here. Thanks a lot, and happy fixing! By the way, I have made a follow-up video but this time I replaced the speaker with a cheap 10USD replacement speakers. Watch here! th-cam.com/video/qz7K843A6AY/w-d-xo.html
I agree. My 16 inch 2019 MacBook Pro, purchased December 2019, has a blown speaker, creaking terrible sounds even on startup now. I noticed the blown speaker Feb 2021. I do not play loud music through my computer. I play music through HomePods instead of computer. This is very bad on Apple and I agree there should be a recall or other program to replace these problematic speakers. I see 1.3 thousand likes on this video. That implies a lot of MacBook owners with blown speakers.
Under which rock have you been living? This just adds to the list of defects in just Apple's MacBook lineup from 2016 on-wards. I suggest you checkout Louis Rossmann's on TH-cam to find out just how many, bad and wide spread the problems are even on the latest machines. My 2013 MacBook Pro will probably be my last apple machine because of this. That's not to say my current machine has been terrible. In fact it's worked and lasted amazingly. The battery has only started significantly giving out over the past year and a half and the only thing that broke before the speakers was the display but that was because my dumbass dropped it. I just don't have any interest in buying another $3000 machine only for it to break prematurely and Apple to tell me oh you were using it wrong. Or oh it's only supposed to last up to 3 years for a $3000 premium freaking machine. No thanks. Sorry for the rant.
@@ky5666 I don't know which part of my comment gave you the impression that I am not aware of the MacBook quality problems. I also am aware of Louis and I respect him especially for his stand on #RightToRepair, but I think he sometimes over sensationalize Apple issues because a lot of people enjoy and patronize Apple-roasting videos. For instance, Dell's premium XPS line, which I also admire, has a lot of quality problems too but I am not aware of any channel that focuses on this. But you know, I feel you though. My 2015 MBP (the one in this video) has been amazing. 6 years. Only problems I had was the speakers and staingate (which they replaced for free). The reports of problems starting the 2016 redesign held me back from upgrading. But at the end of the day, quality problems always exist in production, it's just a matter of minimizing it and offering warranty and repair programs. This legit worked for me! I just finished putting my MacBook back together and I'm so happy it worked!! The guys at SimplyMac told me it wasn't worth repairing because my laptop is so old!! It cost me less than $20 fix, I bought a precision tool kit and a bottle of black rubber cement. Thank you so much for posting this video, I have the same Macbook in this video.
Hi Bruno! Would you mind translating to English? By guess, I think you’re asking if there’s an alternative rubber cement? If yes, any rubber cement would do. But I would suggest those that are used to patch bicycle tires, just like the one used in this vid. You can buy one in almost all bicycle shops.
I just did this. It worked perfect. The estimate to fix at a place was $200 to replace both L/R speakers. Thought I maybe could buy speakers and replace for cheaper and then came across this repair video. $14 for the tools. Thanks for posting this. My speakers sound new again.
Performed this fix today after watching your video. I used bison fix superglue because I didn’t have the rubber cement. It now works like new. Thank you for this free fix. Useful content!

Earl Malaki No problem pal. I opened my mac yesterday & your solution did work for me. P5 + T5 + rubber glue = saved at least £70+ I reckon. Kudos. Appreciated again 💯
I replaced the left speaker with two different speakers. BOTH still crackled and vibrated. I got curious and plugged in headphones and the headphones sounded normal. I unplugged the headphones, and the speaker was WORKING PROPERLY. WOW!
Worked like a charm for me! I did not have to actually unplug the left speaker plug because the cable will easily glide out of the frame when still plugged in. I used a hairdryer to carefully speed up the curing of the cement.
My speakers were crackling for several weeks..and was gonna buy some speakers on amazon, but came across your video..and tried it myself..my speakers are fixed. Thank you!
Just did this on a 2010 MacBook Pro with a £3 tube of rubber solution and it worked perfectly! The existing surround had crumbled away so I put blobs of cement around the edge with a toothpick to create an array of little bridges (like a tie fighter cockpit). Once the bridges were dry I painted in the gaps with more rubber and force dried them with a heat gun.
