Only One Bad Play Call vs Cal? What Did Auburn HC Hugh Freeze REALLY SAY During His Monday Presser?

  • Auburn's Hugh Freeze met with the media on Monday to discuss a lackluster performance against Cal. There were a few rather, interesting, notes from Coach Freeze regarding play calling and player execution. Auburn's defense stepped up second half but with 13 drives on offense and 7 of those ending in three plays or less, it's hard to win a football game. How do you feel about Auburn's season going forward? 🤔

This was 100% a players’ loss. Watch Arron Murray’s breakdown and you’ll see Auburn receivers running wide open with Thorne missing reads and holding into the ball all day. Yes, the O line struggled some, but PT had hands down the worst performance

How about this schematically, he was a great play caller with a complicated system in 2014-15. Now everyone runs the same offense & he doesn’t have the talent that the others do. He is living off beating Saban twice. Malzahn beat Saban 3 times, 4 if u count the Cam yr!!Hopefully he can get Aubrun(spelled correctly) back to 8-4 in a few yrs…..

So now in this day and time the players are making money to play and they earned the right to be critized.

Your incorrect, in we called 15 plays 1 play was a bad play called, don't call that play again,

What he's not saying, and what we don't know, is whether or not thenother guys are seeing the same amount of reps with the same players. If Hank is getting half the reps in practice, and only with the 2nd team offense, then it makes sense that Thorne would consistently perform better in practice.

Play calling aside, Hugh IS responsible for PT’s performance. Good or bad. Let’s be clear, PT is his guy, he chose him, has given him majority of reps and lion’s share of personal instruction.
Regardless of whether Hugh is either a poor judge of talent or has not been effective as a coach, both are on him. Can’t excuse or explain that away.
Also have to come to terms with the fact that Hugh has NEVER developed an elite QB anywhere he has been. He implemented a “Hurry Up No Huddle” Offense that was based more on trick-er-ation than skill or strategy. He caught some teams by surprise, including Alabama. Once the Defense was given time to substitute, however, he lost his unfair advantage. HUNH’s time came and went, just as it did with the Single Wing, ND Box, the Wishbone, etc.
Hugh has been unable to adapt his Offense and also has been unable (even prior to NIL) to either recruit and/or develop an elite QB.
AU boosters hired him for the wrong reasons, because they are obsessed with NS & Alabama. Instead, their objective should have been to hire an elite coach who has a proven record of evaluating, recruiting and developing players. That, unfortunately for AU, has never been and, by current performance, isn’t now Hugh Freeze.

I think Hugh is right to blame the players. They need to be held accountable. Hugh has been saying “it starts with me” for his whole tenure.

Most definitely. Wr open all over the place. Pt cannot preform under pressure. By god let the QBs go live & give QBs same weapons see what happen. Rpo scheme isn’t hard to run. Yes dif routes for dif wr depending the coach. No way Walker white looks worse than pr. Maybe he’s not consistent but he would’ve won that game having the arm talent to make different throws. I can throw harder & further than pt & I’d meet pt on any field giving the $ to any charity & Im 37 & had a torn rotator cuff since about 28

At the same time, he talked about how he's baffled because some of the concepts are simple- if none of these kids are grasping the simple things, doesn't that sound like a teaching issue?
Sometimes a D1 player is slow on the pickup, but when everyone is confused, there may be an issue with the system and quality of coaches

@@nugget5090 PT knows if he doesn’t understand the material. We don’t blame the teacher if the student fails the test. PT needs to be proactive about what his strengths and weaknesses are. He’s a grown man.

Freeze also said Hank nailed the break down & reads before freeze told his thoughts…… key word NAILED. Freeze while @ au has stated Bo Wallace @ OM was never a good practice qb….. proof the best practice qb isn’t the best option. Some ppl are gamers & practice don’t show what they are. Look at cam newton pre games. Only way you can truly see is let the QBs go live. How a qb handles pressure cannot in most cases be coached better.. it’s a natural feel. Go all in with Hank or even Walker. Pt is staring down the rush panicking not seeing the field. Play calls had ppl open. Wide open. Pt has to see the player open but the window closes at this level quickly & he not anticipating the throws or throwing the sec separation starts is his issue especially when he doesn’t have the arm to let it go before hand! Walker & even Hank has the arm talent where processing could be a lil slow or questionable & still make more plays than not.

@@matthewcofield6251 Forget PT for a second, he's not SEC caliber and I'm not defending him. What I'm saying is that Freeze has talked about how *none* of the QB's are grasping even the simple concepts- and same problem with other position groups as well.
I'm not saying all players are blameless, I'm saying when it's across the board that it might be a coaching quality issue. You're right that we don't blame the teacher if a student fails a test, but we do when when the majority of the class is failing consistently

As an Auburn fan I don’t think Hugh did anything wrong for pointing out players shortcomings. It shouldn’t be a habit, and I don’t think he does that regularly. He often takes the accountability and puts it on himself and staff when it’s appropriate. He’s always very transparent, and what he said here was true.
