    Interesting interview. I worked at Mark Levinson Audio Systems for three years, beginning in late 1974. Mark's personality was definitely the primary force behind the company's success.

    Everyone here will probably get on my case about this but way back when the Thiel CS 3 was introduced I heard it paired with a Levinson amp, preamp, and Transparent cables...man what dry playback system, it was way to clinical. If I'm not mistaken the Levinson amp had a regulated power supply for the input board and a regulated supply for the output stage and I'm thinking it's so tightly regulated that I feel like I'm listening to a piece of lab equipment.

    The Cello Pallette sounds intriguing. Six bands for a graphic equalizer is minimal but for a parametric equalizer is a lot. Hmm...actually looking at the thing, it's evidently a six band graphic equalizer with knobs instead of sliders. What's intriguing is the phase control, and the blend setting on the equalizer. I guess the blend setting is what makes the equalizer screwup-proof. Phase seems like one of those shadowy things in audio that may or may not have an effect; of course in its extreme form if one speaker is out of phase with the other in stereo pair it's pretty obvious, but there are more subtle ways in which it can manifest itself.
    It's a beautiful piece of equipment, all right. If I had a net worth of a bill, I'd definitely put out a small fraction of it on such a nice preamp. But I wonder if the parametric equalizer shouldn't be looked into a little more as an audio problem-solver.
    From what I hear, there's also a difference in the era of the recording. LP's made after 1980 tend to be brighter than those before. Either that, or it's just that the 80's vintage records I have are less damaged by crappy styli than the older ones.

I have a old McIntosh integrated amp , a pair of b&w 603,and hifiman he1000v2. recently want to buy a pair of harbeth shl5 with a preamp with headphone amp. currently I use Chord Mojo to drive he1000v2. He sure knew what he wanted. And he never gave up many times that was not the right thing to do. I’m going to let you know that Mark was able to convince the federal government into allowing him to purchase two Bobcats and keep them in his New York City apartment with the big lie that he would take them into the New York City schools to teach children about wild animals. and What happened was both Cats died in his care within three months. That’s a little too driven for any person’s needs or supposed it needs.I know because I owned the pet supply store that he visited every day to ask my advice and we became friends until I realized how crazy he was and then I hid from him.

    • @connorduke4619
      @connorduke4619 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Perhaps he you kept giving him advice, those Bobcats would still be alive today?

    • @stimpy1226
      @stimpy1226 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I didn't know anything about Bobcats and I told Mark that from day one. I had a reputation in New York City as being the most holistic and humane pet supply store in NYC. Mark was a good researcher and had moved into the neighborhood. My advice to Mark was to give those cats to a zoo as soon as possible and in the meantime feed them raw meat diet. He just kept stopping into the store to say hello as he was walking through the neighborhood and we got into all types of different conversations. He was a very compelling and charismatic guy. If it wasn't for the Bobcats, I would've really enjoyed spending more time with him. But instead, I started to separate myself from him because of what he had done. When those cats guide, I felt devastated but with a person like Mark who doesn't want to listen to what someone wiser in the subject would say there is nothing that can be done. Perhaps that's why he's so famous and comes out with all kinds of new lines of outstanding audio equipment.
