    My favorite part was actually when it ended. Accuracy challenge has an easy fix; add .25 seconds for a miss. That way you force the players to think about each shot rather than throwing pucks into the corners. One miss won't kill you but 4 would add a full second. Breakaway challenge needs to be special. My idea is two-fold: Finally get rid of the shootout in regular season and go to a ten minute 3 on 3 OT and allow ties. Then the breakaway challenge can be the penalty shot challenge and it will be special again; no need for overly long, cringe-inducing skits. The goalie shooting was cool, I thought. The surfboard thing was okay, but it was just a second accuracy challenge in the end. I didn't enjoy the golf thing, but I can't stand watching real golf either. Lastly, the production, as you noted, was terrible. They need to stop the skipping around from event to event. Just do one thing at a time. The skills competition is about showcasing skill in a lighthearted and fun way. There's just no need to try to gussy it up with cheesy skits. Let the skills and the hockey speak for itself.

    • @sqidvishus
      @sqidvishus ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@edited1325 I would too, but the NHL decided people disliked free hockey in 2015. I guess some people disliked sudden death that went two hours later than normal. Presumably that wouldn't happen with 3 on 3 since the ice is so open.

    • @jakeheerwagen8007
      @jakeheerwagen8007 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m only going to say I’d say 10 minutes 3 on 3 and a shootout because ties need to be gone and stay that way lol and also would suck to have a long OT if you played the next day

  • @gavinjohnston8156
    @gavinjohnston8156 ปีที่แล้ว +24

    Far and away, the biggest change that needs to happen is the breakaway challenge. It was fun to see the creativity and skill players had. Now it’s just a gimmick to see who can do the most family-friendly, uninspired skit while eventually maybe shooting the puck. It’s ridiculous. Zegras was great last year because even though it was still performative, it showcased his elite puck handling abilities. Also, bring back the elimination shootout. That was fun

      Unwatchable. Imagine paying $ for this to see the "Star players" who don't even want to be there and you get to watch someone's kid with no skill score a goal....yeah....Sorry hate me if you want, but there's no place for that IMO. Do it at a charity event, but not here. It's been done before and its not cute. Never was. Same for being "inclusive" and having women hockey players. They aren't NHL players. No one paid to see that. It's also a slap in the face of someone deserving who didn't get voted (and probably glad they got to stay home).
      IF you wanna have the kids, let all the players kids play a 5 min game before the Zamboni clears the ice like they do at regular season games. Patrick Kane's superman started the cringe and it's gotten worse apparently. I don't wanna see a goalie not try to stop a puck from anyone.

      Nothing says let’s bring in new fans like an empty arena.
      Not everyone is smart enough to understand hockey. When I was in high school I had some classmates talk to me about hockey because I always had a Penguins hoodie or jersey on. They watched football, hockey should be fitting for them. I asked they why they don’t watch hockey. Every single goddamn time they say “it’s too confusing.” How do you understand football rules but hockey is just too hard for you? There’s nothing to know about it, put puck in net, you’ll learn the rules the more you watch. Let me explain the basic rules as simple as I can:
      Offside, player is across the blue line before the puck.
      Icing, player didn’t cross middle line before losing possession of puck.
      Goal, puck completely crosses the goal line.
      No goal, puck doesn’t completely cross the line.
      Is this really too hard to understand? Other information can be picked up if you just watch a game or 2.
      Seeing how people are reacting to Jagr passing Gretzky’s professional goal record (NOT JUST NHL GOALS) and Ovi getting close to the NHL goal record (WHA goals and assists/points are fucking irrelevant to the topic) I think even hockey fans are too dumb for hockey.

    • @HughJorgan1
      @HughJorgan1 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@thicccheese4007 Good points all around. And the career goal record no one’s talking about (but should be) is regular season goals + playoff goals. Gretzky has 1016 (894 + 122), Ovi 884, Howe 869 and Jagr 844.

    -passing and puck handling skills?? each player at a station. They took that away?
    -the goalie was a good idea but change it to. 1. miss net = breakaway. 2. hit board = 2 v 1 (off v def). 3 post = 1v2 4. in net= 2v2
    -hardest shot . eh. no fun without chara
    -fastest skater go back to 3 tries each with women and goalies
    -add a fastest goalie pull challenge where the goalies have to sprint to the bench fastest.
    -add a 3 v 3 goalie game for fun
    -add a goalie shootout
    -add a goalie passing and puck handling challenge
    -add a referee skills section for fastest skater and even give them a stick.
    THIS NEEDS GROWTH BIG TIME I don't care if they turn it into a Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday event. Give players, goalies, women pro players, referees/linesmen, and fans more to look forward to. This may want me to stop watching skills and only watch 3v3 tourney day, So boring. Why throw it together. Players may not want to be "chosen" next year. They will say "I will pass I need focus on my team and the playoffs."

The breakaway challenge is always boring, it wasnt bad when they had the actual breakaway challenge with it, where they rotated through goalies to see how many they could stop. I just feel they need to keep changing up the game too, having north america vs world was always fun, east vs west aswell. I don't watch hockey looking for hitting and fighting. The best games are usually in the playoffs and there's rarely fighting. It's a physical sport, so yes, hitting is a part of it, but players don't need to take someone's head off or cause someone to be carried off on a stretcher to make it a good game. Sure a fight gets everyone's blood boiling, but honestly, there have been plenty of incredible games that didn't have any fighting and I didn't feel that those games were missing fisticuffs

    • @markhancock6694
      @markhancock6694 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@davidgillies2623 You've obviously never played the game, or understand the nuances of the sport. And, the first round of the playoffs is always the best round for action for the following reason. When a bottom team plays a top team, the bottom team has nothing to lose so they play harder and tougher, with or without fighting.That's why the Leafs are always out in the first round of the playoffs. Leaf Management doesnt understand the game either. Fighting use to be a major component of the game as it kept everyone in check. If a team began to pour it on with goals into the opposing team, the opposing team would make sure the team scorers didn't get too "comfortable" on the ice. It made the game so much more interesting. And you made the point about how the fans get their blood boiling whenever (almost never) there is a fight. Its exciting. They live it. Hockey isn't exciting and more, except for the first round of the playoffs. Viewership numbers prove that. Young kids don't follow hockey, yet the NHL continues to market the game in that direction. And older men, like me, who use to watch just don't that much anymore. The NHL knows it. And they don't know what to do about it. Sad.

       @Mark Hancock How do you expect anyone to read/listen to you when you rant like this? David makes the point that there's a lot more wrong going on in the NHL than there being fewer fights. Throughout your rambling reply, you said a lot of things, but you missed the fact that David wasn't saying you were wrong, but you answered as if.
      You say that hockey isn't exciting without fights. Here's an idea: is it possible that you just like to watch fights? Throughout all that you've said, fights seem to interest (or entertain?) you a lot more than the rest of the sport.
      That "old school" style of hockey isn't a viable way to win the cup anymore.
      I am not saying the NHL is doing well at all. Quite the contrary. Another way to look at what's wrong with the NHL right now is that, nowadays, the players are millionaires on long-term contracts; they don't fight anymore because THEY DON'T HAVE A REASON TO.
      PS. Don't dismiss someone's differing opinion by saying that they've "obviously never played the game, or understand the nuances of the sport". That's a coward's way of refuting arguments.
