glad to know i'm not the only one who struggled with the handle. but..you did get it wrong in the EXACT same way i did. if you look inside the basket, instead of on the outside... you'll see two tiny spots where the metal bar sticks out. you're supposed to stick them through those instead. and if you do it that way, you'll see that you can now use that hook on the outside to set the basket on the top of the fryer to let it drain like they do in restaurants.

I purchased this in Mar 2021 and I absolutely hate it. It is a poor design. The materials in the oil catcher do not hold up to the heat. Do not buy this model unless you like an oil mess in the kitchen.

Having the same issue, using it now for the first time. How does a handle give one a headache. The first one we had was as simple as simple can be.
Just got it fantastic cooker I put it in a deep pan in case the oil lets go won't hurt
