- Episode 32 of the Ancient Art Podcast revisits the lovely discussion of the disembodied with the portrait busts of Roman Emperor Hadrian and his young beloved Antinous from the Art Institute of Chicago. From the 2nd century CE, the larger-than-life marble heads of Hadrian and Antinous exemplify the Hellenistic aesthetics and innovation of the Hadrianic era. We discuss the life and times of this dynamic duo, explore the tragic fate of Antinous with his true-to-life unsolved mystery along the Nile, and discover just how far even a, by all accounts, level-headed grieving emperor is willing to go. To round things out, we'll have a brief glimpse of the history of beards in the Roman world and explore how modern connoisseurship, scholarship, and prejudice will mold and influence our understanding of the ancient world. Let's say, young intern?? The word is LOVER, sweetheart!
You got that right! "Intern" what a clownish use of language.
Literally what i came to say. Thanks.
Exactly what I said 👁👁👄👁👁
He wasn't his intern, he was his lover.
currently reading a Kate Quinn book & this podcast with the lovely statuary of Hadrian & Antinous made quite a suprise! they're both as handsome & dynamic as she describes in the book & I enjoyed your program very much! ! I'll be looking for your other podcasts to add to my listening!
Thanks Jen. You might also like this video about the recent exhibition at the Art Institute of Chicago. Sadly, the show has come to a close.
Love this guy's voice
What a couple :-)
Nice vid. Antinous rocks.
Intern?
Gay lover. That is what it was...
@rahotep101 That theory would have been true if Christian doctrine had been dominant during the Hadrianic period. Pagan morals did not dictate marital jealousy when it comes to husbands having sex with the lower classes or staff. Sabina had no need to be jealous because her husband was not having affairs with aristocratic women which would have disgraced her. It was a perfectly common practice for Roman husbands to carry on with young boys/slaves.
Intern?! Hot F... more like it. lol
Intern? ….WTF! Grow up
Poleduses? Is that's how it's spelt?
My perfect daddy
The word nowadays is boy 👦 toy.
I stopped watching after the word intern...
I suggest an alternative to this mutual love narrative:
Antinous was a slave siezed upon from pubescence in Hadrian's homosexual lust and infatuation. Antinous himself had no say in how he was used for 5-6 years and dare not resist. Antinous himself was likely heterosexual, which would have mattered not at all to the emperor had he even considered the idea that the boy was not interested in him. At last Antinous ended the anal rapings by the diseased old lecher by suicide in the Nile.
Typical homophobic thinking
@@eamonbreathnach4613 Thank you.
An intern ? ..... seriously, your prejudice or should I say blatant homophobia not only stopped me watching but degraded any validity you might have in this video. Homophobia is akin to racism and misogyny, I suggest you gain more worldly experience in life before you continue in your attempts to gain respect.
And how does pedophilia fit into your moral compass?
