Hi Nick, The screen extender, heated grips and more road orientated tyres should have made a big difference on this trip. I started with an eBay cheapie, and after it fell apart replaced it immediately with a Puig one. Wouldn’t be without it now. I went with soft side bags, a sixty litre roll bag on the pillion seat and a Givi Trekker Outback aluminium top box. I found the Givi stuff, racks etc fit the bike perfectly and when I’m not touring the pannier bars clip off, although I leave the top box on because I find it so useful. Thanks for this vid. Looking forward to future episodes 🙂
The screen survived and really made a big difference to comfort, simple mod but really worthwhile. Good to hear about the Puig and Givi equipment though Nick
Many thanks for the comment, pricing is tricky as I left the ferry booking from Harwich to Hook of Holland very late (3 days before), so recommend you take a look at the Stena line website, with all the options etc. I paid £270 one way with an inside cabin and breakfast, but much cheaper if you book in advance. Fuel was on par with the UK in the south of Norway but rocketed the further north I got. I also used ferries between the Lofoten Islands I think in total it was about £50 for 7 ferries (short hops typically). I'll try and include prices in the videos, but as I'm home now, only if I captured at the time. I think I'll see if I can pull together costings though from my credit card bill... need to see how that pans out. Watch this space, but... I hope you can do the trip next year, Norway is stunning but I came across beauty in just about every country I travelled through Nick
I'm not a Facebook user as such but have posted a summarised version on "BikingTravels - Share" group. I don't know if you can access it. BUT, there are quite a few motorway / highways I'd avoid if I were going to do it again, so use it just for a rough idea. facebook.com/groups/211621371837271/files/files Enjoy your trip!!! Nick
No I didn't BUT I'm going to the Pyrennes in a few weeks on my Street Triple R and needed a CritAir sticker that cost a little under 5 Euros online. Not sure how widespread it is becoming. Nick
Great content! Just wanted to ask a few questions regarding the bike. 1. How does this compare to the other Japanese bikes in this segment? Versys 650, Vstrom 650? 2. I heard that it does struggle to maintain a high enough speed on the freeway (70-80mph) in a rev range where the bike feels comfortable. Is this true? 3. Have you had any issues with the bike? I know maintenance won't be expensive because Japanese bikes are fairly reliable. Just on the nitpicking side of issues? Thanks! Love the content!
Hi, many thanks for the comment and questions. I'm afraid I've not ridden other bikes in the segment and bought this one based on reviews and my budget so I'm not going to be much help I'm afraid. I downsized from a CBF1000 to ensure I didn't speed through places and I wanted to to slow the pace down. This included avoiding major routes where possible but having a bike capable where necessary. Personally, I'm comfortable with the performance of the bike at legal speeds although there is some vibration in the foot pegs at 70 - 75 its not bad and yes, the engine buzzes more at those higher speeds than a larger capacity but meets my needs. I know there are some who have changed the gearing to enable less revs at higher speeds but as I mentioned, I'm happy enough with the overall performance. I'd caveat this... if the majority of my trips were on motorways / freeways etc I would look elsewhere - again just my personal perspective. Regarding maintenance and reliability, I'm please to say it has been ultra reliable, The bike is now 18 months old and I've only covered 27K Km so it is still quite "young", but is without complicated electrics so is simple and parts are shared with the other CB500s so should be easy to get hold of. I've needed to replace tyres, chain and sprockets and at the service in Estonia I needed to replace the rear brake pad. Otherwise all is well Hope I've given you something to answers your questions but I don't want to pretend I know more than I do Nick
Thanks for the comment and question, I use a Garmin Zumo XT which I'm very pleased with. I've listed all the gear and equipment I use in the description including the mount which is a Rally Raid billet mount if that helps Nick
looking forwards to seeing the trip, im doing the same next year, 8 weeks booked off work, all lieu days that need to be taken. can you share your GPX files? or any points of interest youve planned for. im just in the process of planning the route, i'll be doing a mix of hotels and camping, but the ferry is booked for july. it will soon come round.

