    I have no home grocery/pizza/fast food delivery. I have to drive one-half an hour each way to a town. I have no choice. We have to go out. Our reality is quite different than big cities.

      People in cities have to go out to. Turns out there are a lot of essential workers. Grocery delivery is also extremely backed up right now and I need to get prescriptions. It's no excuse for the people going to church, having family easter gatherings etc

    I live in N.D. We have the second lowest infection rate behind only Hawaii. We take it very seriously. We are not on total lock down mainly because our state is sparsely populated. People will probably go fishing alone or with someone they are living with. That being said, our churches do not have services, people are only going out for groceries and wear masks and gloves. We practice the social distancing. We are keeping apart from our families because we don't want to spread the virus. We have an older population and we look out for each other.

    I live in a rural county in the northeast US. ( pop. of my town is 630) For the most part, people here are doing an excellent job of all types of social distance, gloves, hand washing and especially masks. It makes me happy to see it, the social pressure to follow the rules, and it's almost always seen as protecting our elderly population.

    Kinda make it sound like rural people are dumb yokels. But one thing is for sure in my rural community that I have no doubt is present in every rural community, we know our community will have each others back... somebody needs meds picked up... gotcha, somebody ran out of TP or diapers... gotcha.... leave the money on your porch and the needed item will be left on your porch. 99% of us hunt, fish, have beef, pigs, chickens, gardens... know how to forage in the woods... so we will not starve... and the 1% who do not do those things benefit from the ones that do... we all know each others names and take it as a personal responsibility to look out for each other. When I lived in the city none of the neighbors knew each others names, nobody took the time or the effort to get to know people outside your circle of friends. Of the two... would take the rural community over the city any day of the week.

      The problem I have with this is that rural people may be friendly in their community, but the way they vote directly impacts me negatively. My esophogus doesn't work and our healthcare system is destroying me. But they don't care about people they dont know.
      I may not have neighbors im friends with here but at least when it comes to policy I think about other people's situations. Ultimately I dont care if you are polite to me or make me dinner. If they vote against me having healthcare, they need to quit pretending they're nice people.

    This exactly what is wrong with the American classes particularly in the media. It took a Gallup poll to figure out that responses or urban and rural populations might react differently to this? The existential realities of the two groups are quite different. There had better be some differences in reaction. This is just another social critique of rural populations and and an attempt to justify urban condescension of those who live in flyover country.

    in the wide open mountain west you may live 20-30 miles to the nearest town which may be only 300-600 people..and you go to town once a week for your mail gas groceries bank etc...so your risk of exposure is quite low so you're not likely to take a lot of precautions....and if that town is far removed from tourist traffic that lowers your concerns even more...school closing might be the only real change to your lifestyle..

    This is a flawed analysis, reminding us of cell phone data claiming rural folks ignoring sheltering in place--I live in a county that is 80 miles long by 40 miles wide--it has one major grocery store, no home delivery option, and if can't be sourced locally, goods require a 120-140 mile round trip to acquire. Our store hasn't had tiolet paper in over two months. Mobility, saturation, and distance is not factored into this.

    • @massivereader
      @massivereader 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not likely. As long as large public gathering are out of the question, it simply won't ever affect rural areas as much. They don't typically depend on restaurants. They don't use public transport, or even Taxi's or Ubers that much. Their workplaces are significantly less population dense. As long as bars and restaurants are kept closed, schools and team sports are shut down, banks and churches are kept drive-up only, funerals and weddings are the only big exposure.
      Make mask required at work, maybe black masks for funerals and white ones for weddings as a requirement and the R0 increase from them is insignificant.

    No one is talking about the ETHNIC differences in terms of infection and survival rate, except to push the same rhetoric about "racial disparity" and socio-economics. What gives the lie to that knee jerk framing is the fact that the virus spread differently EVEN AMONG "WHITE" communities in Europe with SLIGHTLY different ethnic background, eg, in Switzerland where the French and Italian cantons were hit the worst, while the German cantons had a minimal rate of infection. You see the same difference between Germany and the Scandinavian countries, compared to other EU states like Spain. In the US, the most ethnically diverse areas have the most (and more severe) cases. Obviously, differences in genetics determine different immune responses to a virus, just like certain auto-immune disorders only affect people with certain combinations of genes, and those combination may be ethnically associated... but we can't talk about ethnic differences except when we try to fit the conversation into an "X group is doing worse because of racism" box. What a joke our society has become.

    The only chance is for somewhere one of Bernie's beleivers standing up and starting a new progressive party . A choice of Biden or Trump will elect Trump . Biden can barely remember what state he's in .

      Or perhaps the Dem majority cities reacted in ways that increased the danger, like Pelosi and De Blasio encouraging citizens to mingle even as late as March 19, while Republican areas prepped earlier as a way of life - Saving for a rainy day.