This actually just worked. Just googled this because i wanted to check if i am the only crazy fuker that came up with this fix!!! i used contact adhesive the stuff you can use to fix shoes. your finish is much cleaner than mine

Awesome video Earl!!! Fixed my speakers today and couldn't be happier. I think they sound brand new. Thanks for the easy to follow video. You're awesome!
just fixed the "subwoofer" of the 2012 MBP 15" unibody.with "shoe goe" that had been sitting in a drawer for a decade and it works! While i was at it i also unscrewed the high frequency part on the right side and cleaned the sheet now the right side is louder ad clearer than the left. If you keep the stuff only where the speaker is broken the mass to be accelerated will be less and thus the speakers sound more accurate. Regards!
The difficult part is NOT fixing the speakers (or simply buying replacement speakers). The diificult part is getting the speakers out. On the 15" models you need to remove the fans, heatpipe/cooler, logic board, IO board, SSD, Wifi adapter, wiring harness, etc to get the speakers out as they are partly underneath the IO and logic board. Basically to get the speakers out EVERYTHING minus the battery needs to come out. If you are going to go through all that trouble -- and risk breaking something else in the process -- just buy new replacement speakers for $20~30 a set. Trust me, you don't want to do it again.
@@earlmalaki shitty one to be honest 🤭, and well you can notice the difference between the 2 speakers! it's like the bass aint so deep now, obviously, BUT now it doesnt rattle =D
Worked great. I didn't even pull the speaker back, just squeezed the glue between the speaker and the enclosure. It dried in about 5 minutes and was good to go. The speakers themselves were in terrible state, so very surprised at how good it turned out.
I bought a 2nd hand Macbook Pro 2015 for a cheap price and soon found out the right speaker was blown. I got a set of extra speakers and replaced the right one myself using the ifixit guide. Not soon after the left speaker started distorting so i decided to try the glue fix and it worked! i used the kind of glue that is used to fix bicycle inner tubes. In the Netherlands it's called Solution and you can buy it at every bike shop for about 4 euro's. Thanks a lot!
Glad it worked! I also used the same kind of glue in this video -- for some reason I feel like it's the one that'll work best haha I'm pumped about your 2015 pro! I'm sure it'll be great. I'm using one too and it just turned 5yo. I recently did a video on cleaning the fans and replacing the thermal paste. It breathed new life into it :)
@@earlmalaki Ah cool, will have to check that fan vid. I just cleaned the fans with a vacuum cleaner. The left speaker started sounding worse after some time unfortunately so i replaced it. The ones i replaced it with looked different so hopefully they wont turn bad on me again
@@woekers Ohh, I'm sorry to hear it failed again too soon. Apple really ought to do something about this. Just looking at the views that 'speaker fix' vids are getting, it seems this is a very widespread problem.
Used elemers cement glue at my macbook pro mid 2015 and worked perfect. Although hard process because you need to remove the logic board in order to access the speakers.
THANK YOU SO MUCH, this worked so well for me!!!!!!!!! I have a 2021 14" macbook pro (a2442) where the speaker would pop every 20 minutes or so when playing audio which I guess was ok, but kind of annoying. Then came one day when I was playing the song Wait by NoMBe and it would pop every 20 seconds??!! Enough was enough so I searched for a solution and found this video. I was able to use elmers rubber cement + a fine paint brush + a hairdryer to apply thin coats of glue and dry it. I didn't even need to take out the actual speaker components which was a major plus for me. I tested it out by playing that same song on repeat a few times and no crackling sounds anymore :))
Hi there the rubber cement you use is no longer on your amazon link, would you say bicycle repair rubber cement is best rather than rubber shoe cement ?, I wonder which is best for the job cheers:)
"I'll show you how to turn this: **fuzzy sound in video** into this: **still fuzzy sound because I'm playing the video through my blown laptop speakers** " 😄
Thank you so much! Your way is the only thing that fixed my speaker! I used epoxy sealant and waited 4 hours for it to cure. The speaker sound is not as loud as before but the rattling sound was gone. Saved a few hundred bucks doing this. THANK YOU!!!
Thanks for the idea... i did not have this product, so i just put some ducktape on top of it and it works... not like a new speaker but i would say 80% better then how it was. Was too curious to see if it can works.
Let me know how it goes with the RTV. Stronger adhesive will definitely be better as long as it does not eat through the speaker material. Tinker ahead! :)
@@earlmalaki It worked out great. I don't think it has as much bass as it did before, but it still sounds a million times better than when the surround was blown out!