BUT, there are quite a few motorway / highways I'd avoid if I were going to do it again, so use it just for a rough idea. facebook.com/groups/211621371837271/files/files I highly recommend spending some time in Copenhagen, Oslo, Stavanger and Bergen, but most importantly enjoy the ride, quite a few people I met were rushing to get to Nordkapp and home again within 10 -14 days... it is a long way North! Nick
@bikingtravels thanks for the reply, i'll check them out, i'm in no rush as ive done the long days at 70mph trips watching the world wizz by and seeing nothing. This trip will feature many more stops and a much more relaxed style. i think 2 weeks to get me to nordkapp then 4-5 weeks home@@bikingtravels
This should be a very enjoyable series of videos. The longest journey starts with the smallest step. How did you manage to get 7 weeks off to do this trip? Btw your map at the end has the River Blackwater east of Chelmsford labelled as the North Sea.
Many thanks Alex. 7 weeks off... I'm now retired and luckily have a very understanding wife! Map at the end... the "wonders" of Garmin Basecamp I'm afraid! Nick
Just joined here….really great, I like your gentle approach to things…one question, how is your bike kept from not falling over, straps etc and bike protection….it look a bit chaotic as to where you had to go to park up, I live in Jersey and look forward one day of taking my bike over to France, just wanted a bit of a heads up as to the mundane parking up and what the procedure is….safe riding and I look forward to your big adventure and will check out you previous one…..cheers Karl….my bike by the way a 2023 Honda NC750XDCT…
Many thanks and welcome aboard. On the ferry they provide straps, usually these go over the saddle with a cushion of sorts, strapped down to the yellow clamps or cables you can see on the floor. I tend to use the straps through my engine bars (details of the kit I use are in the description), you can see the bikes in front (around 8:49 straps). Sometimes the crew strap down other times it is up to you, just follow what the other bikers are doing. Enjoy your trip when it arrives! Nick
@@bikingtravels hi Nick, thanks very much for the info, I often wondered how bikes travelled on ferries….I hope in a few years time to take the short trip across to France….I am returning to riding after 42 years…yep long time, sadly when 19, a drunk driver ended my RD250LC, and almost me…but that was then, now just re started my riding and I love it, only one gripe with my bike, think the bike could do with a twin disc up front…apart from that, it’s just brilliant, looking forward to watching all your videos, thanks for sharing, safe riding and travels..cheers Karl
Really sorry to hear about your accident, sounds really nasty. I also had a long gap (25 years) returning in 2010. Just take it easy, roads are more crowded now and bikes and cars faster (don't mean to patronise). Great to hear your experience hasn't put you off. Enjoy the NC750 I've heard good things about it. Nick
Many thanks for the question, I use a Garmin Zumo XT and a combination of Garmin Basecamp (screenshots taken from this app) and Google maps. I've also listed other info in the description including the mount I use that may be of use. Nick
Hi Nick Got a question to you😮 How do you find the rear brake? as someone who has put the mikes in, I ask as I don’t think it’s fit for purpose, I’m tempted to change the pads, but as my bike is only 4 months old, I’m wondering if it will affect my warranty, Will be following you again
Many thanks for following, and the question. My rear pads were worn out at 25k KM, I didn't have any problems with them but surprised they wore so quickly. Applying front and rear work well for me so I've not really been aware of the rear brake, probably worth getting it checked under warranty if you're noticing issues, you may just be unlucky and it needs adjustment? Good luck with it Nick
Harwich/Hoek de Holland overnight is such a wonderfully civilised way to travel to Europe compared to flying these days. Yes you have UK immigration services abusing us legal travellers like we’re the problem but I found it lovely when I was commuting weekly to north Germany for work.
Ooh, that's quite some commute, in my book at least. Yes, the crossing was uneventful which is what I was hoping for as I'm not great on the water and was a great start to my trip Nick
The right decision in my opinion, especially for a laden 500X used for touring. In my opinion the original gearing is what makes the 500X perform so much better than people expect.
Many thanks for the comment and observation. The gear I took was for comfort so yes, a bit bulkier than it could have been (3 person tent, self-inflating sleeping mat, collapsible chair), but apart from the emergency first aid kit, puncture repair kit, small tyre pump and tools (other than for chain adjustment) I used everything many times over the 7 weeks and was comfortable the whole way. So, yes, I agree with you I could have taken smaller and less but I traded that for comfort. In the end it all comes down to personal choice. Nick

The screen extender, heated grips and more road orientated tyres should have made a big difference on this trip.
Good to hear about the Puig and Givi equipment though

