Loved the comparisons. I love textured paper so for me these are great. One thing I learned from trial and error from using different papers is that using a heat tool helped the tape come off easier on papers that I guess don't have a lot of surface sizing? That's what I do when I tape my edges on khadi paper. Works great.
This video was so informative, it helped me understand why at the beginning I didn’t like Khadi paper at all and now I love it. The first time I tried it, the paper had this strange texture you showed in your older sketchbook and it just didn’t do it for me. Then last year I decided to get a small 210 gsm one like your hardback (only without the hardback which is even cheaper) and I loved it! It was smoother but still, it made my mineral handmade watercolour sing. There’s something about this paper that just bring the best of granulating textured paints, it feels so organic. I also have the logbook which I use exclusively for colour mixing and experimentation, it works well for my purposes. To make it sturdier, I made a cardboard envelope cover and covered it with fabric. You were being modest about your art, your artwork is very nice! I loved the mushrooms, the dark forest scene, blue panda and vases at the end :) thanks for sharing

i LOVE the khadi sketchbooks and i've been searching for someone to review the log book for a while now, it was a joy to see this pop up in my subscription page! the hardback sketchbooks are actually the exact same as the last two soft sketchbooks, just with a hard cover attached. and yeah, the paper can vary in texture a lot, in my 20*25 i have some sheets that are as completely smooth as your newest one and then others that are like your small hardback!

This is anexcellent source and I will keep and refer to. I had no idea it should be handled like fabric until I did some eco dyeing with it. It held up beautifully. I got some beautiful table runners with Camilla blossoms. Now you’ve shown that it is indeed a beautiful paper. I have a lot of it bc I could afford it. I’m making sketch books with Eco dyed papers for the covers. ❤❤

Very nice vlog. I was always curious about the log book and i have never seen the really big one. Nice! I would make a leather cover and i will have a great sketchbook. That the little one falls apart so fast is because it isn’t a sketchbook, it is supposed to be a pad.

It’s FOCUS ON BOOK ARTS conference in Oregon. It’s internationally attended and is hosted biannually. So next Conference will be in 2026.

I use mine mainly for watercolour but as I'm predominantly an oil artist I will be experimenting with oil after a coat of gesso. I'm hoping the texture will work well with my style of work.
Coming to this video a bit late. I love the khadi paper note books and single sheets I have used. The texture does not bother me, and I like the textile look it has. I have an 8x8 inch book like your it has red inner covers rather than your blue. I also have a fives five inch the same. I have hankered after the 30x35 cm book for ages but it is never in stock. I do prefer their single sheet packs though, the coloured papers are great for gouache and metallics as well as more opaque watercolour pigments. They do different shades of white in these single sheet packs, I think there are twenty sheets in each, lots of sizes so you could bind them into a book yourself. The packs are a lot less variable in quality as well, I found the books to be very uneven, you can see this by holding pages up to the light! However This did not stop me e joy ing them. The paper tears beautifully so you can deckle the fourth edge if you want. I use this paper to do cour swatches for inside my paintboxes, and one thing I have noticed is that if it is handled a lot the pigment seems to wear off the surface, this is noticeable especially with coarser ground pigments. I LOVE how the paper takes washes, I want good coverage but not a bland smoothness which is what most hot pressed papers give and which I personally dislike. I like the extra dimensionality of a textured paper. I am going to try the smaller of the two smooth notebooks you show here, if I can get hold of one, it looks really nice. Have you tried the Jackson’s Eco paper? It is really heavy, I bought some a couple of years ago in their sale, but have not really used it yet, it has a very varied slightly bubbled texture, is deckled, and is not very flat, this changes when wetted both sides it dries flat on whatever surface it lies on. I love the way it looks, and it cuts down really well, has a firm feel to it, is double sided…. But I never got beyond a preliminary wash on it, moved house and it is still packed away! It is also made in India, 100% cotton, but has a completely different character and I would love to know what you feel about it… if you have used it…

It's so thick it's really difficult to cut but it's very pleasant to work on. Haven't tested it thoroughly but it seems to handle water very well. I haven't tried paper in sheets from Khadi as I hate loose papers flying everywhere haha I much prefer working in sketchbooks right now.
@@hungryforpaint I have an ancient photograph guillotine for straightening up work done in the dark room, it work really well on the Eco paper. Knives and scissors not so much. I would love a ring bound book of this stuff, it is so nice and sturdy.
@@lindyashford7744 yeah, no 😆 I have a pretty sturdy guillotine as well for cutting watercolor paper for paint samples but it failed miserably! That thickest one is really tough
Yes, I'm aware that you're not supposed to do that. It's not watercolor paper. But it's 100% cotton and I wanted to try it 🙂 Lots of people use watercolours in their Hobonichis and Leuchtturm planners etc, really thin paper, so I was just curious and wanted to see how it behaves since I had one of these logbooks at hand

Can anyone tell how to make watercolor paper?
Ive made papers with plants like cattails Iris daffodils that have stringy leaves. Cut up and cooked. Then beaten in the blender.