I just wanna thank you buddy and add my experience so someone can benefit from it too. I tried to fix it with a hot glue gun, it didn't work because it muffled the sound way way too low, fortunately the glue solidified and it didn't damage anything so I just removed it carefully. Then, I applied some old liquid transparent glue I had, same kind of the regular school glue and it did worked great, not sure if this will last for too long or not, but I'm happy for now and I just ordered a pair of new speakers from AliExpress for $11 bucks, they may not be genuine or that great but most people commenting seems to be happy nonetheless, thing is the shipment take like 2-3 months at best LOL, so hopefully my fix will last those months.
Thanks for sharing! Man, that's a long wait haha Tell us about the replacement speakers when you finally get to install it -- could help a lot especially those looking into replacing theirs. Thank you :)
@@KagomeH Hi, I did receive them, I only installed the right one because for the left you actually need to take all the motherboard apart, so I was lucky that only the left was cracked. I'll say the quality is just "fine", not great at surely it's way below than the original but hey for around 10 bucks you can't expect much, I'll do the trick.
I have a mi notebook pro that has Harman Infinity speakers on them. new, they are loud and I think that is where the problem lies. These are tiny speakers and Apple and Xiaomi are boosting these speakers to the point that they break earlier than most. not a problem for them as by that time these would be out of warranty anyway. Ordering the zefal cement now. hope this works.
Yeah thank you mate 👍🏼,But i just replace the torn part with new one, that rubber bass pendant woofer were sold cheap online on aliexpress etc for various shape and sizes..
Haven't heard someone use silicone sealant for this fix. But, basing off of silicone sealant's properties (works on most materials, strong bond, flexible), I think it'll work pretty well
I added glue and the rattling is gone but the volume is WAY down. How do I bring the volume back up again? Did I damage something when I sealed it with glue? OR should i give it 12 hours and trying listening to a song again. HELP. Thank you SO much.
Mine just tore up like brittle rubber 2009 mbp sucks this won’t help me I might just take it apart and see if I can make my own replacement surround for the voice coil
I am a bit confused, i got a new speaker in my MBP, but the problem still persists. Could there be another reason? Would it still help to use glue? thx in advance
Hi, on a mac pro (2013 model) i just bought screen fads than it freezes goes black...then i give it slight twist and screen comes back but is still frozen... then fads again.... i know it needs a part for screen, but not sure what part and how to fix... maybe screen needs to be removed etc... any experience with this issue? do you have a repair video on this? thanks for your help..
Hi! Having the same issue, however, mine's Mid 2013 model, is it the same internal setup? Not sure if we have the same layout of board.. let me know. thanks!
Thanks a lot for your reply, much appreciated! I have this issue and the guy that provides a service to fix it says this is only a temporary fix (of course he wants to sell me new speakers...), any idea how long this fix lasts typically?
No problem! Hmm, I'd say it depends on the glue, how good the application was, and how much you use the speakers at high volume hahaha Mine lasted almost 2 years before I had to fix it again, but I imagine it will vary a lot for everyone. Thanks!
I've seen comments mentioning the use of other adhesive, so I guess as long as it can hold the speaker cone and withstand the vibrations overtime then it should work. Good luck!
Nice video but what actually causes this in the first place this always seems to happen I have changed about two pairs of MacBook speakers already cents
Hi I liked your video but guess it won't do any good to my laptop. I opened up my late 2015 MacBook Pro and found the speakers in perfect condition. But still the sound is muffled. I took it to Genius Bar and they confirmed no damage to speaker however they didn't fix it as the laptop was outside warranty period. tried all software tips available online but didn't yield any result. Any tips from you? Thanks
Hmm that's odd. I haven't read anything online about that problem -- but what came to my mind is if the speaker cone is physically fine, then maybe 1) try resetting smc/nvram/pram; 2) check(plug/unplug) speaker connection pins.
Subbed! Maraming salamat! Do you mind if I ask where you got the rubber cement here in PH? Is the same as those bicycle tire repair glue? Definitely doing this first before replacing my speakers.
No problem and thanks too! Yup exactly those glue for bicycle tire repair. Some comments here mentioned using other adhesive ranging from white glue, epoxy, double sided tape etc. and they all said it worked. I guess any adhesive will work as long as it can hold the speaker cone back to where it should be. As for where to buy: almost all bicycle shops have this.