Just found your channel Nick. You've done some great rides and tours. Really looking forward to the next episode in the series. Stay and ride safe.
Welcome aboard! I hope you enjoy the journey

Intend to do Norway next year, be interested to know how much things cost as you go ( ferry etc)
I hope you can do the trip next year, Norway is stunning but I came across beauty in just about every country I travelled through
Nick
have you got a gpx for this whole route? would love to take a look, trying to get 4+ weeks off work is gna be fun lol
I'm not a Facebook user as such but have posted a summarised version on "BikingTravels - Share" group. I don't know if you can access it. BUT, there are quite a few motorway / highways I'd avoid if I were going to do it again, so use it just for a rough idea.

Wondering if you needed some kind of emmisions certificate to land in Europe? I know the 500x is latest standard
No I didn't BUT I'm going to the Pyrennes in a few weeks on my Street Triple R and needed a CritAir sticker that cost a little under 5 Euros online. Not sure how widespread it is becoming.

Otherwise all is well
Hope I've given you something to answers your questions but I don't want to pretend I know more than I do
Nick
Very best of luck , apologies if you’ve been asked this before … what satnav are you using
Thanks
Thanks for the comment and question, I use a Garmin Zumo XT which I'm very pleased with. I've listed all the gear and equipment I use in the description including the mount which is a Rally Raid billet mount if that helps
Nick
@@bikingtravels excellent thanks , enjoying the channel and your understated delivery .
looking forwards to seeing the trip, im doing the same next year, 8 weeks booked off work, all lieu days that need to be taken. can you share your GPX files? or any points of interest youve planned for. im just in the process of planning the route, i'll be doing a mix of hotels and camping, but the ferry is booked for july. it will soon come round.
Sounds great!!! I'll need to get back to you ref GPX and other info... rubbish signal where I am at the moment. Should I expect better 16 miles from central London??? 😉

I highly recommend spending some time in Copenhagen, Oslo, Stavanger and Bergen, but most importantly enjoy the ride, quite a few people I met were rushing to get to Nordkapp and home again within 10 -14 days... it is a long way North!

Nick
What gps display you are using? & Which map app ?
Many thanks for the question, I use a Garmin Zumo XT and a combination of Garmin Basecamp (screenshots taken from this app) and Google maps. I've also listed other info in the description including the mount I use that may be of use.
Nick
Hi Nick
Got a question to you😮
How do you find the rear brake? as someone who has put the mikes in, I ask as I don’t think it’s fit for purpose, I’m tempted to change the pads, but as my bike is only 4 months old, I’m wondering if it will affect my warranty,
Will be following you again
Many thanks for following, and the question. My rear pads were worn out at 25k KM, I didn't have any problems with them but surprised they wore so quickly. Applying front and rear work well for me so I've not really been aware of the rear brake, probably worth getting it checked under warranty if you're noticing issues, you may just be unlucky and it needs adjustment? Good luck with it
Nick
What do you find is wrong wit it? I find the rear brake on my bike spot on.
Yes, the crossing was uneventful which is what I was hoping for as I'm not great on the water and was a great start to my trip
Nick
The trip was 123 miles and you only recorded a few seconds on the road???
😉 I hope you enjoyed the other 12 minutes after the first few seconds!
Nick
Did you change the front sprocket? 16 of 15 ?
Thanks for the question, no, I left it as standard as I'm happy with the gearing.
Nick
OK 👍!!! Keep going, my friend !
The right decision in my opinion, especially for a laden 500X used for touring. In my opinion the original gearing is what makes the 500X perform so much better than people expect.
Cant believe you don't use premium unleaded would never put that e10 shit in my bike.
Thanks for the observation and your thoughts
Nick
Sai cavartela
Grazie mille
Many thanks
Nick
Your carrying way way too much stuff
Many thanks for the comment and observation. The gear I took was for comfort so yes, a bit bulkier than it could have been (3 person tent, self-inflating sleeping mat, collapsible chair), but apart from the emergency first aid kit, puncture repair kit, small tyre pump and tools (other than for chain adjustment) I used everything many times over the 7 weeks and was comfortable the whole way. So, yes, I agree with you
I could have taken smaller and less but I traded that for comfort. In the end it all comes down to personal choice.
Nick
