  • Why do autistic people cover their ears?
When we cover our ears that's usually to protect ourselves.
We can be very sensitive to sound and so it can hurt sometimes.
Our ears may not be more acute than yours but our brains can process sound differently.
This means some sounds can feel really loud.
This is called Sensory Processing Disorder.
    Sensory Processing:
Sensory processing disorder means we can become overloaded by sensory information such as noise and vibrations from music, traffic, and voices.
Sensory overload can lead us to melt or shut down; which are extreme stress responses where we lose control of ourselves and that can be terrifying.
    How can you help?
    You can help us by:
    - reducing the noise and sensory input
    - using noise-cancelling headphones
background noise to help mask some of the unpleasant noise
    - quiet spaces and quiet hours
recognise our triggers so we can avoid them
be understanding when we feel overwhelmed

I can play music really loud - in the car or through my headphones - and it’s great. Can’t cope with lots of people talking at once and I can’t cope with someone having a conversation talking over the tv or radio.

If the radio is on I either struggle to speak at all or talk really loudly.

Because our brains run so fast that any sort of loud noise, humming from a light, a fan off kilter, anything that's off, we're going to notice right away. We scan the environment through all our senses just by standing there. It is extremely overwhelming

when i was younger i couldnt get on loud rides at amusement parks bc the noise and i think i would cry. i also couldnt be there for fireworks bc it was so loud i would cry and scream. one time when i couldnt hide in a store at disney world bc they were closing, my dad just took me to the back of the place and told me where the fireworks were being done and how far they were from us, but regardless i screamed and cried. i really liked how fire works looked i just couldnt bear the noise. now im able to bear the noise better which is nice. i still hate the noise, but its more manageable now. in middle school i would leave the classroom bc sometimes things got too loud and my ears would just feel weird almost like a pinch that didnt necessarily hurt, and when i would be in the hallway sitting down, people would just say "taking ANOTHER break? i might start using that excuse" ive never been diagnosed with autism but i think i have some sensory issues bc i have gad.

Interesting to see someone mention vibrations, at last. I feel like that's something that's often missed. I don't know if it's "correct", per se, but I feel like I can "feel" the vibration of certain sounds; they almost become physical sensations to me.

  • @chorrellpique4057

Strangely enough sounds that really bother me are things like a ticking clock, humming (the mechanical kind, not necessarily a person), a leaking tap, etc. Loud music doesn't bother me, I welcome it even. For me it's a way to drown everthing else out. Work place discussions during which everybody is talking at once are highly overwhelming, but everybody shouting in a nightclub? I'll be fine. It's probably because for work I know I have to understand what's being talked about, yet I can't filter it.

I think I have something different, 3 of my family members snore so loudly they can be heard in every room of the house. Then they got a Pug who wheezes the same frequency. Now our kitchen stove produces said frequency. It’s very loud, no one else hears it but me and it causes my ears to bleed. No one takes me seriously...

Not very well, got into fight with family over wanting to kick the dog out of the house for a few hours. These days I trap myself in my room, wearing soundproof headphones, while I have the TV on to help cancel their noises. Other members of the family started to taking me seriously because the cat also hears it and tries to avoid the noise. Nothing’s really changed that much but that cat’s in my room when it can be. If I can help it, I avoid coming home as long as possible. Thankfully the family member that actually cares kicks during the day but it’s still impossible to sleep at night.

I was diagnosed in mid 2020 I cover my ears when there are multiple noises eg TV and someone talking or TV and a radio at the same time but for some reason I love loud music and exhaust noises from cars and alot of other loud noises don't really bother me ither my worst one is multiple different people talking at once in large crowds.

When I was in 1/2nd grade, I was really sensitive to people making noises like whistling, making noise with their mouths, Shushing, and I oftenly scream or yell people to stop. But they wouldn't listen. In 3rd and 4th, I was still sensitive to noises to the point I threw some meltdowns. In 5th grade, It was somewhat better, I didn't threw tantrums, but I still felt irritatable around people, but I didn't yell. In middle school, I still got annoyed by people, to the point I sometimes have lunch by myself, but in 8th grade, no one annoyed me at all. And recently in 9th grade in high school, most of the time, I felt okay. But sometimes (while no tantrums or meltdowns) I got angry when people annoyed me. Thanks for listening

I cried from singing, screaming, fighting, and angry people and things of the world.
Like this year of 2020, I really hated the movie "Frozen 2" because everybody says it's better than the first movie, "Frozen," and they are very wrong. The movie was terrible because of the tone and the characters tended to have a reckless behavior and they are so unlikable, different than their likable happy behavior from the first movie! It's so offending and it breaks my heart!

I have found some earplugs which do block sound really well. They have titanium cores but are soft to the touch. Some people recommend musicians’ earplugs. These do not exclude noise, but change the way the ear receives it. You hear everything but they appear to ‘turn down the volume’.

I find it worst when there is noise in or around my home environment, to me it hurts my ears and gives me a headache and causes me to reeled stressed and anxious. I like quiet at home as it makes me feel safe so I don’t cope well with screaming/ loud children, barking dogs, doors slamming and vibrations. It’s obviously worse when there is more noises. I’m undiagnosed but pretty sure I have high func Aspergers. A lot of people don’t understand why I can’t just “get over the noise”

It depends. Overstimulation, loud… too many noises at once is when I can’t focus on one thing is overwhelming. As a parent that has autism, sometimes it’s to block and concentrate on what I’m reading or trying to do. If it’s something I need to do with my hands, covering ears is a way to block out and be patient to continue what important task I was trying to do.

    • @laurensmith4617
      @laurensmith4617 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

Concentrating or blocking out excess sights or reducing sight overstimulation can work the same way only with shielding peripherals or using tracing techniques. Sometimes both are needed to be blocked.

The most annoying part about this is that I’m still in school, so I end up having to cover my ears quite a lot in lessons because of people talking around me.