Safer, maybe. Practical, not really as the glue is cheaper and available in nearby stores (no more shipping cost, unlike rubber spare part), and works pretty well. And I actually didn't know that there are spare parts for speaker driver cones/rubber/etc for speakers this small until one viewer commented that he bought one from ebay and it worked pretty well for him.

An excellent demonstration on how to fix Macbook speakers!
Worked great. I didn't even pull the speaker back, just squeezed the glue between the speaker and the enclosure. It dried in about 5 minutes and was good to go. The speakers themselves were in terrible state, so very surprised at how good it turned out.
Try to loosen up the screws on the back of your macbook pro or just take them off completely. i did it and it works. hope this helps.
Woah thanks!!
Thanks man! I fixed mine! I saved a ton because of this haha thank you so much!
Glad I could help man!
I also used the same kind of glue in this video -- for some reason I feel like it's the one that'll work best haha
I'm pumped about your 2015 pro!
Thanks. You saved me almost 5000₹. I was planning to purchase a new laptop as apple was not able to provide original speakers
Used elemers cement glue at my macbook pro mid 2015 and worked perfect. Although hard process because you need to remove the logic board in order to access the speakers.
glad it worked out well! this is the 15" version right?
Worked like a charm. Big ups for posting this vid!
Thank you, I used mighty bond super glue.. surround-less but better than no sound or crackling! Macbook pro retina late 2013.
Woah I'm a bit skeptical on using might bond for this fix. But I'm glad it worked!
Hi there the rubber cement you use is no longer on your amazon link, would you say bicycle repair rubber cement is best rather than rubber shoe cement ?, I wonder which is best for the job cheers:)
"I'll show you how to turn this: **fuzzy sound in video**
into this: **still fuzzy sound because I'm playing the video through my blown laptop speakers** "
😄
ah damn hahaha 🤣
This were exactly what happened with mine too 🤣
@@earlmalaki I'm gonna try it this weekend so I'll see if it works 😅
@@JacobHalton good luck! let us know how it goes haha
Thank you so much! Your way is the only thing that fixed my speaker! I used epoxy sealant and waited 4 hours for it to cure. The speaker sound is not as loud as before but the rattling sound was gone. Saved a few hundred bucks doing this. THANK YOU!!!
awesome!! that satisfying feeling when the rattle is gone hahaha glad to help!
Thank you! this works well on my macbook pro. Hopefully it will last.
Thank you. I can fix my MBP's speaker following your guide.
Thanks for the idea... i did not have this product, so i just put some ducktape on top of it and it works... not like a new speaker but i would say 80% better then how it was. Was too curious to see if it can works.
nothing duct tape can't fix huh hahahaha
Thank you very much. This solution worked on my macbook perfectly!!
This solution worked for me!!! :) Thanks for the help!
Great idea! But, I think I'm going to use black RTV for longevity.
Thank you for this video. Question: It was not clear how long the rubber cement should be allowed to dry?
depends on the adhesive. some require an hour, some a day. just follow time on the adhesive's container
Kid said she need a new mac because the speaker is broken. no, no, no, you won't get it because I found this video 😂. Thank you, Earl!
Kid's going to hate me if she sees this video! hahaha glad this helped!
Thank you :)
yeah , did u install the AliExpress speakers yet?
UPDATE US ON UR ALIEXPRESS SPEAKERS PLS
@@KagomeH Hi, I did receive them, I only installed the right one because for the left you actually need to take all the motherboard apart, so I was lucky that only the left was cracked. I'll say the quality is just "fine", not great at surely it's way below than the original but hey for around 10 bucks you can't expect much, I'll do the trick.
Thanks a ton for a great tip! Struggling to find rubber cement here in Finland and wondering if I can use some other flexible rubber glue? Thank you!
Hi! Any adhesive that is safe to use with rubber material should work fine :)
Great vid, exactly what I needed. Thanks!
Thx Man. I used all purpose glue instead and it works fine.
all purpose as in white glue that you use for school because i don't have rubber cement :(
I have a mi notebook pro that has Harman Infinity speakers on them. new, they are loud and I think that is where the problem lies.
Woah I didn't know that there's a spare part for just the bass pendant. Great info, thanks mate! How's it so far?
thanks man!! I fixed it!!
I was about to buy another MacBook just because of the speakers
Incredible! The trick worked on my faulty speakers too! Thank you @Earl Malaki
You're welcome! :)
Hey, can you use silicone adhesive sealant ? Will it work the same ?
Haven't heard someone use silicone sealant for this fix. But, basing off of silicone sealant's properties (works on most materials, strong bond, flexible), I think it'll work pretty well
bro,you just saved me a bunch of money.Thqnks alot.
Nice fix....just 20 mins of time and its all good...:)
exactly my problem, i need to get the tools!
I used an Egg tray and shaped it. , then i just put on double sided tape. Thanks for this video i came up for the idea.
It worked 100%. My MB Pro 2015 is now fixed. Thanks a lot :)
awesome. glad to help!
BIG LIKE, worked like a charme ... god bless you
I added glue and the rattling is gone but the volume is WAY down. How do I bring the volume back up again? Did I damage something when I sealed it with glue? OR should i give it 12 hours and trying listening to a song again. HELP. Thank you SO much.
The same problem on my 2019 model 16inch macbook pro. They said the speaker is glued to the body and hence the whole body should be replaced!
Duude, you just saved me some bucks! Def gonna check out!
Does this work fine with white glue or do I need to buy cement glue
I wouldn't put the glue all over the speakers, just the outside ring. Going to try on my 2011 MBP
Thanks a lot buddy for sharing, i just fixed my left macbook pro speaker and IT WORKED LOL thanks a heep
Happy to help buddy!
I can't tell the difference between the before and after because I'm watching it on a macbook with broken speakers xD
Worked for me! Thank you!
Mine just tore up like brittle rubber 2009 mbp sucks this won’t help me I might just take it apart and see if I can make my own replacement surround for the voice coil
I've read from the comments that you can actually buy a pack of replacement rubber surround -- that might be worth a try.
OMG. Im not very good at this type of stuff BUT i may actually try this. Speakers driving me nuts. LOL. Right now just using wires buds. LOL
Nice one,Man! Worked 4 me!
Thanks!
Hi! Having the same issue, however, mine's Mid 2013 model, is it the same internal setup? Not sure if we have the same layout of board.. let me know. thanks!
Means any silicon rubber must work ? ...Let try one or two I have in my toys.
Thanks!
can I use Synthetic rubber adhesive instead of rubber cement?
Thank for the advice!
Hi Earl! Can I use mighty bond for this as a replacement for rubber cement?
Hi! I think I've read one comment before that had success using mighty bond. However, my opinion is that it's better and safer to use rubber cement.
brother you saved my money too, i used normal glue (fevicol) and it works perfectly! thanks a ton mate!
Liked and Subscribed :D
Happy to help mate! And thanks too! :)
lol fevicol
hehe so nice
Is the fevicol still holding?
Great vid! Does any rubber cement work?
I've seen comments mentioning the use of other adhesive, so I guess as long as it can hold the speaker cone and withstand the vibrations overtime then it should work. Good luck!
Nice video but what actually causes this in the first place this always seems to happen I have changed about two pairs of MacBook speakers already cents
works also with simple white glue
Can i use hot glue instead of rubber cement?
Is the MP shown in the video an early 2015?
yup!
Thank you. Worked for me too.
Thanks, it worked!
You made my day bro!!!
i have the latest HP Spectre x360. it has this high pitch vibrating rattling sound . i just got a replacement yesterday and it has the same problem
That's unfortunate. Was it confirmed by them that it was indeed a problem with the speakers?
I feel like this issue is getting more common these days. Probably a combination of weak material and overpowering output :(
Thanks bro, this saved my money a lot....
Glad this helped bro!
Had to buy Elmer's Rubber Cement and small toolkit .... Ta Da... !!! Works well
Can I use stick glue instead?
THANK YOU! You are a life saver :)
if my speaker connector comes off the board, is it possible to fix it?
As for where to buy: almost all bicycle shops have this.
cant find rubber cement in my area. what about regular elmers glue?
Elmers glue will work but it might not last very long. Others mentioned using stronger adhesive like epoxy.
Thank you. But isn't it more practical and safer to just order that rubber ring?
Safer, maybe. Practical, not really as the glue is cheaper and available in nearby stores (no more shipping cost, unlike rubber spare part), and works pretty well. And I actually didn't know that there are spare parts for speaker driver cones/rubber/etc for speakers this small until one viewer commented that he bought one from ebay and it worked pretty well for him.
Thank you so much!!
